In December, we saw the company rolling out a beta version of Android 10 to the global variant of the Oppo F11 and OPPO F11 Pro. Now, the company has started recruiting beta testers for more Oppo devices in India including the Find X series and R17 series.

After updating its flagship lineup to the latest Android version, Samsung is now extending the Android 10 rollout to its mid-range smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy A30 in India and Galaxy A50s in Vietnam are now receiving the stable Android 10 update along with One UI 2.0. Both devices were promised to get the One UI 2.0 based update and were part of Samsung’s 2020 update roadmap, and today the company is finally making good on its promise.

Net Speed Indicator
Net Speed Indicator is a free app to show your download/upload speeds in the status bar

Stock Android 10 doesn't let users see their download/upload speeds in the status bar. Net Speed Indicator is a free app that brings this feature.

Stock Android is generally acclaimed by users because of its clean user interface, minimalism, speed and smoothness, and simplicity. Custom user interfaces add many features on top of stock Android, but in the process of doing so, they add clutter and reduce simplicity. Equally, though, it's undeniable that stock Android is generally thought of as a bare-bones variant of the operating system. It lacks many of the features that users of custom user interfaces have come to take for granted, such as dual installation of a single app, one-handed mode, scheduled power on/off, and more. One such feature is network speed indicator. It's a common feature on custom user interfaces such as OxygenOS, MIUI, EMUI, One UI, ColorOS, FunTouch OS, and others. It's been adopted by custom ROMs such as LineageOS since a long time. However, it's still missing in stock Android 10, which means stock users are missing out. While there are many network status indicator apps on the Play Store, some are more feature-rich than others. Enter Net Speed Indicator, a new free app that brings capable functionality.

DarQ enables per-app forced dark mode on Android 10 without root

DarQ is an app that lets users enable a forced dark mode on a per-app basis on Android 10. It now works without root thanks to the use of an ADB script.

Android 10 brought a few useful features that made it an appreciated update over Android 9 Pie. Android 9's iffy 2-button navigation system gave way for fully gestural navigation, which worked much better. Android 10 also brought a system-wide dark mode on apps that support it after Google realized the benefits of dark themes on premium OLED displays. Google's first-party apps on Android were quickly updated to add dark themes. The system-wide dark mode feature was one that users had been requesting for years, and they finally got their wish in Android 10. However, there is still room for improvement. While Google added a developer option to force all apps to turn on dark mode (even those that hadn't been specifically updated with the feature), there is no way in stock Android to enable a forced dark mode on a per-app basis. As expected, the XDA community came to the rescue. XDA Recognized Developer Quinny899 released the DarQ app in June, letting users enable per-app forced dark mode.

Nowadays, Android flagship phones receive two years of software support. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S8 was launched with Android 7.0 Nougat. It received Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9 Pie, but it won't officially receive Android 10. The same is applicable for flagship phones of other device makers. Mid-range phones and budget phones often receive only a single year of software support, or in case of some budget phones, no software support at all. Device makers have no incentive to roll out Android version updates to any device two years after its launch, because a) The phone's BSP (Board Support Package) stops receiving support from the chip maker, and more importantly b) They have to convince consumers to buy their latest flagships. It's certainly not an ideal situation, because competing Apple iPhones receive as much as five years of software support. While official software updates will only go so far, users of older devices still have one option left. It's the custom ROM community.

Google rolled out Android 10 in September last year and since then most manufacturers have released Android 10 based ROMs for their devices. OnePlus and Essential were among the first to roll out Android 10 based ROMs for their devices and they were soon joined by Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and more. Some manufacturers like OPPO have just announced their Android 10-based skins with plans to roll them out to devices in the near future. Chinese OEM ZTE also showcased its MiFavor 10 skin based on Android 10 early last month and the company is now finally rolling it out to the Axon 10 Pro.

Asus is updating its nearly two-year old budget phone to Android 10. The Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, which launched in April 2018, is now receiving an Android 10 Beta in India and France. For a budget phone that's not part of the Android One program, getting two Android platform updates is indeed great news. However, as the device owners would recall, this wasn't totally unexpected at all. At the time of launch, Asus had promised to deliver two major Android updates including Android Q to the ZenFone Max Pro M1. The device received the first promised update in the form of Android 9.0 Pie back in April last year. And keeping its promise, Asus is now rolling out the second and final update to the device.

Android runs on over 2.5 billion devices around the world. Most of those devices are smartphones, but there are also millions of smartwatches, tablets, televisions, and set-top boxes. Android for TVs and STBs, also called Android TV, is much more tightly controlled by Google than Android for smartphones. Manufacturers of TVs and STBs, along with operators, aren't allowed to make many modifications to the core Android TV experience, so what you see with each new release of Android TV is basically what you'll get on any given device. Today, Google announced the Android 10 update for Android TV along with a new testing device for developers - the ADT-3.

Samsung has been busy rolling out Android 10 updates to its flagship devices for the past few months now. The Galaxy 10 series was the first to receive the One UI 2.0 beta based on Android 10 in November last year while the Galaxy S9/ S9+ received their stable Android 10 update just yesterday. As for the Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note 8, however, Samsung doesn’t appear to have any update planned. In fact, none of these devices are on the list of Samsung’s One UI 2.0 update schedule. This should hardly come as a surprise though, given all three devices are well past their standard 2-year software support window and have already received two major Android version updates during their run. So unless Samsung has any surprise planned, we are unlikely to see an official Android 10 update for the Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note 8. But what if we tell you, you can still try out Android 10 on your device?

As 2019 nears its grand finale, Samsung has something special in store for the Galaxy Note 9 owners: the sweet treat of Android 10. Samsung has begun rolling out stable Android 10 update to Galaxy Note 9 users in India, as per multiple user reports on our forums. At the time being, the update is only being made available to those who had participated in the Android 10 beta program that opened last month. The stable update for those on Android Pie will likely follow in the coming days but there’s no word on it just yet.

Stable Android 10 rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+

Samsung has started rolling out Android 10 for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in Germany as well as for Xfinity Mobile users in the US.

In the past, Samsung used to take many months to roll out new Android version updates even to its flagship phones. Since 2018, however, the company has significantly improved its record in this field. Project Treble's contribution has made itself felt. Before, flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 could see five-six months pass before receiving their Android 8.0 Oreo update, for example. This was improved with the Samsung Galaxy S9 series and the Android 9 Pie update. The pace of improvement was kept up in 2019 and Samsung was quicker than ever to first roll out an Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy S10 series. The Galaxy S10 phones were the first to get the stable update, and the same was later rolled out for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 phones. The company hasn't forgotten its older flagships. The Galaxy S9 series received a One UI 2.0 beta at the end of November. Now, Samsung has started rolling out the stable Android 10 update for Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users in Germany as well as for Xfinity Mobile users in the US.

The TCL Plex marks the company's first foray into mobile devices, offering a decent hardware package in the form of a solid mid-range smartphone for a respectable price. The company's prior experience in tech stems primarily from its TVs, though the TCL Plex was a surprisingly well-rounded package that clearly had thought put into it. The company isn't doing terribly on its first-ever major upgrade either, with the Android 10 update beginning to roll out now. There's a bit of a nasty surprise though, as it comes with added bloatware.

LG announces its LG UX 9.0 (Android 10) update schedule

LG Italia has released a roll-out schedule of the Android 10-based LG UX 9.0 update for nine phones. The LG V50 ThinQ will first get the update in February.

By

For a variety of reasons, LG has never been able to compete on an equal turf against its chief domestic rival in the smartphone market: Samsung. In both hardware and software, LG's phones have rarely been able to overshadow Samsung's devices. Over the past few years, LG Electronics has seen its market share decline. Its mobile division has been a loss-making venture, and although the company has had flashes of brilliance in its hardware, it hasn't been able to catch up with either Samsung or China-based rivals. In terms of software, the story isn't much better. LG now has a reputation of being one of the slowest device makers to roll out new Android version updates to its device portfolio. In April 2018, it opened a Global Software Upgrade Center to roll out updates for more devices and in a more timely fashion, but progress on this front has been slow. Now, LG Italia has released the update roll out schedule of Android 10-based LG UX 9.0 for most major LG phones that were launched in the last two years. Since it was released by LG Italia, it should apply to most of Europe.

Open GApps releases flashable Google app packages for Android 10 custom ROMs

Months after the Android 10 source code was uploaded to AOSP, the Open GApps team has finally released official GApps packages for Android 10 ROMs.

By

If you want to use any app that requires Google Play Services on a custom ROM, you'll most likely need to flash a separate Google apps package or GApps after flashing the ROM. This step is something that most custom ROM developers require you to do in order to avoid legal challenges with them building Google apps into their third-party custom ROMs. Following the launch of each major Android update, the Open GApss team rolls out their latest flashable GApps packages for that version of Android. While the team has previously had a flawless track record of promptly releasing GApps packages for the latest Android build, things were a bit different this time around.

Google released Android 10 back in September last year and since then, a number of manufacturers have released Android 10 based software for their devices. These include Essential, OnePlus, Samsung, Nokia, LG, and more. LG first launched an Android 10 preview for the LG G8 ThingQ and V50 ThinQ back in November last year and it rolled out a stable update for the LG G8 in December. The LG V50 ThinQ and G7 One also received the Android 10 update last month, however, there was one crucial feature missing from the changelog.
