Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra colorways with TWRP logo

TeamWin Recovery Project, or TWRP for short, is by far the most popular custom recovery solution in the Android modding scene. Although the tinkering fanbase has significantly dwindled over the years, but there are still people out there dedicated to the craft, which means a recent flagship receiving a port of TWRP is quite a big deal. This is exactly what happens with the Galaxy S23 series, as XDA Senior Member afaneh92 has managed to come up with an almost functional build of TWRP for Samsung's latest offering.

It was necessary for the development community here on the XDA forums to get working on these devices right away. Now, an unofficial port of the Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) has been released for the Galaxy S22 series by XDA Member killprocess. TWRP is a crucial element in getting custom ROM development off the ground.

Motorola Moto G8 Power leak

Back in February, Motorola refreshed its Moto G lineup by launching a pair of Qualcomm Snapdragon 665-powered smartphones. The Lenovo-owned brand dropped the numeric identifier from the names of these two phones in some regions, e.g. the "Moto G8 Power" launched as the "Moto G Power" in the U.S. To make things further complicated, Motorola maintains two different sets of firmware packages for the Moto G Power (code-name "sofia") and the Moto G8 Power (code-name "sofiar"). The whole situation is certainly a bit chaotic for aftermarket development on these phones, but XDA's brilliant developer community has managed to kickstart the journey anyway. Here is our first custom development roundup for the Moto G(8)Power.

The POCO M2 Pro (our review) may not feature a flagship chipset like the first-gen POCO F1 or even a high refresh rate display panel like the POCO X2, but the smartphone does offer some solid specifications for a very competitive price. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC is specifically tuned for mobile gaming on a budget, while the massive 5,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charging support is capable enough to deliver a marathon battery life. Since the first POCO-branded device was quite a big hit among aftermarket development enthusiasts and custom ROM developers, we expect that this mid-ranger will continue that legacy. In fact, development on our forums has been in high gear right from the beginning, and here’s our first custom development roundup for the POCO M2 Pro.

The "recovery" environment on Android-powered devices is a lightweight runtime mode that is usually separate from the actual Android user interface. On most occasions, the recovery is powered by a standalone kernel which means the device can boot to the recovery mode even if the main Android OS is unbootable. Such a design makes the recovery environment particularly useful for installing OTA updates and executing maintenance jobs (e.g. cleaning cache or erasing user data).

Dessert name or not, Android 10 is the flavor of the season. Several flagships from prominent OEMs have received their official updates, while several others have received a taste of the new OS version thanks to Android 10 custom ROMs. Google is also very happy with Android 10's adoption rate, made possible because of Project Treble and the whole host of other changes made over the years. Unfortunately, while Android 10 brings with itself its own joys, it also makes a few things difficult for custom recoveries like TWRP. TWRP lead developer and XDA Senior Recognized Developer Dees_Troy has highlighted some of the issues that the recovery faces on its way to officially support Android 10.

Pixel devices are known to be one of the most developer-friendly smartphones on the market now. They come with the "stock" Android experience, the bootloader is easily unlockable (at least on the international version), and flashing anything via fastboot is no hassle. That helps the always growing developer community evolve even more. XDA Forums are full of custom ROMs, kernels, and custom recoveries like TWRP. But these mods need to be installed on the device via custom recovery. The latest representatives of the series, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, were released barely a month ago. Both of the devices feature Snapdragon 845, 4GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, wireless charging, IP68 water and dust resistance and other features.

Many of us in the XDA community use the most popular custom recovery, TWRP. It's mainly used for flashing, but some people also use it for backing up data. Sure, you can back up your app data, boot, system, etc. But, it has one problem: you can't back up your entire internal storage (/data/media) by default. So, users of TWRP have used other methods for backing up their photos, videos, and more. These methods were most probably adb or MTP.

One of the biggest draws to the XDA forums are the abundance of custom ROMs, kernels, and modifications available for it. With the release of Android Pie, developers are working hard to port the latest Android release from AOSP to their devices. Two major roadblocks must be overcome before custom development can really take off on our forums: bootloader unlocking and then porting a custom recovery. Without the former, there's no point even considering modding your device which is why the community is upset with Huawei's recent decision. Without the latter, it's too risky for most users to mod their devices because you could end up making your device inoperable if you don't have access to stock images. Custom recoveries, especially Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP), are crucial to custom development, which is why official TWRP support coming to the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 and HTC U12+ are a big deal in each respective community.

The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) is one of Samsung's more budget-oriented smartphones.
