[Update: Probably not] Samsung may actually update the Galaxy S7 with One UI based on Android Pie

Samsung may be following in Google's footsteps and giving the Samsung Galaxy S7 an extra year of updates with Android Pie and One UI.

By

The Samsung Galaxy S7 was launched all the way back in February of 2016. While that might not seem like a long time ago, in a phone's life cycle it is. Most Android OEM's promise only two years of software updates and they usually take forever to receive them towards the end of that period. Google recently gave its first Pixel phone an extra year of updates, which also launched in 2016. Samsung may be following in Google's footsteps and giving the Samsung Galaxy S7 an extra year on top of their promised 2 years of updates with Android Pie and One UI.

skip songs using volume buttons on Android
This Android app lets you long press the volume buttons to skip songs while the screen is off - WITHOUT Root!

Most custom ROMs have an option to long press the volume keys when the screen is off to control music. This Android app does it on any Android 8.0+ device!

If you've ever installed a custom ROM before, then there's a good chance you've seen a feature that lets you remap a long press of the volume button to control media playback. With this option enabled, you can long press the volume up button to skip to the next track or long press the volume down button to return to the previous track. The ability to skip songs with volume button presses is so ubiquitous among custom ROMs that we're surprised to see it hasn't made its way into software from major OEMs.

The year 2019 has signified a gigantic shift of direction for Samsung's mobile division. While their 2018 flagships received some criticism for looking eerily similar to their predecessors, Samsung lost the fear to innovate with their 2019 smartphones: the Galaxy S10 line uses Infinity-O punch-hole displays as an alternative to notches and their new Galaxy A smartphones use teardrop notches, with the recently-announced Galaxy A80 going all out into the unique realm with a New Infinity bezel-less display and a motorized swivel pop-up camera. One UI, their latest customization skin based on Android Pie, also represents a wildly different experience from Samsung's previous Samsung Experience skin.

Android Pie was publicly released by Google in August 2018, and several OEMs have since then gone on to update several flagship and mid-range devices in their portfolio to the latest update by Google (with the unfortunate exception of LG). Asus revealed its Android Pie upgrade plan for its ZenFone lineup, including several popular devices within the roadmap but with no dates. The update seemed to be on the horizon after Asus opened up an Android Pie Beta program for the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, but it took longer than expected. Asus ended up issuing an apology to its fans and customers and promised that Android Pie would be made available to the ZenFone Max Pro M1, ZenFone Max Pro M2, and ZenFone Max M2 by April 15th. True to its word, the update for the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Max M2 have begun rolling out to devices.

One UI based on Android Pie for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8 is rolling out on all major US carriers and unlocked models now.

One UI is the newest version of Samsung Experience, the company's own take on the Android mobile operating system. It has a huge amount of changes that focus on creating a great user experience for those using bezel-less devices. All of the non-interactable UI elements like headers and other text are relegated to the top of the display, while functional aspects are lower and easier to reach. This type of layout accommodates one-handed usage so that users don't feel that bigger displays are harder to use. An update to One UI also means an update to Android Pie. We saw the company roll out a beta for unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8 devices in the US, but now it's rolling out for devices on the stable channel too on all major US carriers.

Android Pie was publicly released all the way back in August of 2018 (exactly 242 days ago). Most major Android OEMs have since treated their flagships and mid-range devices with Android Pie, and some have even rolled out the updates to even cheaper devices. LG has been abysmal in this regard as their update plans for Android 9 only featured the LG G7 for Q1 2019. Most LG G7 ThinQ owners are still waiting for the update and only the LG G7 One (Android One) and the LG G8 (launched with Android Pie) are on the latest public version of Android. LG has finally posted their update plans for Q2 2019, and thankfully, some more flagships like the LG V30, LG V35, and the LG V40 have been listed for this period.

One of the beauties about the Android operating system is the open-source nature, meaning that anyone can fork the code, change it, and redistribute it. Some people, like developers on the XDA forums, use it for providing users with the latest and greatest Android experience on officially unsupported devices. Some companies are also releasing different versions of Android for a lot of different devices. CopperheadOS is one of them, and they took a very interesting approach a long time ago. CopperheadOS is focused entirely on providing users with the best security measures possible on the software. Just now, they updated the system to the Android Pie.

Samsung has been more generous with One UI update based on Android 9 Pie compared to previous updates. Aside from last year's flagships such as Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, older devices such as the Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy Note 8, and even the Note FE have received the latest update. 23 more Samsung smartphones will be receiving a taste of Pie later this year but Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will be left out. So if you own either of the two flagships from 2016 and want to experience Samsung's One UI, you wish has been granted - although unofficially. A full port of the Galaxy Note FE's One UI firmware is now available for Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge (Exynos variant only)

LineageOS 16 adds support for the 2013 LG G2

Official LineageOS 16 has now launched for LG's 6 year-old flagship, the LG G2, bringing stable Android Pie to this old device.

By

Say what you want about LG as a smartphone manufacturer right now, but one thing is certain: the LG G2 was one of their greatest devices, if not the greatest. It packed reduced screen bezels and a high screen-to-body ratio (76%, to be exact) way before it was cool, all the way back in 2013. And while the internals have definitely aged, it's still alive and kicking, which is a lot to say for a 6-year-old phone. The developer community around the device is definite proof of that. LineageOS 16, the latest version of LineageOS, is now officially available for all models of this device, meaning that you can now get stable Android Pie up and running on this old jewel, which launched with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

If you belong to the former, you can now use the CustoMIUIzer Xposed Module to further tweak MIUI 10 to better suit your tastes and needs.

Samsung rolls out Android Pie with One UI for the Galaxy Note FE

The Samsung Galaxy Note FE (Fan Edition) is the reincarnation of the Galaxy Note 7, a device that was "permanently discontinued" because of the phone's tendency to catch fire. Samsung equipped the Galaxy Note FE with a smaller battery, and over the years, we haven't heard of any more serious issues with the device -- safe to say that the Note FE is safe.

Huawei's sub-brand Honor may have been a latecomer in terms of Android updates until a year ago but it is slowly ramping up its speed with Android 9 Pie. Honor has been working on EMUI 9 updates based on Android 9 Pie for a number of devices and this is not limited to latest flagship, Honor View 20. Aside from the View 20, late 2017's flagship Honor View 10, last year's performer Honor Play, and budget-oriented Honor 8X have already received the stable Android 9 Pie update while Honor 8 Pro and Honor 7X are currently under the beta program. Now, the EMUI 9 beta is coming to two more devices - namely Honor 9N and Honor 9 Lite.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro and its successor, the Redmi Note 6 Pro (launched in September 2018), helped Xiaomi cement its position as a leader in the Indian market, contributing heavily to the 11.7 Million smartphones that Xiaomi shipped in Q3 2018 alone in India.

LG posts kernel sources for the G8 ThinQ and V40 ThinQ's Android Pie update

LG has posted kernel sources for the LG G8 ThinQ as well as for the LG V40 ThinQ's upcoming Android Pie update. Read on to know more!

LG's current software update situation can be best described with one word: messy. LG's update roadmap for Android Pie only included the LG G7 ThinQ for Q1 2019, glossing over the LG V40 ThinQ which was released at a later date and relegating it to Q2 2019. Android Pie on LG first arrived on the LG G7 One, which wasn't too surprising since the device is part of the Android One program. Then, in January 2019, the Android Pie update for the LG G7 began rolling out in Korea. The LG G8 ThinQ was launched with Android Pie, so that makes it a total of three devices which have officially received Android Pie from LG. While the LG V40 still awaits its update (we were unable to locate the update at the time of writing), LG has gone ahead and posted kernel sources for Android Pie for the LG V40 as well as for the LG G8.

If you are interested in modding your device, whether it's in the short or long term, Xiaomi devices are great choices. The cheap prices of their smartphones coupled with custom development-friendliness helps a lot. One of the best ROMs available for these phones (and pretty much any phone, while we're at it) is LineageOS. Everyone's taste in ROMs is different, but LineageOS strikes a nice balance between pure stock Android and other feature-rich distributions. It adds a lot of features, but keeps all the unnecessary/gimmicky stuff out of the door. The Lineage team recently launched LineageOS 16, the latest iteration of their custom software, which is based on the Android Pie release.
