Huawei Harmony OS
Huawei begins its long-shot transition from Android with a Harmony OS beta for select smartphones and tablets

Huawei's first party operating system, Harmony OS, is now available in developer beta, marking the first transitional step away from Android.

When we talk about mobile operating systems, there are only two major solutions around today: Android and iOS. And Apple's tight control over iOS means that Android is the only true solution for OEMs building their own smartphones. But Android also is very much dependent on Google despite being open-source, thanks to Google's grip with GMS and the entire ecosystem of interdependency around the GMS framework. Huawei has experienced this the hard way, with odds stacked against its favor ever since the U.S. Commerce Department put it on the Entity List, cutting off the company's access to new GMS license agreements. The road without Google's assistance was tough, but Huawei trudged along with its own HMS solutions. The Chinese tech giant is far from giving up on its smartphone business, though, and it now begins a long-shot transition away from a GMS-less Android onto its own first-party OS, Harmony OS.

Huawei starts rolling out EMUI 11 stable update to the P40 series

Stable EMUI 11 update has started rolling out to the Huawei P40 and the P40 Pro ahead of the expected schedule.

The U.S. administration's trade restrictions on Huawei has limited how the Chinese giant employs Android on its devices. But, that has not disturbed their schedule of incremental updates to their custom Android skin — EMUI — due every year. Back in September, Huawei introduced EMUI 11 with improvement to the user experience and privacy. Then early on in November, some users started reporting about receiving the stable EMUI 11 update on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. Now, there are reports about the stable update reaching Huawei P40 and the P40 Pro smartphones.

What is the Difference Between a Periscope and Telephoto Camera?

Periscope telephoto cameras provide up to 10X optical zooming on smartphones while minimizing noise. Here is how periscope cameras work.

Cameras are indispensable to phones. Ever since the first camera phone, cameras have been so central to phones' branding that many companies cash in solely on their devices' abilities to capture Pixel-perfect (pun definitely intended) photographs. Over recent years, phone makers have channeled their creative energy into improving cameras and accommodating more sensors on smartphones. The evident result is the phenomenal increase in competition between brands to offer more cameras for fewer bucks. Innovation has been the key to surviving in this competitive environment, and one camera technology that has been the epitome of innovation is periscope zoom cameras. With instant 5X or 10X optical magnification, periscopic telephoto cameras facilitate quick and easy zooming into the far-off distance.

EMUI 11 Hands-on: Huawei's latest Android update makes multitasking easier

EMUI 11 is the latest Android-based software release from Huawei. It introduces new AOD designs, animations, and multitasking features.

By

At its annual Developer Conference today, Huawei unveiled EMUI 11, the company's latest Android-based software release for smartphones and tablets. EMUI, formerly called Emotion UI, is now in its 9th iteration, having initially released back in 2012 using Google's Android 2.3 as a base. After Google released Android 8 Oreo back in 2017, Huawei bumped the EMUI version from 5 to 8 in order to match the Android number version. Thus, today's EMUI 11 release was widely expected to be based on Google's new Android 11 update, but that's not the case on the beta we loaded onto our Huawei P40 Pro unit the other day. Instead, Huawei's latest Android software is still based on Google's Android 10 release from last year—but that doesn't mean there aren't enough upgrades here to justify an EMUI version bump.

Huawei has been striving to give several reasons for users to buy its phones despite the unavailability of Google's apps. It has been bolstering its own App Gallery as a replacement for the Google Play Store by onboarding several third-party applications like HERE WeGo Maps to run on its devices. Against all odd, Huawei launched its flagship P40 series in March this year featuring a 50MP UltraVision camera with RYYB sensor and a 32MP selfie camera across all three models, including Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+. Huawei has also been releasing frequent EMUI updates to improve the camera.

A number of premium and mid-range smartphones these days feature a Pro mode in the camera app that lets users make manual adjustments to the ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure while capturing images. More often than not, the Pro mode also includes a RAW image capture setting that lets users save captured images as .dng files. While there are many benefits to capturing images in the RAW format, it does have a few drawbacks. For instance, when you capture images in a common format like JPEG, the smartphone can automatically correct geometric distortions or exposure issues in the images. However, when you capture RAW images, these issues aren't fixed automatically. To address this issue, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom offer device-specific lens correction profiles for several Android smartphones that you can use to quickly correct your images.

The hole-punch camera cutout is one of those display design elements that has seen widespread adoption among smartphone makers in the last year. If you're not a fan of mechanical pop-up cameras or notches, the hole-punch cutout layout is indeed a viable alternative. You can even utilize the space around the camera hole(s) as a battery indicator on some phones using a third-party app named Energy Ring.

Huawei's flagship P40 series launched with the company's latest custom Android skin — EMUI 10.1 — earlier this year in March. Shortly after the launch, Huawei rolled out EMUI 10.1.0.121 to the devices, which brought some camera improvements, a new Huawei Assistant top-level setting, and the Android security patches for April 2020. The new Huawei Assistant setting led us to believe that the company would soon roll out its Celia voice assistant to the devices. As expected, the voice assistant was enabled on the P40 series just a few days after the update started rolling out. Now, the company is pushing another major update for the Huawei P40 series, which adds a few more useful features into the mix.

Huawei is trying hard to decouple Google services from their custom Android skin, EMUI, due to the trade ban imposed on the company by the US government. Replacing the Google Play Store with the Huawei AppGallery and shipping Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) instead of Google Mobile Services are some of the notable steps in that direction. The OEM has also created a dedicated voice assistant named Celia as an alternative to the Google Assistant. Celia was originally announced during the online launch event of the Huawei P40 series, but the initial firmware packages didn't feature the voice assistant.

Huawei launched its flagship Huawei P40 series earlier this year in March. The devices launched with the company's custom Android skin — EMUI 10 — based on Android 10. However, due to the trade ban imposed on the company by the U.S. government, the smartphones shipped with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and the Huawei AppGallery instead of Google Mobile Services and the Google Play Store. As an alternative to the Google Assistant, Huawei also announced its own Celia voice assistant at the launch but the devices did not ship with the new voice assistant when they initially went on sale.

Huawei is among the leading pioneers of smartphone photography and it has proved this time and again with its P Series. Despite the hurdles due to the executive order passed by the U.S. President last year, Huawei has been launching new flagship phones, although in select markets. It launched the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and the P40 Pro+ last month with a horde of exciting camera features which make it a desirable phone for many photography enthusiasts. Huawei is now hosting a global photography competition and the winners will win a Huawei P40 Pro and cash prizes up to $10,000.

After months of leaks and teasers, Huawei finally announced its flagship P40 series earlier this month. As you'd expect, the latest flagships from Huawei packed in some impressive hardware but they lacked one key component on the software front — Google Mobile Services. Instead of running Google Mobile Services (GMS) like all other Android devices, Huawei's P40 series featured Huawei Mobile Services — an in-house alternative that was developed as a result of the trade ban imposed on the company. Interestingly though, a recent report from the Financial Times claims that the Huawei P40 Pro still makes use of some US-made components.

Despite everything that has happened during the past 4 weeks, February and March were exciting months for the smartphone ecosystem. First, we saw Xiaomi announce (both in China and for the global market) their newest flagship smartphones, the Xiaomi Mi 10 and its Pro variant, with bleeding-edge hardware, a very capable camera, and equally steep pricing, alongside the Mi 10 Lite, a mid-range smartphone with support for 5G connectivity. Then, Huawei took the stage in an online event to announce the Huawei P40 series, which, in the case of the P40 Pro, raised the camera bar even higher once again and brought a revolutionary quad curved panel -- which also greatly reduced bezels. We're also expecting the announcement of the OnePlus 8 series, OnePlus' newest flagship lineup, very soon.

Back in December last year, we first learned that Huawei will be launching its flagship P40 series in March 2020. At the time, the company's CEO, Richard Yu, also confirmed that the Huawei P40 series will be the first to ship with its new HMS ecosystem. For the unaware, Huawei's HMS Ecosystem is an alternative to Google Mobile Services which consists of both user-facing apps and background apps. The company first showcased the HMS Ecosystem back in November last year, but since then it hasn't made an appearance on any device from the company. But that may change soon, as the company has now revealed that it will be launching the Huawei P40 series later this month.

We first learned about the devices back in December last year, when the company's CEO, Richar Yu, confirmed that the Huawei P40 series will be the first to ship with its new HMS ecosystem. Soon thereafter, leaks regarding the upcoming devices started popping up online and we learned that the flagship P40 Pro could feature a newer periscope telephoto lens for 10x optical zoom. Then, earlier this year in January, leaked renders of the Huawei P40 series showed off a few key details about the three devices.
