Huawei is finally bringing the long-due EMUI 10 based Android 10 update to the P20 Pro and Mate 10. The company has begun rolling out the update globally, with users in Europe and Asia reportedly receiving the OTA. This is in line with Huawei’s EMUI 10 update roadmap which states both phones will start receiving the stable EMUI 10 update in mid-June.

EMUI 9.1 is the latest update to Huawei's OS based on Android Pie. While Huawei has not disclosed a clear changelog between EMUI 9.1 and EMUI 9, the new update brings features like improvements to the GPU Turbo mode, incoming call videos for contacts, optimizations for HiVoice, triggering voice assistants through a long press on the power button, improvements to PC continuity and more changes varying on a per device model basis.

Huawei recently refreshed its photography-centric P-series with the Huawei P30 series including the P30 Pro, which comes with a charming quad camera setup and 5X optical zoom. In certain regions like India, the company also announced the Lite version of Huawei P30, with one camera short of the P30 Pro, much affordable pricing, and lower processing power. Now, the company might be looking to announce a new smartphone in the P-series, albeit as an extension to the last year's P20 series. As per leaked information, the Huawei P20 Lite 2019 will be announced soon and will feature a hole-punch camera and quad-cameras.

Huawei's reputation with developers is going from bad to worse thanks to VLC player. Because of EMUI's aggressive background restrictions, VLC would randomly stop playing audio when in the background. As a result, the developers have blacklisted numerous Huawei devices from installing it from the Google Play Store. This is thanks to the application receiving many 1-star reviews from device owners who did not know it was caused by their phone. You can still sideload the APK from their website just fine, however. You just can't see it on the Google Play Store.

While most companies do release kernel sources in a (somewhat) timely manner, there are some companies that take their sweet, sweet time in doing so. One such example is Xiaomi, which to their credit has recently upped their game by releasing the kernel source code in the timeframe they agreed on. Having access to the kernel source code can be a huge boon for developers seeking to create custom AOSP-based ROMs and custom kernels for a smartphone. Although the company recently closed down official bootloader unlocking tools, Huawei has still released the kernel source code for all Kirin 980 and Kirin 970 smartphones running Android Pie (as they are still required to do so).

Ever since the official release of Android 9 Pie for the Google Pixel smartphones, we've been tracking the update progress of all the major Android device makers. A report states Huawei has been found cheating in benchmarks. UL delisted the Huawei P20/P20 Pro, Huawei Nova 3, and Honor Play from 3DMark in response.
Benchmarks have always been a popular way to measure the performance of hardware, both in the PC and mobile space. Benchmark cheating occurs when a device maker unfairly tries to game a benchmark by making the results score better than they actually are. Cheating can happen in any benchmark tests including those that measure the CPU, system, or GPU performances. The obvious goal of cheating at benchmarks is so customers will be convinced that product A is better than product B. Unfortunately, this means that underlying weaknesses in hardware are masked by cheating. Put simply, it's a lose-lose situation for all parties involved in the industry: chip vendors, device makers, and most of all, end-consumers.

A few days ago, Huawei unveiled the latest version of its EMUI software: EMUI 9. Based on Android 9 Pie, the latest version of EMUI brings a new design with a streamlined user interface, various unspecified software optimizations to improve performance, GPU Turbo 2.0, Huawei's take on Google's Digital Wellbeing service, and a new gesture navigation system on top of the standard Android Pie platform features. Huawei opened up applications for an EMUI 9 beta program but limited it to 100 members in select regions who own the Honor 10, Honor View 10, Honor Play, Huawei Mate 10/Mate 10 Pro, or Huawei P20/P20 Pro. The beta software that was shown off at IFA 2018 did not include the new gestures, but we managed to get our hands on an updated version of the EMUI 9 beta that does have the new gesture controls.

Huawei and Honor devices are set to be locked down entirely next week starting July 22nd, but it's still not too late to unlock your bootloader. Once you unlock your bootloader, you open up the possibility to install custom ROMs such as LineageOS or Resurrection Remix on Project Treble-supported devices. We reviewed the Honor 9 Lite running a pure AOSP ROM a few months ago, and the performance improvement was night and day between AOSP and EMUI. However, the biggest problem with these AOSP ROMs is the camera performance which this port of the Huawei P20 camera app aims to solve.
