Google Prompt 2-step verification will soon be enabled on any phone you're signed in to
Google Prompt pops up a "Is this you?" message on your phone when you sign in from another device. Soon it will be available on any phone.
An important part of staying secure online is the use of 2-step verification. Many services offer 2-step verification and you should use it wherever applicable. One of the things that prevents people from enabling 2-step is the slight inconvenience, but Google makes it easy with "Google Prompt." This is the feature that will pop up a "Is this you?" message on your phone when you sign in from another device. Soon it will be available on any phone.
Google Prompt is Now the Primary Choice for 2-Step Authentication
Google has now made Google Prompt the primary choice for new users of 2-factor authentication instead of SMS-based verification.
Two-step authentication for Google accounts has been a feature for quite a few years now. Traditionally, this has used SMS-based verification to authenticate your sign-in attempt. This has worked well and provided a layer of security above and beyond that of a password, but it has always been a bit cumbersome to use, as it involves typing a six-digit code received via SMS. To rectify this inconvenience, Google began inviting users in July to use Google prompt as their 2-Step verification method, instead of SMS.
Earlier this year in February, Google completely overhauled its 2-Step Verification process (2-SV) so that you could more easily and securely sign into your Google account on any device. This update brought along an improved user-interface, the option to use Google's 2-SV over an encrypted connection, and a feature called, "Google Prompt" that allows users to see in real-time who's trying to log into their account and whether they want to confirm or deny access.
