It seems like we can’t go a day without seeing “artificial intelligence” in the news, and this past week was no exception in no small part thanks to the Snapdragon Tech Summit. Every year, Qualcomm unveils the plethora of improvements it brings to its Hexagon DSP and the Qualcomm AI Engine, a term they use for their entire heterogeneous compute platform - CPU, GPU, and DSP - when talking about AI workloads. A few years ago, Qualcomm’s insistence on moving the conversation away from traditional talking points, such as year-on-year CPU performance improvements, seemed a bit odd. Yet in 2019 and with the Snapdragon 865, we see that heterogeneous computing is indeed at the helm of their mobile computing push, as AI and hardware-accelerated workloads seem to sneak their way into a breadth of use cases and applications, from social media to everyday services.

When Qualcomm unveiled their new Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, they touted substantial improvements in all aspects of mobile computing. For the average user, it's easy to understand the end user benefits behind the CPU and GPU improvements that Qualcomm made in the Snapdragon 855. Better CPU performance translates to apps loading faster and better GPU performance translates to better framerates when gaming. What's less intuitive for users to understand is AI (artificial intelligence), and specifically, machine learning techniques that app and services increasingly adopt such as artificial neural networks. Qualcomm made huge gains in AI workload performance with the Snapdragon 855 thanks to improvements in computing across the board, and especially due to the revamped Hexagon 690 DSP. We sat down with Gary Brotman, Head of AI and Machine Learning Strategy and Product Planning at Qualcomm, and Ziad Asghar, Vice President of Snapdragon Roadmap Planning and AI, XR, Competitive Strategy at Qualcomm, to learn more about the improvements Qualcomm made in AI workloads.

Last month, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. The Snapdragon 855 is the mobile platform that will power most Android flagship smartphones in 2019. Qualcomm has made substantial year-on-year improvements with their next generation mobile platform. The Snapdragon 855 mobile platform is built on a 7nm manufacturing process and offers an impressive 45% jump in CPU performance over the Snapdragon 845. The improvements in computation across the board allow Qualcomm to boast excellent AI performance on the new Snapdragon 855. There's a lot of information to unpack here and we've done our best to show how Qualcomm has improved performance and AI on the Snapdragon 855. However, we still had questions of our own after the product unveiling, so we sat down with Travis Lanier, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm, to talk about the Kryo 485 CPU and AI on Qualcomm's new mobile platform.

The Snapdragon 845 - the newest system-on-chip in Qualcomm's Snapdragon family - is a powerhouse of a processor. It boasts speedy CPU cores, a third-generation Spectra image signal processor (ISP), and an architecture that’s 30 percent more power-efficient than the previous generation. But arguably its most impressive component is a co-processor -- the Hexagon 685 DSP -- that's tailor made for artificial intelligence and machine learning.
