Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 670

Huawei's current flagship SoC is the HiSilicon Kirin 980. The Kirin 980 was announced at IFA 2018, and it is featured in the Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Honor Magic 2, Honor View 20, and the Huawei Mate X. HiSilicon's release schedule means that Huawei's flagship Mate series contains a new SoC, while the flagship P series re-uses the same SoC five months later. This happened with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Huawei P20 Pro, and it will happen with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro's Kirin 980 SoC being used by the Huawei P30 Pro. Huawei's next high-end SoC, therefore, is expected to debut in the Huawei Mate 30, and it will be called the HiSilicon Kirin 985.

All of this should mean it has some of the best performance of any phone, right?. We put this to the test to see if it's possible to get flagship performance at around half the cost of flagships from other major OEMs.

Honor recently launched their newest Honor 20 flagship series at an event in London, giving us two capable devices in the form of the Honor 20 and the Honor 20 Pro. These new smartphones bring over new camera technologies in order to compete with the recent competition from other flagship devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi 9 and the ASUS ZenFone 6. Much like the new Honor phones, the previously launched Honor View20 also brought in new features like the punch hole display and the 48MP Sony IMX 586 sensor, making it one of the first devices launched with this now-popular camera sensor.

A new challenger has entered the battle of the 2019 budget flagships: Honor. The smartphone brand unveiled its latest flagship smartphone duo, the Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro, at an event in London today. It’s only been a few months since the Honor View20 launch, but the recent flood of impressive-looking budget flagship smartphones like the OnePlus 7, Xiaomi Mi 9, and ASUS ZenFone 6 has prompted Honor to launch new smartphones with significant camera upgrades over the last generation model to stay competitive.

Honor View20 Retro Gaming Review: Testing the Kirin 980 against GameCube, Wii, PSP, and Dreamcast games

The Honor View20 can easily handle the best looking Android games, but how well does the Kirin 980 fare against GameCube/Wii, PSP, and Dreamcast emulation?

Part 1 of our Honor View20 gaming review focused on the View20's gaming performance in a dozen top Android games on the Play Store. As expected, the Honor View20 handled those games—even on their highest graphical settings—like a champ. Honor's View20 is a flagship smartphone with flagship hardware, so that's to be expected. Mobile game developers can't make games that are only playable on a handful of devices or they would run out of business. Although some of the games we tested did push the Honor View20's Kirin 980 a bit, none of them really made the smartphone slow to a crawl. That's why we're back to test how well the Honor View20 handles console emulation.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro Review: 2018's Best Still Impresses in 2019

Arguably the best smartphone of 2018, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, still holds its own against 2019 flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Xiaomi Mi 9.

Huawei's rise to leadership in the global smartphone market has been astonishingly fast. For years, the conversation has been dominated by Samsung and Apple. In 2018, Huawei asserted itself as a class leader in flagship smartphones. The Mate series represents the pinnacle of Huawei's efforts in smartphone innovation, while the P series has made a name for itself with respect to camera improvements. The company's improvements have been so speedy that it has essentially forced market leader Samsung to respond to its innovations.

Honor View20 Gaming Review: Pushing the Kirin 980 to the limit

The Honor View20 with the Kirin 980 is a beast, but how well does it run the top Android games like Fortnite or PUBG? Find out in our gaming review!

Once struggling to find exactly where they fit into the market, Honor has nestled quite well into the sub-flagship premium niche and the bang-for-the-buck bargain category. Last time I (Daniel) owned an Honor device, it was the Honor 8 Pro, a device that had respectable specifications but ultimately failed to stand out. Since then, Honor has proven it can innovate with the Honor Magic 2 slider phone. Now, the company has proven its mettle once again with the Honor View20, a smartphone that holds its own against the very best of early 2019. We’ve already given our broad overview of the View20 in our video review, and we've extensively tested its camera performance (which is outstanding). Today, we are going to take an in-depth look at its gaming performance. How well does the Honor View20 perform when playing the top Android games from Google Play? Let's find out.

2018 was an exciting year for smartphone enthusiasts. We saw the beginnings of nearly bezel-less designs, multi-camera innovations, computational photography techniques to make handheld long exposure practical, ridiculously fast wired charging, the reintroduction of wireless charging into the mainstream, and so much more. Android smartphones have so many features to differentiate them, but they're all still powered by chipsets from either Qualcomm, HiSilicon, Samsung, or MediaTek. Most Android flagships in 2018 were powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, but in 2019 they'll mostly be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Although the new Qualcomm mobile platform was announced back in December during the Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm waited until CES 2019 last week to let us benchmark the Snapdragon 855.

Android smartphones all run on top of the Linux kernel, and OEMs are required to distribute the source code of all Linux kernel binaries that they ship on their devices. While most companies do release kernel sources in a (somewhat) timely manner, there are some companies that take their sweet, sweet time in doing so. One such example is Xiaomi, which to their credit has recently upped their game by releasing the kernel source code in the timeframe they agreed on. Having access to the kernel source code can be a huge boon for developers seeking to create custom AOSP-based ROMs and custom kernels for a smartphone. Although the company recently closed down official bootloader unlocking tools, Huawei has still released the kernel source code for all Kirin 980 and Kirin 970 smartphones running Android Pie (as they are still required to do so).

If there's something 2018 has shown us, it's that the future is bezel-less - and it looks beautiful. But as phones get closer to a perfect 100% screen-to-body ratio, device manufacturers are left to wonder what to do with the front-facing camera, the earpiece, and the sensors. A common approach these days has been using a display notch - a screen cutout on the top that makes room for those sensors. But notches usually aren't the most aesthetically pleasing solution. The Vivo Nex brought an alternative, ingenious approach to the table: A pop-up area with a front-facing camera module and other sensors which can be revealed when needed and hidden when not needed.

Jam-packed with features and an eye-watering spec sheet, Huawei unveiled their flagship Mate 20 Pro smartphone and its more modest Mate 20 sibling today. Huawei has done a few things to up the ante to make the Mate 20 Pro stand out. Three rear-facing cameras, a larger 6.39-inch curved OLED HDR display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, reverse wireless charging, and just about everything else on paper is bigger and better.

Although they're present at this year's IFA in Berlin, Chinese technology giant Huawei doesn't have a new flagship smartphone to announce. Instead, they're announcing the HiSilicon Kirin 980 system-on-chip—their latest chipset that will power future Huawei and Honor flagship smartphones like the Honor Magic 2, Huawei Mate 20, and Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Huawei's Kirin 980 is the first at a lot of things: It's the first commercially available chipset to be manufactured on TSMC's 7nm process, the first to embed ARM's Cortex-A76 CPU cores, the first to feature dual NPUs, and the first to support Cat. 21 LTE. Let's break down each aspect of this new chipset to better understand the latest offering from HiSilicon.
