Huawei Mate X2

Bleeding edge consumer products in a new product category usually take a year or two to find its footing, and that’s looking to be the case with foldable smartphones. Huawei’s third attempt, the Mate X2, is the most polished and impressive foldable smartphone hardware yet, improving on not just Huawei's previous foldables, but one-up the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 as well. In this article let’s examine what makes the Huawei Mate X2 stand out from the pack.

Huawei has been engaged in a deadlock with the US government for nearly two years now. But that hasn’t stopped the Chinese company from building some of the best smartphones out there. The Huawei Mate 40 series that launched in October this year was the prime example of it, with Huawei flexing its muscles with some of the best smartphone hardware and design on display. And if this new leak is anything to go by, it looks like the company will continue its march forward on the same path next year as well.

Huawei begins its long-shot transition from Android with a Harmony OS beta for select smartphones and tablets

Huawei's first party operating system, Harmony OS, is now available in developer beta, marking the first transitional step away from Android.

When we talk about mobile operating systems, there are only two major solutions around today: Android and iOS. And Apple's tight control over iOS means that Android is the only true solution for OEMs building their own smartphones. But Android also is very much dependent on Google despite being open-source, thanks to Google's grip with GMS and the entire ecosystem of interdependency around the GMS framework. Huawei has experienced this the hard way, with odds stacked against its favor ever since the U.S. Commerce Department put it on the Entity List, cutting off the company's access to new GMS license agreements. The road without Google's assistance was tough, but Huawei trudged along with its own HMS solutions. The Chinese tech giant is far from giving up on its smartphone business, though, and it now begins a long-shot transition away from a GMS-less Android onto its own first-party OS, Harmony OS.

The Huawei FreeLace Pro launched at HDC 2020 alongside a slew of other Huawei products. I enjoyed the Huawei FreeBuds Pro which launched at that event and crowned them as the best TWS earphones I've ever used. Huawei was kind enough to send us a pair of the FreeLace Pro for review just a couple of weeks back, and they sound just as good. Both the FreeLace Pro and the FreeBuds Pro offer 40dB active noise cancellation. At a starting price of €119 in Europe, these are significantly cheaper than the FreeBuds Pro.

While Huawei's smartphone software has been hit and miss over the years, it's undeniable that its smartphone hardware has been top-notch -- arguably the best in the industry. And over the past couple of years, the Chinese tech giant has focused on bringing that same hardware prowess to other consumer products as part of the company's "1+8+N" initiative. One of these products is truly wireless earphones. Huawei's released a few of these before, and while they were solid offerings, they lacked the sleek design or full suite of intelligent features like noise cancellation and active transparency mode of Apple's AirPods Pro -- until now, with the Huawei FreeBuds Pro.

Huawei has been backed into a corner for quite some time now, because of US restrictions on the Chinese company. To get some breathing room from its current tight spot, the company has reportedly even finalized a buyer for its Honor smartphone business. Some more relief came in the form of a license to purchase Samsung displays and Sony image sensors. And now, we can expect the company to survive for a bit longer, as Qualcomm has now received a license to sell 4G chipsets to Huawei.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is arguably the most intriguing smartphone launch of the year, what with it being potentially the very last Huawei phone to use a Kirin chip due to ongoing U.S. sanctions that prevent most of the world's chipmakers, including Huawei's longtime partner TSMC, from supplying silicon for Huawei.

Huawei's AppGallery is the company's homegrown alternative to the Google Play Store. It comes preloaded on all new Huawei and Honor devices, but it offers a significantly smaller collection of apps. To remedy this, Huawei has been making constant efforts to bring more developers to the platform. And developers have taken notice. Over the last few months, several apps have made their way to the platform, including popular ones like HERE WeGo, Deezer, Tidal, BBC News, Tinder, Telegram, and TikTok. Now, Intel-owned mobility service provider Moovit has also published its app on AppGallery.

With advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) baring infinite opportunities, Huawei is combining all that is known of real-life with new virtual possibilities to provide more consumers and developers access to a new world.

Want to pick up a shiny new pair of truly wireless earbuds for your smartphone or laptop? Honestly, up until recently, I don't think Huawei would have crossed my mind when it comes to buying a pair of TWS earbuds. I was particularly disappointed with the Honor Magic Earbuds, and those are basically just a rebranded version of the Huawei FreeBuds 3i. I am smitten with the Huawei FreeBuds Pro, however. These new TWS earbuds pretty much have everything going for them.

Last week, Huawei dropped an ominous announcement that the Huawei Mate 40 will likely be the last smartphone with a HiSilicon Kirin chip. Contract chipmakers have been barred from using US-developed tech to fabricate chips for Huawei after September 15, 2020, thus effectively barring TSMC from fabricating Kirin chipsets. Now, it appears that Qualcomm is lobbying for a license to sell its 5G Snapdragon SoCs to Huawei for use in its flagships and other lineups.
