Huawei's sub-brand Honor may have been a latecomer in terms of Android updates until a year ago but it is slowly ramping up its speed with Android 9 Pie. Honor has been working on EMUI 9 updates based on Android 9 Pie for a number of devices and this is not limited to latest flagship, Honor View 20. Aside from the View 20, late 2017's flagship Honor View 10, last year's performer Honor Play, and budget-oriented Honor 8X have already received the stable Android 9 Pie update while Honor 8 Pro and Honor 7X are currently under the beta program. Now, the EMUI 9 beta is coming to two more devices - namely Honor 9N and Honor 9 Lite.

Huawei and Honor devices are set to be locked down entirely next week starting July 22nd, but it's still not too late to unlock your bootloader. Once you unlock your bootloader, you open up the possibility to install custom ROMs such as LineageOS or Resurrection Remix on Project Treble-supported devices. We reviewed the Honor 9 Lite running a pure AOSP ROM a few months ago, and the performance improvement was night and day between AOSP and EMUI. However, the biggest problem with these AOSP ROMs is the camera performance which this port of the Huawei P20 camera app aims to solve.

AOSP on the Honor 9 Lite - How Stock Android Made a Budget Device Better

We recently reviewed the Honor 9 Lite, a budget phone released by a subsidiary of Huawei. With some semi-decent specs consisting of a Kirin 659, 3GB of RAM, and an 18:9 1080p display coming in at 229 euro, it's not a bad phone for the price. While there are certainly better options in the same price range, it can often be easier to purchase a phone locally, Especially since this device has been launched officially in the West.

Honor, a subsidiary of China-based Huawei, faces fierce competition in the budget sector. With the likes of Xiaomi to contend with, the company has had trouble gaining a foothold outside of developing markets such as India. Indeed, its expansion into the West has been slow. But it is ramping up with the release of the Honor 9 Lite.

The budget Honor 9 Lite (currently available at a huge discount in a Flipkart Flash Sale) was first announced in December for the Chinese market before making its way over to India last month. This week, Honor announced that the device is now available in several Western European markets. With a €229 price point, HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC, 5.65" 18:9 FullView display, and Android Oreo, some of you may be wondering if this smartphone is worth the purchase. To evaluate that claim, I'm going to be doing a full review of this device in the coming weeks, but I wanted to give my initial hands-on impression before I really dive into the nitty-gritty details.
