We live on an increasingly-diverse planet. Thanks to the internet, planes and other modern forms of transportation, and globalization, people from completely different backgrounds often find themselves interacting with each other -- online or otherwise. The English language acts as a lingua franca in many cases, as it's widely taught and spoken around the globe. However, we sometimes still need to translate text from one language to another. One of Google Translate's flaws was not necessarily providing correctly-gendered translations. The algorithm would assume whether a certain word is masculine or feminine based on the context. Back in 2018, the company announced that it's launching gender-specific translations on the Google Translate web app. The feature has now finally made it to the iOS app -- three years later.

Although the app has continued to gain new tricks such as letting you transcribe real-time speech, it hasn’t seen a major UI refresh in a long while. But that might be changing soon as Google appears to be working on a big redesign for the Android app.

Google finally delivered with the first stable rollout of Android 10 late last year, pushing a new darker theme for the operating system. The company also rolled out individual dark mode toggles for many of its apps, including Google Keep, Files, Photos, Duo and more. However, the dark mode hasn't made it to all of Google's Android apps yet. For instance, the Google Translate app still doesn't have a dark theme. But the latest update for the app reveals that the company has finally started testing dark mode support for the app.

Earlier this year in March, Google finally rolled out real-time translation in Google Translate which allows users to record speech in one language and have them translated on your phone in near real-time. The feature, called Transcribe, differs from Google Translate's older transcription feature that required you to input text or voice and then wait for the translation. However, despite its usefulness, the feature surprisingly didn't allow users to save transcripts. But that might change soon, as a teardown of the latest version of Google Translate (v6.8.0) has revealed code which suggests that Google is working to include a save transcripts feature in the app.

Learning a new language can be daunting, but thanks to the digital age, it's now easier than ever. While nothing beats classic learning methods and actually immersing yourself in a new language, apps like Duolingo help hone your skills in your free time. Learning a new language is, however, not as essential as it used to be, as apps like Google Translate help you with understanding another language, either spoken out loud or written. Some people also use it as a complementary tool to learn a new language, and thanks to the app's phrasebook feature, you can save phrases you use constantly so you can check them out later on. Now, we've learned that this feature will be improved even further with the addition of a flashcards feature.
