Framework Laptop (2023) vs MacBook Air (M2): The most modular or the most powerful?

We compare one of the most repairable laptops against one of the most powerful you can buy.

Looking for a great new 13-inch laptop to use every day? There are two laptops we suggest. If you're invested in the Apple ecosystem of devices like iPhones and iPads, then the MacBook Air M2 will be for you, as it's up there as one of the best Macs you can buy today. But if you're the most technical type that likes tinkering with your device by upgrading it, you'll love the Framework Laptop.

Does the Framework Laptop have Thunderbolt 4?

Whether your Framework Laptop has Thunderbolt 4 will depend on if you get the Intel CPU or AMD CPU option.

If you're looking for a great upgradable laptop, the Framework Laptop 13 really excels. You can not only tear the laptop down following easy-to-understand online guides and upgrade components like the main board, but you also can customize the ports as you see fit. Thanks to the Expansion Cards you can add as many as four ports to your laptop, like HDMI, Ethernet, extra storage, DisplayPort, and even USB-A.

Is the Framework Laptop good for gaming? Does it have a GPU?

The Framework Laptop 13 isn't designed for gaming, but AMD models are capable of it. A dedicated Framework Laptop 16 for gaming is coming soon.

One thing that the Framework Laptop does better than some of the other best laptops is the way that you can upgrade it. Sure, there are a lot of great upgradeable laptops, but Framework does it best since you can upgrade the main board, strip the laptop down to its bare parts, and swap out components following online guides very easily. Gaming on the Framework Laptop 13, though, is a complicated situation. None of the current Framework Laptop models are good for gaming, as they don't have a GPU. The future Framework Laptop 16 will have that option, but its release date is quite a while away.

One of the reasons the Framework Laptop is considered by many as the best laptops you can buy has a lot to do with reparability. Unlike the other best 13-inch laptops out there, you can tear it down right to the mainboard and upgrade it on your own by buying parts through the Framework marketplace. It's up there as one of the best upgradeable laptops.

Framework is a unique brand in the laptop space. When you order from Framework, you're getting a fully repairable and modular device. It makes some of our favorite laptops and even Chromebooks because of how we can tailor them to our liking, allowing you to swap out components like the CPU, storage, and more as you see fit. Based on feedback from the community, Framework recently rebranded the classic Framework Laptop to the Framework Laptop 13. Though the product name has changed (because a bigger 16-inch model is coming soon, although we won't be talking about it here since we don't have many details yet), the ideals are the same.

5 things I want to see in the next Framework Laptop

The Framework Laptop got the long-requested AMD CPU option, and there's even a 16-inch model on the way, but there's more that could elevate it.

I review tons of great laptops and Chromebooks for a living, but my favorite will always be the Framework Laptop. I'm a tinkerer, and I love customizing my devices and repairing them on my own when something goes wrong. That's the audience and the community the company has catered to since the launch of the Framework Laptop.

We're almost coming up to a year since Valve launched the Steam Deck, and while it was a long process, we're now at the point where it can easily be purchased without a reservation. So while some folks might just be starting their journey with the handheld console, others who have had more time with it, might have already started down another path, exploring different mods and accessories.

Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition review: The modular Chromebook dream comes to life

The ability to upgrade or tinker with a Chromebook felt like a pipe dream, but it's now a reality thanks to the Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition.

Some of the best Chromebooks and Windows laptops are powerful but not exactly the most repairable. You might be able to swap out RAM or storage, but parts like the battery and ports are often glued or soldered to the motherboard or chassis. Even the motherboard itself might not be upgradeable. This means if something seriously goes wrong with your Chromebook or you want to upgrade it yourself, it might end up as electronic waste or in the recycling bin.

Thanks to a new partnership with Google, Framework is announcing the Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition. Similar to the concepts behind the regular Windows or operating system-free-based counterpart, this promises to be one of the most sustainable,  upgradeable, and modular ChromeOS devices yet. With the news, Framework also becomes the newest Chromebook OEM, just like bigger giants such as HP, and Lenovo.
