In February this year, Tasker received a significant update on the beta channel (v5.12.3) that added sleep tracking automation to the app. The feature used Google's Sleep API to centralize sleep detection processing in a battery-efficient manner and helped users easily track their sleeping state using the app. The feature is now rolling out on the stable channel, and you can try it out right away.

A new Android version is released every year, and Google takes the stage at I/O to highlight some of the most prominent changes to the OS. But there are always many features that are not covered on stage due to paucity of time, and these end up being discovered later on. "Rules" is one such feature of Android 10 that was not highlighted by Google either at Android Q's keynote event at Google I/O 2019, nor at the Google Pixel 4 launch. Rules was first spotted as Settings Routine, allowing users to automate a few common actions on the device based on certain conditions. Curiously. the feature was missing from the surface in the stable Android 10 release, nor was it available on the Pixel 4. The feature then suddenly showed up for some Pixel owners, but there was no way to enable it across the board. Now, if you are willing to root your device, you can enable Rules on any Pixel device with the latest Android 10 release.

Detact is a new Tasker plugin that you can use to automate your daily routine. It can detect a number of different movements that you can use to integrate into your life. The plugin can pick up on when you're driving, cycling, or running, and you can automate tasks accordingly. Even better, it makes use of the Activity Recognition Transition API so that it uses as little battery as possible. The developer also says that it may work with other applications that use the Locale API, such as Locale, Llama, Automate, Automagic, and others. These have not been tested extensively, however.

After acquiring the popular automation application called Tasker, developer João Dias has been hard at work on improving the application. His first beta release added the secure setting permission so users could automate any setting on their device. His first public release expanded on that by making it into an Action in the app, and he also modernized the app by adding runtime permissions and support for Magisk root. Now, the latest beta version of the app adds two new exciting features: The ability to export Tasks/Profiles/Projects to URLs for easy sharing and a new Event and State context that monitors settings for changes.

It's no secret that we at XDA are big fans of Tasker. We've covered the application and its capabilities multiple times in the past and have demonstrated that the potential uses of Tasker are limitless thanks to its extensive plug-in framework. Tasker has become so robust over the years that development on the application has slowed down significantly in the past year or so. That doesn't mean that development on Tasker is unnecessary or dead, as new versions of Android introduce new features that are ripe for automation.
