Best OLED laptops in 2024
OLED panels not only offer better colors, but also deep blacks for the best contrast ratio. Here are some of the best laptops with OLED displays.
When you think about the best phones you can buy today, the most expensive, flagship devices often have OLED displays. This type of panel allows displays to be more vibrant and more colorful, but they can also deliver true blacks and potentially save power. It's taken some time for OLED displays to become more common on laptops, but today, many of the best laptops offer that option. OLED is still mostly a premium feature, so most of the laptops available come with a fairly high price tag, but that also means they're great in just about every way. Here are some of our favorites.

TCL shows off two concept phones with rollable and tri-foldable displays
TCL is showing off two concept smartphones: one with a flexible rollable display, and one with a tri-fold display. Check them out!
Smartphones started off as small-screen devices that could easily fit into our palm, and gradually gained bigger displays till the point they could not fit into our pockets. To shrink them back down again, the war on bezels eliminated all the holding areas on the front of the device, giving us our current generation of smartphones that have a near bezel-less experience. Foldables are considered to be the next big leap for the plateauing smartphone market, as they converge the ideas of maximizing screen size while balancing the size of the device. We've already seen a few foldable smartphones by now, like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, the Motorola Razr, and the Huawei Mate Xs, and all of them take different approaches in their execution. TCL has a few ideas of its own, so the company is now showing off two concept phones: one with a rollable display and one with a tri-foldable display.
MIUI's Always-On Display update adds new clock designs to the ambient display of Xiaomi and Redmi phones
MIUI gets new backgrounds designs and various customization options in the Ambient display option for always-on displays on Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones.
Affordable is good but we often associate it with cheap and Xiaomi might be aiming to change that perception, especially since its presence is now fanning out into markets which value quality over functionality. The company has been making some significant changes to its portfolio by bringing more premium products like the Redmi K20 (known as Mi 9T in Europe) with an AMOLED display as well as introducing the mid-ranger Xiaomi CC9 duo with AMOLED displays – even though that comes with a lower resolution on the e-conomical variant out of the two. One of the benefits of AMOLED displays is the allowance for an Ambient/Always-on Display and MIUI already has some cool AOD screens that you can show off.
No, "AMOLED Black" Does NOT Save More Battery Than Dark Gray
Does using dark gray in a Dark Mode design save as much battery as pure "AMOLED black" in OLED displays? The results may surprise you.
Dark Mode design has attracted a lot of attention lately, and both Google and Apple are rushing out dark-themed designs in their apps as fast as they can in preparation for their next major OS releases, both of which boast Dark Mode as a key feature. In the computer world, people have been asking the age-old question: Should dark mode theme designs use pure "AMOLED black" or dark gray?
Artwalls is a collection of artistic and minimal wallpapers for OLED smartphones
Artwalls is an Android app available offering minimalistic wallpapers inspired by artworks from great artists. The colors look great on AMOLED screens.
The release of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and its "hole punch" screen design has led to many creative wallpapers. These wallpapers integrate the hole punch in some artistic way, making for a cool effect. But cool tricks do not necessarily make for great wallpapers. Sometimes, it's the basics that can look the best.
OnePlus will add DC dimming as an optional feature in a future update
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau mentioned on Weibo that OnePlus will be bringing over DC dimming as an optional feature in a future update. Read on to know more!
OLED panels have been gaining popularity over the years, especially in the flagship segment, as well as a slow trickle down to the mid range segment as well. For all of its pros, OLED panels also have a few cons. One such negative is how the panels handle low brightness. Some users may have noticed how OLED panels begin to flicker when used in the lower brightness ranges. This is because these OLED panels utilize a technique called Pulse Width Modulation to control backlight brightness. PWM resorts to cycling the backlight on and off in rapid succession to control brightness, and the variation in this cycling is how brightness is controlled. We recommend reading this article from OLED-Info.com to know more about PWM, but this handy diagram encapsulates what PWM is, and how it relates to screen flickering at lower brightness levels:
Samsung Galaxy S10 (Exynos) Display Review: Samsung Finally Embraces Color Accuracy, Becomes the Ambassador that Android Needs
The Samsung Galaxy S10 is the latest endeavor to reel in future tech to today's handsets, but has its underlying display characteristics actually improved?
Everyone says it: “Samsung makes the best displays for smartphones.” It’s widely regarded as truth and not many try to dispute it. Even fewer try to (or even know how to) individually assess the display. The problem with this is the lack of verification from what is seen on publications (including our own) versus reality and the limited number of valid points of views and shortage of expertise on the matter. What many don’t know is that previous-generation Samsung Galaxy displays did have issues and even lagged behind the competition in certain categories such as color/white point calibration, gamma, and black clipping. They were not perfect displays — they were far from the best in terms of calibration, actually — and most display reviews gave them way more praise than they deserved. Many are also misinformed and claim their displays to be color-accurate when in their default oversaturated profile. However, a new generation of handsets gives emergence to new hope and expectations. The Galaxy S10 is Samsung’s latest endeavor in reeling in future technologies to the handsets of now, but besides its cutting-edge Infinity-O display, has its underlying panel characteristics actually improved, or has it just been facelifted?
Samsung shows off an under-display camera - no notch needed
The notch is a stop-gap solution before OEMs can figure out how to completely remove all bezels and sensors. Samsung Display is working on a solution.
Display notches are undoubtedly the biggest smartphone trend in 2018. While they technically appeared before this year, we've seen an enormous number of devices with the "feature" in this calendar year. The notch is a stop-gap solution before manufacturers can figure out how to completely remove all bezels and sensors. Samsung Display is one company working on a solution.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro announced with a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner
Today, the company made a big announcement by adding a couple of variants to their Mi 8 series. This one is the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro.
Xiaomi is well-known for selling multiple variants of the many different smartphone lineups they have on the market. This can cause some confusion for those new to the enthusiast community as some may not know which variant to buy to get the best community developer support. This allows them to leverage the name of the series while offering something at multiple price points for the consumer. Today, the company made a big announcement by adding a couple of variants to their Mi 8 series. This one is the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro.
Magisk mod adds Gboard themes like the Poco F1, iOS, Razer, Windows, and more
A new Magisk Module can make Gboard look like the keyboards used on the Poco F1, Razer Phone, and more, thanks to some themes.
The renaming of Google Keyboard to Gboard confused a lot of us within the community. We see Google use their name to brand so many different services (Google Search, Google Maps, Google Pay, etc.) that the Google Keyboard name just made sense. The app was renamed to Gboard and released on iOS in May 2016, but the Android release was delayed until December of that same year. The application comes with a predetermined set of themes, which are essentially different color variations, but now a Magisk Module can actually make the keyboard look like the keyboards used on the Poco F1, Razer Phone, and more.

OnePlus 6 Display Analysis: Playing Bi-annual Catch-up
The OnePlus 6 is the latest flagship smartphone from OnePlus. It has a large 6.28" notched AMOLED display from Samsung. We review the OnePlus 6 display and compare it to the last generation OnePlus 5T.
While OnePlus handsets creep up in price year-after-year, we the consumers have rising expectations for “flagship-level” components from the former proudly-self-labeled “flagship killer.” The display is the portal to just about everything we use our phones for, and as such, it deserves to be one of the most criticized components for the price we pay. Although OnePlus hasn’t necessarily disappointed in this department in the past — we gave the OnePlus 5T a rave review, acclaiming the color accuracy of its calibrated color profiles, which we remorsefully had to revoke — every year is new grounds for judgment when they decide to test the limits on their new hardware and pricing. This time around, in 2018, a new trend has set out to “improve” on last year’s initiative to slimming down the display bezels, and that is, of course, the ever-polarizing “notch” as seen on the OnePlus 6.
