During Day 2 of its annual Tech Summit, Qualcomm unveiled the chip that will power the majority of 2021 Android flagships. A successor to the Snapdragon 865, the Snapdragon 888, as expected, brings major improvements in the CPU, GPU, DSP, ISP, modem, and a lot more. It features the new Kryo 680 CPU, Adreno 660 GPU, 6th generation AI Engine with the Hexagon 780 DSP, Spectra 580 ISP, Quick Charge 5, and the Snapdragon X60 modem-RF system.

It seems like we can’t go a day without seeing “artificial intelligence” in the news, and this past week was no exception in no small part thanks to the Snapdragon Tech Summit. Every year, Qualcomm unveils the plethora of improvements it brings to its Hexagon DSP and the Qualcomm AI Engine, a term they use for their entire heterogeneous compute platform - CPU, GPU, and DSP - when talking about AI workloads. A few years ago, Qualcomm’s insistence on moving the conversation away from traditional talking points, such as year-on-year CPU performance improvements, seemed a bit odd. Yet in 2019 and with the Snapdragon 865, we see that heterogeneous computing is indeed at the helm of their mobile computing push, as AI and hardware-accelerated workloads seem to sneak their way into a breadth of use cases and applications, from social media to everyday services.

This new Xiaomi flagship smartphone would have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and a notched LCD. While rumors don't always paint an accurate picture of a device, the Pocophone F1 was leaked in its entirety well before launch. All we had left to learn about the device was its market availability and pricing. Today, Xiaomi has announced the Xiaomi Poco F1 in India (which will be called the Pocophone F1 in other markets).

How a graphics driver bug on the Samsung Galaxy S6 leaked Google Chrome tab data
Ever wonder how security vulnerabilities are found? UK based firm GraphicsFuzz explains how they came across a graphics driver bug on the Samsung Galaxy S6 that they could exploit to see data from opened tabs in Google Chrome.
Back in late March, a U.K. based start-up firm specializing in testing GPU reliability approached us with a GPU bug they discovered that causes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ to reboot when visiting a web page. The firm, called GraphicsFuzz, worked with us to report the issue to Qualcomm and Samsung. Some of our readers were interested in learning just how a company like GraphicsFuzz is able to find these vulnerabilities, so we collaborated with the company to showcase how they discovered an older GPU vulnerability. This already-patched vulnerability allowed an attacker to remotely "spy" on the contents of Google Chrome browser tabs on the Samsung Galaxy S6.

The new Samsung Galaxy S9 includes the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip for several markets, including Hong Kong, the United States, Canada, and parts of Latin America. Samsung has often chosen the latest flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC over their in-house Exynos SoC in some markets. This is usually the case in the United States, with the exception of the Samsung Galaxy S6. To the average consumer, there is little difference between the Exynos 9810 and Snapdragon 845 variants. Under-the-hood, however, the difference in chipsets can lead to wildly different experiences.
Users of Freedreno, the open-source graphics driver support for Adreno on Linux distributions, will be pleased to know that a new update has been released in the past week. Lead developer Rob Clark discussed many of the details in his blog, which highlight above all the support for Adreno 500 series GPUs. Among the highlights include compute shaders for OpenGL and OpenGL ES, improved performance and improved Linux distribution support.
