The ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro, ASUS’ mainstream flagships from 2020, were also in line to receive the same treatment. True to its word, the company has now initialized the stable Android 12 update rollout to the ZenFone 7 series owners around the world.

ASUS earlier this month refreshed its flagship lineup with the launch of the ZenFone 8 series. The ZenFone 8 and Zenone 8 Flip offer top-tier specs while still costing considerably less than many of its Snapdragon 888-powered counterparts. However, if you own a ZenFone 7 or ZenFone 7 Pro from last year, you’ll find little reason to upgrade as, besides a marginally faster chipset and other incremental upgrades, there’s not a whole lot to get excited about. Besides, if you ever get bored of ASUS’ software, you can always take refuge in the world of custom ROMs and kernels. The ASUS ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro don’t have a long list of custom ROMs to try out, but they have an official build of OmniROM and official TWRP support. Now the device has received its first custom kernel.

The ASUS ZenFone 7 lineup has been on the market for about half a year now. The device sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC (Snapdragon 865 Plus on the Pro variant), 6/8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 128/256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage alongside a dedicated microSD card slot. All of that comes in a slim package with 6.67-inch AMOLED display that refreshes up to 90Hz, stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 5,000mAh battery, and the signature Flip Camera module. To put it in short, it’s a solid flagship device, none less than any other flagship from 2020. The ZenFone 7 was originally released with Android 10 with ZenUI 7 on board, but ASUS was quick enough to start recruiting beta testers for its Android 11 update. The beta testing phase is finally over, as the company is now rolling out the first stable build of Android 11 to ZenFone 7 users.

The TWRP custom recovery is an essential tool for Android enthusiasts who wish to install third-party software on their devices. With it, you can flash new custom ROMs, take full data backups, modify protected files, and do much more. But to do any of these things, you need to have a device that's officially supported by the TWRP project. Thankfully, the team behind the project keeps adding support for new devices ever so often. Since our previous coverage, the team has expanded support to the ASUS ZenFone 7 series, ROG Phone 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series (Exynos), Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, Galaxy J4, and the Galaxy M30s.

ASUS launched their ZenFone 7 lineup back in August this year and the device duo have been quite well received. In a bid to make the phones more attractive to the aftermarket development community, the company promptly published the bootloader unlock tool and the kernel source code. Thanks to the OEM's proactive support, we even saw the release of a public beta of Android 11 for the device. Third-party development for the ZenFone 7 series has been on high-gear ever since and we now have the first custom ROM, an unofficial TWRP port, and working Google Camera ports for it.

Last week, ASUS started rolling out a closed beta build of Android 11 to the ZenFone 6, making it the first ASUS smartphone to get a taste of Android 11. The choice of the device, however, is a bit awkward due to the fact that the ZenFone 7 lineup is the latest mainstream flagship offering from the Taiwanese OEM. No need to worry, though, as ASUS has now announced a public beta testing program for the Android 11 update on the ZenFone 7 series and is seeking early testers for the update.

Transitioning from the legacy circuit-switched voice network to IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) gives us the opportunity to use advanced cellular services such as Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi), and Rich Communication Services (RCS). Now that 5G support is ready to land on the budget segment, several carriers are gradually phasing out old school 2G/3G infrastructures and even require VoLTE for all devices connecting to their 4G LTE and 5G networks. T-Mobile and AT&T, for example, are going to block voice and data service for phones that don’t support VoLTE in the near future.

The distinction between smartphones and gaming consoles is getting blurred for consumers in certain Asian markets thanks to the rise of the gaming phone. Mobile eSports titles are now bigger than ever, thus it's not uncommon to see users spend hundreds of hours playing multiplayer games on their phone rather than PC or console. Such long gaming sessions are obviously demanding for the battery, so users end up repeatedly charging their phones to keep playing. Your phone’s long-term battery capacity takes a hit if you constantly charge it to full. To address this issue, the recently launched ASUS ROG Phone 3 and the ASUS ZenFone 7 series come with a charging limit feature that enables passthrough charging once the battery level reaches a certain limit.

The ASUS ZenFone series has been a solid contender in the affordable flagship space for a few generations, but ASUS devices have generally flown under the radar for various reasons. The ASUS ZenFone 6, or ASUS 6Z as it is called in India, was a prime example of an underrated smartphone, giving us some of the best smartphone hardware and software without breaking the bank. It also had the distinction of being one of the few smartphones without a notch or hole-punch cutout, thanks to its Flip Camera module. The successor to the ZenFone 6 is now here in the ZenFone 7, though this time around, there are two devices to talk about. Meet the new ASUS ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro.

ASUS recently took the wraps off its latest flagship smartphones: the ASUS ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro (review). Both phones pack top-of-the-line hardware, including a 6.67-inch notchless, hole-punch-less AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, the Snapdragon 865 SoC, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, a 64MP IMX686 primary camera in a motorized Flip Camera module, and a 5,000 mAh battery. The devices recently went up on sale in ASUS's home country of Taiwan and have now launched in Europe, and a new software update is already being pushed to greet new buyers. The update takes care of early bugs and improves camera performance.

The newly launched ASUS ZenFone 7 series retains the iconic "Flip Camera" design from its predecessor, but it does pack in a number of necessary upgrades as well. Apart from the anticipated jump to Qualcomm's latest flagship tier Snapdragon 865 (on the non-Pro variant) and Snapdragon 865 Plus (on the Pro variant), the transition from LCD to AMOLED display is perhaps the most significant improvement in this generation. On the software side, the ASUS ZenFone 7 lineup offers a near-stock interface with several added functionalities in the form of ZenUI 7. The Taiwanese OEM is known for encouraging the aftermarket development community to utilize the excellent hardware with the help of custom ROMs or other mod, and the new ZenFone models have just become a part of that venture. The company has now released the kernel source code as well as a dedicated tool for bootloader unlocking for the phone duo.

Smartphone design has come a long way since Apple unveiled its first iPhone in 2007. Android phones used to have thick bezels and tiny displays; now they're so massive they blur the line between tablet and phone. Each year, new advancements in smartphone design and display technology give OEMs the ability to trim down bezels even more. Until the mass production of under-display camera tech next year, though, most OEMs won't offer truly full-screen smartphones, instead opting to cut a hole or notch in the display to leave room for the front-facing camera(s). A stop-gap solution to this problem has already been in use since last year, though—hiding the camera in the top (pop-up camera) or flipping it around from the back (flip camera). The new ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro is one such device that employs a "Flip Camera" module to offer a full-screen display experience, and it definitely stands out in a year dominated by phones with notches or hole-punches.

ASUS has just launched the ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro, two phones that continue the motorized flip camera legacy for another year. While the pricing on the devices has increased compared to their predecessor, there are a fair few improvements onboard that justify the rise. But one of the biggest improvements with the devices doesn't actually have to do with the devices themselves, but rather, their supply. With the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro, ASUS is promising greater availability compared to last year's model.
