The smartphone industry is known for being fast-paced, with new devices coming out one after the other. With all the rapid releases and the shiny new hardware, people often forget that devices that have already been launched do not necessarily become unusable just because their successors have been released. Regarding the obvious lack of official software updates in the long run, we are constantly impressed by some of the feats pulled off by third-party developers in our forums. While Android 11 is the latest Android dessert, Android 10 is still a new thing for some legacy devices. The latest device that joined the Android 10 family is Honor 5X, which has just received an unofficial port of LineageOS 17.1.

Team Win Recovery Project, or TWRP for short, has become synonymous with custom recovery for Android devices. The open-source solution offers a plethora of features that are otherwise not provided by a stock recovery environment, such as the ability to flash ZIP packages that contain aftermarket OSes or different mods, make and restore partition-level data backups, modify protected files, and much more. However, it is virtually impossible to construct a generic TWRP image due to the nature of Android's recovery implementation. A device-specific TWRP build, on the other hand, has to achieve a certain degree of stability before gaining "official" status and being offered on the team's website. Since our previous coverage, the team has officially added support for the ASUS ZenFone 5Z, the BQ Aquaris VS and VS Plus, and reinstated support for the Xiaomi Redmi 6 and the Redmi 6A.

The Honor 5X was launched in October of 2015 in China and then made its way to the US and Europe in early 2016. For a price tag of just $199 in early 2016, the Honor 5X was one of the best budget purchases you could make in the USA at the time. XDA's Creative Director, Mario Serrafero, was impressed with the overall package that the device offered, especially keeping in mind that it was not a flagship and that the US market saw very few value options in that price range. Of course, this was three and a half years ago, and the smartphone landscape has drastically changed. The Honor 5X, obviously, no longer receives any official updates, but the device did receive official LineageOS 15.1 based on Android Oreo. Now, the device is receiving its first builds of official LineageOS 16 thanks to the efforts of developers BadDaemon, Dobroslaw Kijowski, and Joel Hans.

AOSP based versions of Android have a lot of fans. Pure Android is fast and has no additional applications or services that clutter the user experience. While we see a lot of Android Pie ROMs popping up lately, Android Oreo is still a new thing for some devices. The latest device that joined the Android Oreo family is Honor 5X, which has just received an unofficial port of LineageOS 15.1.
