[Update: For sale] Samsung Galaxy A8s is official with LCD display hole and no headphone jack

Update 12/21: We now have pricing information about the Samsung Galaxy A8s. The 6GB of RAM variant is on sale from JD.com for CNY2,999 (around $450).

Samsung originally launched the Galaxy A series back in 2015, which includes the A3, A5, A7, and A8. The company has continued releasing successors to some of these devices with each passing year (the A8 got skipped last year) and this year we watched as the company released the Galaxy A, Galaxy A+ and now there’s a new addition to the series: the Samsung Galaxy A8s. This new device is actually the first in the series to include an LCD screen while it also comes with the company’s new Infinity-O camera hole and no headphone port.

We’ve been talking about the Galaxy A8s from Samsung for a couple of months now. This is the first device in the Galaxy A series to add an “s” to the end of its name so some had thought the previous rumors were simply that, rumors. However, it was the end of last year when we got our first glimpse of what the Galaxy A8s could look like thanks to concept renders based on those rumors. While that concept render was close, it wasn’t until the Galaxy A8s passed through China’s TENAA certification process that we got to see real and up close photos of the device.

The TENAA images confirmed the three rear-camera sensors but it wasn’t until we tweaked the image of the front that we were actually able to see the Infinity-O camera hole in the top left corner. Well, the wait is over as Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy A8a in China and the previous rumors were right. However, the Infinity-O camera hole in the official press renders is a lot bigger than what we were able to see with our altered image from TENAA.

If you ignore the Infinity-O display, this is a pretty standard mid-range device. However, there are a couple of other things that stand out. As mentioned, this is Samsung’s first Galaxy A phone with an LCD display. We’re not sure if this is due to the camera hole cutout, but it’s strange to see a Samsung device without AMOLED. The other notable feature is the lack of a feature: no headphone jack. This is always disappointing, but especially on mid-range/affordable devices. Pricing and availability are still unknown.
