Huawei Mobile Services, or HMS, is Huawei’s alternative to GMS, and it similarly consists of user-facing applications as well as core background services. HMS provides an experience that is consistent across devices and independent of the platform version. The HMS ecosystem is comprised of HMS Apps, the HMS Core, and the HMS Capabilities that the Core enables through its available APIs. The latest milestone update to HMS Core 5.0 introduces several APIs and improvements to existing APIs.

The trade restrictions imposed on Huawei by the US have forced the company to lay more emphasis on developing its own products. Over the last year, the company has managed to set up an ecosystem of alternative products to replace all of Google's products that it currently doesn't have access to. These include HMS Core, which is an alternative to Google Mobile Services, Harmony OS, which is a first-party alternative to Google's Android, and AppGallery, which replaces the Google Play Store. But while its ecosystem is almost complete, Huawei still needs the support of third-party developers to get its own services at par with Google's offerings. To do this, the company has been sending developers requests to publish their apps on AppGallery and has announced a new Preferential Policy to give developers a bigger cut of the revenue. Now, in a bid to get developers to build more apps using HMS Core, the company has announced a new contest offering $1 million in prizes for the best apps and games that use the GMS alternative.

Several app-based contact tracing solutions have arisen in the past few weeks, some of which are based on Google and Apple's Exposure Notification API, and now developers of public health agencies have access to another COVID-19 contact tracing API: Huawei's Contact Shield API.

Huawei can't launch new Android smartphones with Google apps before May 2021 as Trump extends trade ban

The US Administration has extended the trade ban on Huawei till May 2021, preventing the company from launching new devices with GMS for another year.

The last few smartphones launched by Huawei and its sub-brand Honor don't come with Google Mobile Services (GMS) or the Google Play Store. Instead, they feature Huawei's own alternatives to these services, namely Huawei Mobile Services Core (HMS Core) and Huawei AppGallery. This is due to the fact that on May 15th, 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 13873, declaring a "national emergency" under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, in order to limit the ability of U.S. companies to do business with entities deemed to be national security threats, including Huawei and its subsidiaries. The executive order was scheduled to lapse this month, however, a recent report from Reuters reveals that it has now been extended for another year.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is objectively one of the best hardware releases of this year, featuring practically every meaningful innovation in the phone world so far, and introducing a fair few of its own. However, despite offering one of the best sets of features available on an Android smartphone, it cannot be recommended to a large swathe of users. And the blame for such an exclusion lies solely on the political situation between Huawei and the USA, which has forced the company to release an otherwise-excellent piece of hardware without the most crucial bit of functional Android: Google Play Services. The world could do nothing but watch as an Android giant attempted to figure out its way in a Google-less world. Huawei needed functional and reliable alternatives for itself and its users, and it needed them yesterday.
