ASUS rolls out an AOSP-based Android 10 beta for the ZenFone 5

ASUS has released an open Android 10 beta for the ZenFone 5, allowing the early adopters to test out the in-development software in advance.

In November last year, ASUS began rolling out stable Android 10 to the ZenFone 6 series. The rollout was extended to the ZenFone 5Z a few weeks later. However, at the time, the mid-range ZenFone 5 was missing from the list, drawing speculations from users that there will not be any further Android updates. But thankfully, the phone will not be left on Android Pie forever as ASUS has just released an open Android 10 beta for the ZenFone 5, allowing the early adopters to test out the in-development software ahead of its official release.

The positive effect of Project Treble on the update fragmentation issue in the Android ecosystem can't be denied. Thanks to Google's effort to modularize the OS, mainstream OEMs are not as reluctant to deliver major Android version updates to legacy and/or entry-level smartphones anymore. Two such devices - the Galaxy J6 from Samsung and the Nokia 3.2 from HMD Global - have now started to receive stable Android 10 OTAs in select regions.

Xiaomi is already working on MIUI 12, and very likely on Android 11 too. However, the version number of Xiaomi's MIUI skin doesn't have a 1:1 correspondence with the underlying Android layer. For example, a bunch of phones from the Chinese OEM has recently picked up the Android 10 update under the same MIUI 11 skin they had before. Two more devices are now eligible for the stable Android 10 OTA – the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 8 Lite.

In the middle of 2019, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S6 (our review). With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, a 2K AMOLED display, and up to 8GB of RAM, the Galaxy Tab S6 was, and still is, the most powerful Android tablet from the Korean company. The Galaxy Tab S6 launched with Samsung's One UI software on top of Android 9 Pie, but now, the update to Android 10 is rolling out. The update also brings Samsung's latest One UI 2.1 software with a plethora of new features.

Samsung’s One UI custom Android OS received a major UI overhaul last year with the rebase on top of Android 10. Samsung has also teased further improvements via an incremental update, which will allegedly be called One UI 2.5. However, Samsung has yet to conclude the One UI 2.0 (or 2.1 in some cases) update rollout, thanks to their gigantic product portfolio. After mid-rangers like the Galaxy A9 (2018) received the Android 10 OTA, it's time for two more Galaxy A series phones to follow suit. The One UI 2.0 update is reportedly hitting the Galaxy A10s and the Galaxy A6+ units in some regions.

[Update: Verizon too] Motorola Moto Z4 starts receiving official Android 10 update

The Motorola Moto Z4 was launched in June of 2019 and it came with Android Pie. The company has started rolling out Android 10 for the US retail variant.

Long before the rise of the Android One program, Motorola decided to ship a close-to-stock version of Android under the management of Google. After being acquired by Lenovo, the situation deteriorated over the years. No more blazing fast updates from Motorola anymore, along with the fact that the Moto Z lineup does not carry a true and proper flagship anymore. To rub salt on wounds, the Motorola Moto Z4 will reportedly get only one major Android OS version update.

The initial batch of MIUI 11 update for several Xiaomi and Redmi phones went live during Q4 2019. However, the underlying software was still based on older versions of Android in most of the cases. The company eventually published the kernel sources of the Android 10 update for the Mi Mix 2s, Mi Mix 3, POCO F1, and the Mi 8 series late last year, while the actual builds have been greenlit for broad scale rollout after a few months. Following the footsteps of the POCO F1 and the Mi Mix 3, the Mi 8 series has now received stable MIUI 11 based on Android 10. Mid-rangers from the Mi 9 series, i.e. the Mi 9 SE and the Mi 9 Lite, are also getting the same treatment.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold (review) might not be the perfect folding phone we had all hoped for, and the company has even released an alternate clamshell design with the Galazy Z Flip. Even with the insane pricing, Samsung has allegedly been able to sell a respectable number of Galaxy Fold units. Keeping aside the initial hype, the owners of this bleeding-edge device have been stuck with Android Pie to date, but there is a new ray of hope. Samsung has now started rolling out the long-anticipated Android 10 update with One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy Fold.

The Realme X2 and Realme X2 Pro were launched globally some time ago. The Realme X2 (review) had fiery midrange specs with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, a 64MP quad-camera and up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The X2 Pro (review), on the other hand, served the flagship space by bumping up the specs with a Snapdragon 855+ and up to 12 GB of RAM. Both phones served as Realme's hottest devices for the last quarter of 2019, and now we have some good news for owners of both of these phones: an Android 10 update is coming your way after the conclusion of the opt-in beta.

HMD Global rolls out the Android 10 update to the Nokia 7.2

Nokia is now rolling out an update to Android 10 to the Nokia 7.2, one of their midrange phones from 2019, as previously promised.

HMD Global has had decent success with its Nokia-branded Android smartphones since they started licensing the name back in 2016. The new Nokia's approach to Android smartphones was an interesting one: with a focus on updates and software without unnecessary fluff and gimmicks, their phones were pretty close to what Motorola released in 2013 and 2014 under Google's ownership. One of their most recent smartphones is the Nokia 7.2 (which, as a fun fact, is also one of the very few Nokia phones that shipped with an unlockable bootloader, albeit this was unintentional and patched later on). Users of the Nokia 7.2 might be glad to know that the device is now receiving its dose of Android 10 through an OTA update.

The smartphone wing of LG heavily struggled in 2019 due to lagging sales, and the company might even drop their flagship G-series brand this year. The Korean OEM is also having a hard time to keep their existing phones up-to-date, as only a handful of LG flagships have received the Android 10 update so far. According to LG's official update roadmap, the LG G8X ThinQ is next in line to get the taste of Android 10, while the LG G7 ThinQ, LG G8S ThinQ, and the LG V40 ThinQ will experience the same in Q3 2020. The company has now gone ahead and published kernel sources for Android 10 for the LG V40 ThinQ.

A quad-rear camera setup is not exclusive to the flagship segment anymore, as current-gen affordable mid-rangers like the Realme 6 series and the Redmi Note 9 (Pro) lineup carry it as well. Samsung actually kickstarted the trend of incorporating four individual rear camera sensors with the release of the Galaxy A9 back in 2018. In terms of software, the phone was launched with Samsung Experience 9.0 on top of Android 8.0 Oreo, though an update to Android 9 Pie was released for the device around a year ago. Cut to now, Samsung has started rolling out the Android 10 update to the Galaxy A9 (2018) with One UI 2.0.

Realme devices have been competing for the mid-range crown against Xiaomi for quite a while now, and one area where Realme is trying to catch up with Xiaomi on is the former's developer-friendliness. ColorOS (or, well, Realme UI, which is still based on ColorOS for the most part) is not everyone's cup of tea on either OPPO or Realme phones, and some people might even dislike it more than Xiaomi's MIUI, another heavily-customized OEM skin. For the most part, though, Realme devices have a vast selection of AOSP-based custom ROMs to choose from, made possible by kernel source drops from Realme. The company also likes to promote the development community from its side by sending some devices over to developers.

[Update 2: Sprint 5G Model] OnePlus says the 7 Pro 5G will get Android 10 in Q1 2020

OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10 was released for the non-5G OnePlus 7 Pro over a month ago. They plan to release it for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G EE in Q1 2020.

We've been talking a lot about the OnePlus 7T series lately, which initially launched without a separate 5G model. That was surprising considering OnePlus was one of the first to launch a 5G phone. We now know the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition will be launching with 5G on T-Mobile, but we've also got some good (and bad) news for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G on EE. It's getting Android 10, but OnePlus says it'll happen next year.

Getting your hands on a shiny new ASUS ROG Phone II might be a difficult task at this moment due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but that didn't stop the Taiwanese company from releasing the long-anticipated Android 10 update as well as the corresponding kernel source code for this device. Matter of fact, an official bootloader unlock utility for the ROG Phone II does exist, making this beastly phone a feasible choice for tinkering. ASUS went a step further and sent several units of the ROG Phone II to custom ROM and kernel developers, just like they did with the ZenFone 6, i.e. their current mainstream flagship. One of those recipients, XDA Recognized Developer luca020400, has now released an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 for the device.

Google's Android One ecosystem is still alive thanks to HMD Global, as the Nokia brand has earned a very good reputation among Android purists. Nokia phones receive regular security updates regardless of the price tag, and Android 10 is already available for a bunch of mid-range Nokia phones, such as the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 6.1 Plus, and Nokia 7 Plus. As per the revised update schedule shared by the company earlier this month, HMD Global has now started rolling out the Android 10 update to the entry-level Nokia 2.2.

Samsung kickstarted the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 rollout via an introductory beta program back in October 2019. While several devices from the flagship Galaxy S and Note lineup were part of the initiative, the company did not include Galaxy M series as well as Galaxy A series of smartphones under the beta program. Interestingly, the Indian variant of the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30 directly received the stable version of One UI 2.0 out of the blue in December. Since then, Samsung has extended the stable rollout to a number of mid-ranger devices in the Galaxy M and the Galaxy A lineup. Now, the company is reportedly rolling out the One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy M30s and the Galaxy A50.

On the other hand, a bunch of  'A' series mid-rangers from the company have received the One UI 2.0 update on top of Android 10. The list includes the Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50s, Galaxy A70, Galaxy A70s and the Galaxy A6 (2018) so far, but now we have three new candidates in the roster. The One UI 2.0 update is reportedly hitting the Galaxy A7 (2018), Galaxy A80 and the Galaxy A40 units in selected regions.

The initial MIUI 11 beta update for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 was based on Android Pie, but the phone eventually received a taste of Android 10 via the closed beta channel back in October of last year. The stable version of MIUI 11 for the Mi Mix 3 landed in the beginning of November, but the underlying Android version was still based on Android 9 Pie. Xiaomi dropped a hint about the upcoming OS upgrade when they published the kernel source code of the Android 10 update for the Mi Mix 3, alongside the POCO F1, Mi Mix 2s, and the Mi 8 series in December. The wait is finally over, as Xiaomi has now started rolling out Android 10 for the Mi Mix 3 in the form of MIUI 11.0.3.0 via the stable channel.

ASUS took a major step last year and switched to a much cleaner, almost stock user interface. On certain devices such as the gaming beast ASUS ROG Phone II, the company gave owners the option to choose between a heavily skinned ROG UI and an almost stock ZenUI. While the ROG UI comes with distinctive icons and wallpapers well suited for a gaming-centric phone, ZenUI is for those who'd rather obsess over the phone's performance than its interface. It also allows users to switch between the two themes as per their mood but to enable other customizations, ASUS has been supportive of the independent developer community.
