Nokia XR20 in grey and blue colors

Google released the final build of Android 12 in October of last year, and by the end of the year, many of the most popular Android smartphones were already updated. However, it's taking some manufacturers longer than others to upgrade all their phones, and HMD Global has been slow to roll out Android 12 to its Nokia-branded devices. HMD is now releasing the update to yet another budget Nokia phone, the Nokia XR20.

HMD Global has been selling Nokia-branded Android phones for years at this point, though in recent history, it has started to slip behind with software support. One of the most impressive new features in Android 12 is the automatic Material You theming system, which changes the appearance of your device (specifically, the colors of certain interface elements) based on the current wallpaper. Codenamed 'Monet,' the theming system is currently exclusive to Google's own Pixel devices, but now we know at least some manufacturers are planning to support some variation of it.

HMD Global released the first batch of Nokia-branded Android phones as affordable devices with frequent and fast Android OS updates. The company delivered on that promise for a few years, but as its product lineup has ballooned in size (there are already seven phones for 2021), HMD has struggled to maintain a speedy update cycle. Now the company is delaying Android 11 updates for most of its phones.

A New Year's Resolution for OEMs: Please fix your smartphone branding

Smartphone OEMs keep messing up their branding. Today, we're gonna look at some of the worst offenders, and some of the better ones.

A phone's branding is essential. Potential smartphone buyers don't usually have the time to go through a spec sheet to see how one particular phone is better than the other. We're drifting back into the era where almost all smartphones look exactly the same: glass and metal sandwiches (or sometimes glass on plastic) with two, three, or four cameras mounted on the back, and a display with either a notch or a hole-punch camera. This is where phone branding and marketing come into play, which, unfortunately, have become increasingly more confusing over the past year.

HMD Global has had decent success with its Nokia-branded Android smartphones since they started licensing the name back in 2016. The new Nokia's approach to Android smartphones was an interesting one: with a focus on updates and software without unnecessary fluff and gimmicks, their phones were pretty close to what Motorola released in 2013 and 2014 under Google's ownership. One of their most recent smartphones is the Nokia 7.2 (which, as a fun fact, is also one of the very few Nokia phones that shipped with an unlockable bootloader, albeit this was unintentional and patched later on). Users of the Nokia 7.2 might be glad to know that the device is now receiving its dose of Android 10 through an OTA update.

While HMD Global has been the subject of controversy regarding their cooperation with the custom development scene, their commitment to software updates certainly can't go unnoticed. They're one of the first major smartphone manufacturers to release Android Pie officially for their devices. They were also one of the first manufacturers to bring Google's Digital Wellbeing to their Android One-powered smartphones - the Nokia 7 Plus and the Nokia 6 Plus. At the time, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer of Nokia products, Juho Sarvikas, also said that Android Pie would make its way to other smartphones in the company's lineup. The Nokia 6.1 is now the latest phone from the company to receive the update, and it's rolling out now.
