The Honor 5X was launched in October of 2015 in China and then made its way to the US and Europe in early 2016. For a price tag of just $199 in early 2016, the Honor 5X was one of the best budget purchases you could make in the USA at the time. XDA's Creative Director, Mario Serrafero, was impressed with the overall package that the device offered, especially keeping in mind that it was not a flagship and that the US market saw very few value options in that price range. Of course, this was three and a half years ago, and the smartphone landscape has drastically changed. The Honor 5X, obviously, no longer receives any official updates, but the device did receive official LineageOS 15.1 based on Android Oreo. Now, the device is receiving its first builds of official LineageOS 16 thanks to the efforts of developers BadDaemon, Dobroslaw Kijowski, and Joel Hans.

Xiaomi recently announced that it will be shutting its Global Beta ROMs for all devices, with effect from July 1, 2019. Public beta ROMs, though are presumed to be Beta in nature, have been stable enough for a lot of users to use it as a daily driver mainly because of the rather frequent nature of updates. This came with the drawback that a lot of these users would not provide feedback to Xiaomi through the relevant channels, defeating some of the purposes of the program and living with a not-so-stable MIUI experience. Now, Xiaomi is looking for a closed group of beta testers who wish to try out the upcoming Android Q update to the Poco F1, as well as Android Pie updates to the Xiaomi Mi 6, Xiaomi Redmi 6 and Xiaomi Redmi 6A.

I am becoming increasingly impressed with how well HMD Global has handled Android's software updates for all of its smartphones. Granted, you don't get all of the bells and whistles from their OEM ROM as say, Samsung's version of Android, but fans of stock Android have found themselves a good home with the current roster of Nokia smartphones. Anyone paying attention to the business side of the Android industry knows what shape LG is in. For those who are unaware, its mobile division has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year. The only reason why LG is able to continue manufacturing smartphones is thanks to the profits from its display (TV) and appliance divisions. This has been happening for years so many have given up on the company and its promises. This includes the false promises they made about swift software updates last year thanks to its Software Upgrade Center. The Verizon LG V40 ThinQ is just now getting the Android Pie update.

LG Electronics' smartphone division has been under suffered major losses consecutively for the past 15 quarters and even its new boss couldn't drag the business out of deficits. This has caused the company to stop selling devices in key markets like China. Perhaps, due to this sluggish performance, LG has been several months late in releasing the latest version of Android available to its smartphones but, it began the month with some positive news for its users and promised Android 9.0 Pie updates to three of its flagship smartphones. The Pie updates for the LG V30/V30S ThinQ, the LG V35 ThinQ, and the LG V40 ThinQ were scheduled to arrive in Q2 and while LG did not share a more specific timeline, one of these devices is already getting the update in Korea.

Realme started off as an Oppo sub-brand, but has since matured enough in the Indian market to find its own space. While there's still ample reliance on Oppo, as is evident from the shared ColorOS custom UX skin, Realme devices have resonated well with users who are looking for a brand with an active community in the early segments of the market, but who do not want to opt for Xiaomi. More choice is always good, and Realme brings real value in this case. As the company had previously promised, Android Pie is now available for the Realme 2 and the Realme C1 in the form of a beta build of ColorOS 6.

Most OEMs go with the strategy of updating their newest smartphones first so that update gave people hope for the LG G7 ThinQ. It's been less than two weeks and we are just now starting to see LG G7 customers receiving their Android 9 update in the United States and across Europe.

If you buy a premium Android device from a reputable brand, you can generally expect to receive at least 2 major OS upgrades. Sometimes, you'll be lucky to even receive one major OS upgrade, but that only happens when things go terribly wrong for the product or brand. The short-lived Razer Forge TV launched and died in 2015 with Android 5.0 Lollipop-based Android TV, while the Razer Phone launched in late 2017 with Android 7.1 Nougat and received an update to Android 8.1 Oreo. Any hope for an update on the Forge TV is long gone, while there's still some hope that the first-generation Razer Phone will get Android Pie. However, thanks to custom ROM developers on our forums, you can now enjoy Android Pie on both devices through unofficial LineageOS 16 builds.

The Motorola Moto Z3 Play was launched in June 2018, sporting a 6", 2160 x 1080, 18:9 AMOLED display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC. What made the Moto Z3 Play special was that Motorola remained committed to the Moto Mods ecosystem, allowing users to enhance the useability of their device if they did not mind spending some more money. However, the choice of SoC at the prices that Motorola wanted really did not find much favor with consumers.

Android has always been criticized for having poor battery life compared to other mobile operating systems, but this was a double-edged sword. Sure, Android used more battery life than others, but it allowed for a lot more unique and diverse applications to be exclusive to the platform. Xiaomi's entry-level devices, the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A, were launched last year with MIUI 9.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and eventually upgraded to MIUI 10 still based on Oreo. While users may have pegged hopes for at least another major update to Android 9.0 Pie, Xiaomi recently ruled that it will be canceling any testing for the update due to an apparent lack of beta testers. This would have come across as some disappointments but against all odds, Android Pie update for the Redmi 6/6A still seems to be in the process.
