When developers want to test their apps and make sure they work, it's important to test them on groups of people and to ensure that all of the feedback and testing data they get is of a high standard. Google’s Firebase is a pretty comprehensive set of development tools that can help do exactly that, but also so much more. Its goal is to make app development and maintenance easier, with features like detailed crash reporting, user analytics, authentication, and storage. That's why Google is now graduating Firebase App Distribution into stability at this year's Google I/O, pulling it out of the beta that it's been in since the end of 2019.

Google's biggest developer conference of the year is Google I/O, where the company unveils a plethora of new services and upgrades to existing ones. Given the sheer size of Google as a company and the limited amount of time available, it's impossible for some of the larger teams within the company to unveil everything they've been working on. That's why some teams within Google hold dedicated events to bring developers up to speed on the latest features and tools they need to be aware of. Today, Google unveiled the dates for three such developer events: the Android Dev Summit, the Chrome Dev Summit, and the Firebase Summit.

Google is a pretty ubiquitous name in the Android space. Not only does the company own and maintain the Android Open Source Project itself, but it's also in charge of the largest distribution platform on Android: the Google Play Store and the underlying Google Mobile Services (GMS) suite. GMS is the important part here. Firebase, Google's cross-platform toolkit for things like analytics and crash detection, uses GMS to provide a lot of its functionality.

Firebase is a toolset provided by Google, functioning as a unified backend-as-a-service (BaaS) platform for mobile developers. In a nutshell, Firebase provides a fair few tools for in-code utilities like analytics, authentication, databases, configuration, push messaging, file storage, and more. The overall platform helps developers accomplish a lot of common tasks within their apps without needing to individually build their own solutions for these tasks. For instance, the Firebase Auth SDK makes it easy for developers to add a complete sign-in system with an accompanying UI to their apps. Recently, Firebase has added new tools and features, such as a new emulator UI, Stripe payment processing extension, an enhanced TensorFlow lite deployment, and more.

Google uses artificial intelligence extensively to serve highly contextual and accurate web and image search results. Besides Search on the web platform, Google's machine learning models also provide for a variety of AI applications on Android phones ranging from the visual search on Google Lens to computational photography that Pixel devices are famous for. Apart from its own applications, Google also allows third-party developers to integrate machine learning features into their apps seamlessly with the help of ML Kit, an SDK (Software Development Kit) which is part of Firebase – its online management and analytics dashboard for mobile development. As of today, Google is announcing a major change to ML Kit and will make on-device APIs independent of Firebase.

Whenever I sign-up for a new online service or an app asks me to sign-in to store some data in the cloud, I generally try to use one of the "sign in with" options, which usually includes Google, Facebook, Twitter, or Microsoft, if they are supposed. Most people already have one or more accounts with these large providers, so it's convenient, both for the user and for the developer, to support logins this way. For app developers, unless you really want to (or have to) implement your own user authentication system, then you're better off using an off-the-shelf auth system like Firebase Authentication.

If you're an Android app developer, then you've probably looked into or are already using Firebase, Google's mobile development suite. Unless you plan on distributing your app outside of Google Play, then there's no downside in implementing one or more of the tools offered by Firebase (that depends, of course, on how much you can afford.) Through Firebase, you can implement Google Analytics for insights into app usage and user engagement, perform A/B testing with Remote Config, improve user retention through targeted messages with Cloud Messaging, track crashes through Crashlytics, host websites with Hosting, and much more. With over 2 million monthly active apps using Firebase, Google wants to make the platform even more useful for Android app developers, so they're continuing to expand Firebase's feature set.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence have quickly entered our lexicon in recent years, but few truly understand how the technology works, or what they're capable of. Even Google's own AI researchers joke that machine learning is akin to alchemy. As a busy developer, you may not have the time to learn about machine learning (ML), but Google doesn't want that to stop you from reaping its benefits. For that reason, the company today announced ML Kit: A new SDK that incorporates years of Google's work on machine learning into a Firebase package that mobile app developers on both iOS and Android can use to enhance their apps.

The fundamental building blocks of Android app development can be whittled down to an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and a device or emulator to run it on, and while these are enough to build an app, a host of other tools augment the developer experience, aiding the team behind the product to scale the product, improve the user experience, increase engagement and retention, and earn more.
