One of the reasons new iPhone users choose to buy an Apple Watch over any other option is its advanced health and fitness tracking features. After all, this excellent smartwatch has literally saved lives, and it continues to push its wearers to be more active. Some of us at XDA have been taking advantage of this wearable by also relying on Apple's Fitness+ subscription service. As someone who used to exercise minimally beyond jogging and swimming, Fitness+ has actually helped me lead a healthier lifestyle.

What I like about Apple Fitness and what could be better

Since getting an Apple Watch, I have made good use of the Fitness app, including the free trial for Apple Fitness+. But I continued to use it even after my trial expired because the workouts are a nice way to switch up my regular exercise routine. Even without Apple Fitness+ or an Apple Watch, the Apple Fitness app is a great way to keep on top of your movement and activity. Add in the Apple Watch, and you can also monitor your stand and exercise minutes, heart rate during workouts, earned awards, and more.

Once you have one of the best Apple Watches, there are a few first things you should do with it. This includes setting it up and syncing it with your iPhone, of course, adding all your favorite apps, personalizing the screen, and more. You’ll also want to set your personal fitness goals, add friends with whom you can share stats, and get prepped to leverage everything the smartwatch has to offer.

One of the new features coming with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is the ability to create custom Apple Fitness+ workout plans. Custom workouts have been available in the Workout app since watchOS 9, but these new features combine the best of Apple Fitness+ with the new OS updates to take it to new levels. You can now schedule monthly or even weekly fitness routines, select the days of the week you plan to exercise, the duration for each workout, what activity type, the instructor, what music you want, and so much more.

Apple's annual WWDC keynote this year was packed with a ton of exciting announcements, and it's safe to say that it did not disappoint. In addition to the new Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, Apple also previewed the new version of iOS, which, as is usually the case, sparked the not-so-friendly iOS vs. Android debate. Anybody who follows the post-keynote conversation on social media after an Apple, Samsung, or Google event knows what I'm talking about, right? Everybody has an opinion on which OS is falling behind the other.

During its Apple event in September, the company announced that an Apple Watch would no longer be required for its Fitness Plus service. Today, the company has made things more official, announcing the service will become available in 21 countries starting on October 24.

Apple released iOS 16 to the public earlier this month. Since then, the company has been working on the upcoming minor release. That's to smoothen out glitches and make tweaks based on mass user feedback. Yesterday, the Cupertino firm seeded iOS 16.1 beta 2 to registered developers. While beta 1 included more exciting changes, beta 2 certainly includes a welcome addition. Users on the latest beta build can subscribe to and use Apple Fitness Plus without needing a Watch. This makes the paid service accessible to more users -- particularly ones not interested in an Apple Watch.

Apple Fitness Plus was released at the very end of 2020, and it’s a guided fitness solution powered by the Apple Watch. It's a subscription service that can be shared with your iCloud family, and it comes with over 11 workout types. Apple adds over 25 new workouts every week, and their durations can be pretty much any length of time between five and 45 minutes. Apple has now announced a notable update for the service, introducing both Collections and a "Time to Run" feature, rolling out January 10th.

There are a lot of reasons to get a smartwatch. You might just want a timepiece that can show you notifications as they come in. Some smartwatches aim to be health monitors, such as how the Apple Watch can monitor not just your heart rate, but can detect falls or even do an ECG. You'll probably also want your new smartwatch to be a decent fitness tracker, and that's simply an area where the Apple Watch Series 7 excels. Our review for the Apple Watch Series 7 talked about why it is a great smartwatch, and now I want to focus a bit more on the holistic fitness experience.
