Kiwi Browser new tab switcher layouts
Kiwi Browser update adds the option to turn off the grid layout for tabs

Kiwi Browser's latest update brings an option to disable the grid layout for tabs, along with several tab layouts. Read on to learn more.

Google first announced that it was planning to add a grid layout for tabs in Chrome for Android back in 2019. The new layout rolled to users later that year, but users initially had to enable some experimental flags to access it. With the Chrome 91 release earlier this year, Google finally set the grid layout as the default option, and the flags to disable the layout became inaccessible. The company even removed the old tab layout from Chromium code, preventing third-party forks of the Chromium browser, like Kiwi Browser, from giving users the old tab layout as an option. However, with its latest update, Kiwi Browser has reintroduced the ability to turn off the tab grid layout.

There are a lot of third-party web browsers out there, many of which use Chromium as their base. One such browser available on Android is called Kiwi Browser, developed by XDA Senior Member arnaud42. Kiwi is aimed at power users with features like a built-in ad-blocker, crypto-jacking protection, and most importantly, extensions support, a feature that most Chromium-based browsers — notably Google Chrome itself — lack on mobile.

While there are a variety of Chromium-based browsers on the Google Play Store, XDA Senior Member arnaud42's Kiwi Browser is in a league of its own. It was one of the first Chromium-based browsers for Android that offered support for Chrome extensions, and it packs in a ton of additional features that you won't find on other Chrome alternatives. But the best part about the browser is that it's completely open-source, which allows other Chromium-based browsers to bring some of its features to their users.

Kiwi Browser recently went open-source, extending extension support to other Chromium-based browsers. Now, at least three of them will be gaining support.

One of the advantages of open source software is the ability to allow forks of the main projects to exist. These forks can then take a different form to gain different features. If things go right, these changes and bug fixes can also make their way back upstream to the original project and then passed on to all other projects downstream that rely on it. Such is the beauty of open-source, and we are likely to see an example play out in a noticeable manner on our phones very soon. The code submitted upstream by the developer of the recently open-sourced Kiwi Browser will now make it easier for Chromium forks to enable extension support on mobile.

The open-source Chromium project, based on the Blink engine, serves as the basis for dozens of web browsers. There's the most popular, Google Chrome, along with others like Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Brave, and more. Most Chromium-based web browsers offer a handful of additional features not found in Google Chrome, but there are some that radically change the experience. Kiwi Browser by XDA Senior Member arnaud42 is one such web browser, and for the browser's second anniversary, the developer has fully open-sourced the web browser and all its features.

One of the great things about Android is the ability to choose a different default browser. Google Chrome is popular and great for most people, but not everyone loves it. Kiwi Browser is one of our favorite Chrome alternatives and it recently received an update that adds shortcuts in the address bar, 64-bit devices, and support for foldable phones.

Kiwi Browser by XDA Senior Member arnaud42 has been the browser of choice for many for a long time now. With extension support, a reachability button, an AMOLED friendly dark mode and lots more, it's really no wonder why it's exploded in popularity since its release last year. arnaud42 isn't done adding features to Kiwi Browser either, as the latest version now available on the Google Play Store has added text reflow support, translator settings, external download manager support and more. You can read the full changelog below.

Kiwi Browser's latest update brings Google Chrome Extensions to Android

The popular third-party Chromium-based browser called Kiwi Browser has just added a major new feature in its latest update: Google Chrome extension support!

Google's open-source Chromium browser is the basis for many web browsers that aren't developed by Google. Microsoft Edge for Windows, Brave Browser, and Opera are just some of the major web browsers running on the Blink browser engine (Chromium's browser engine.) Although these browsers all run on the same engine, the features they support can be wildly different. Two features that are missing on nearly every Chromium-based browser for Android are bookmark and history syncing with Google and support for Chrome extensions. The former can be solved with a desktop extension, which is how Brave Browser and Samsung Internet offer Chrome sync functionality. The latter, however, is far more complicated because Google's official Chromium builds for Android don't support Google Chrome extensions. That hasn't stopped XDA Senior Member arnaud42, the developer of Kiwi Browser, from adding Chrome extension support in the latest version of his browser.

Kiwi Browser has been a popular browser for many people for a while now. We've talked about it a few times here on the XDA Portal such as when it was first introduced in May of last year. It has grown since then with new features being added, including the recently added Edge History swipe gestures, and now the developer has a brand new update for fans of the web browser. The latest addition to the application adds a reachability button which is great with the ever-increasing screen sizes that smartphones are getting.

When you think about mobile web browsers, you probably think of Google Chrome or whatever comes default on your device. After all, why should I go much further than that if I simply want to browse the internet without issues or hiccups? Added to this is a majority of third-party mobile browsers use Chromium's browser engine (Blink) or straight up use Chromium as a base, meaning that the differences between browsers are, most of the time, pretty minimal. But "most of the time" is the key phrase here. There is still a number of third-party browsers that are still able to make a case for themselves, even if they're Chromium-based. One such example is Kiwi Browser.
