[Update: New Beta] An early Android Pie beta leaks for the European LG G6

LG is working on the Android Pie update for the LG G6. We know this because an early beta build has leaked for the European H870 model.

Korean smartphone brand LG has disappointingly been slow at providing major Android system upgrades when compared to its competitors. The early 2017 LG G6 launched with Android 7.0 Nougat on board, and while it did receive an update to Android 8.0 Oreo, it hasn't yet received Android 9 Pie. According to LG's Android Pie update roadmap, the G6 is expected to receive the update in Q3, meaning within the next 3 months. Now, we've learned that Telegram user @backryun found the upcoming Android 9 Pie build for the LG G6, which was verified by user @Pascal as being a beta build for the H870 European model. Then, a Redditor on /r/LGG6 flashed the build and shared screenshots and a video showing off the update.

LG made prototypes of the G6 with the Snapdragon 835. Here's one of them.

LG was expecting to be using the Snapdragon 835 in the LG G6. This is evidenced by the fact that they actually made prototypes with the 835 processor.

Released back in March of 2017, the LG G6 was decently received by the smartphone community. It was a solid device that cost a fair amount less than other flagships of its generation such as the Samsung Galaxy S8. Beyond that, however, it didn't receive much attention. That is, it didn't receive much attention after launch. Before launch, however, was a different story.

At the tail end of last month, we announced a dedicated forum for all of the Google Camera ports we had been seeing from the generous developer community. The forum has only been open for a couple of weeks so it looks a bit bare right now, but activity is picking up and some LG smartphone owners are having their chance in the spotlight. The Google Camera has made massive improvements to a lot of smartphones and now we have a port (which includes support for Night Sight) for the LG G6, LG V20 LG V30, and the LG V35 ThinQ.

Fortnite, the massively popular free-to-play battle royale game, is coming soon to Android. Epic Games said the game would launch this summer but we now know that the game will likely launch as an exclusive on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. It won't be on the Google Play Store (but possibly on Samsung Galaxy Apps) as the game will be distributed from Epic Games' website. If you're wondering whether your Android smartphone or tablet is powerful enough to run Fortnite Mobile on Android, we have put together a comprehensive list of software and hardware requirements based on a configuration file we obtained from a leaked build of the Android app.

One of the best developments in the Android community in recent years has been Google Camera ports. The Google Pixel's picture-taking ability is spectacular, even though the camera hardware may be better on other devices. A lot of the Google Pixel's photo magic comes from the Google Camera app. Features like HDR+ and portrait mode make the camera really shine. A vibrant community of developers and users has sprung up to bring these features to as many devices as possible.

Fortnite Mobile on Android is a long-awaited upcoming release of an already massively popular game. Since launching on Apple iOS, users of Android smartphones and tablets have been wondering when Fortnite would launch on their devices too. The Android release has apparently been delayed as we recently reported that it will be launching as an exclusive with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. This exclusivity will supposedly last 30 days. After 30 days, Fortnite Mobile on Android will become available for all supported Android devices. If you're wondering if your device will be supported, we've got the list of supported Android devices taken straight from Epic Games' own website.

LG G7 ThinQ Mini Review: A Great Camera and Beautiful Design Still Can't Help LG Stand Out

The LG G7 ThinQ is the company’s first big flagship phone for 2018. Let's take a look at the device's camera, design, and software.

The LG G7 ThinQ is the company’s first big flagship phone for 2018. In theory, the G series is supposed to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S9, but LG hasn’t had much luck in recent years. The company even talked about slowing down their phone release cycle. Despite the doom and gloom, the LG G7 ThinQ is here. The device is more of the same from LG: a solid phone that takes some chances, but ultimately will suffer the same fate as previous LG phones.

Navigation Gestures by XDA
Navigation Gestures updated with better Nav Bar hiding, App Launch action, Android P compatibility, & more

Navigation Gestures by XDA brings iPhone X style gesture control to any Android device. We've been hard at work and our latest update brings a lot!

We launched our Navigation Gestures app a little over 3 weeks ago, and since our last update, we've been hard at work to address the overwhelming amount of feedback we've received. Our app, which was originally designed to be a simple gesture control app based on the Apple iPhone X's gestures, has since gained a lot of customization features. We're not stopping there, either, as a future update will allow users to create gesture navigation controls in the vein of the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6. If you're tired of all the screen real-estate that your boring software navigation buttons take up, then you should give our latest app update a try. It's totally free for all of the basic actions and settings!

LG is rebranding the LG G6 as the LG G6 ThinQ, for some reason

LG is deeply invested into their AI and the ThinQ branding. They're now rebranding old devices with the ThinQ name. The LG G6 is the latest to get this treatment.

At Mobile World Congress 2018, LG announced a rather underwhelming revision of the LG V30, dubbed the LG V30S ThinQ. To call it a revision would be a stretch, actually. Internally, it was the same phone as the LG V30 with only minor differences. The greatest difference? The "ThinQ" moniker, which brought LG's set of AI features to the camera app and more. Then the LG G7 was announced with the same weird moniker attached to the phone's branding. As it's to be expected, the naming has been slammed by many. It sounds weird, looks weird, and it overcomplicated the phone's branding.

LG G7 ThinQ Hands-on: Improvements where it matters

The LG G7 ThinQ was officially launched today. It's a power-house with a large 6.1" super bright display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, and booming speakers. Oh, and it has a notch. Is the phone worth your attention? Let's find out.

By all accounts, the LG G7 ThinQ has had a troubled history. The Korean company's mobile division intended to launch the flagship at Mobile World Congress 2018 in March, reportedly, but put the breaks on plans after LG chief Jo Seong-jin ordered the team to "[start] from scratch" and find a "strong[er] selling point". For a time, it wasn't clear when the LG G6's successor would see the light of day—after LG posted a whopping 233 billion won ($219 million) quarterly loss in January (the 11th consecutive down quarter), Mr. Senong-jin cryptically told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show that LG would launch smartphones only "when they [were] needed".

After months of rumors and leaks, LG officially announced the LG G7 ThinQ today. The phone is the successor to last year's LG G6. It has a refreshed design, a display notch, the latest-generation system-on-chip (in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845), and a new dual camera setup.

LG opens a new center dedicated to delivering software updates faster

LG is opening a software update center in South Korea in the hopes of speeding up their software updates. Their first target is the LG G6 with the Android Oreo update.

One of the biggest disadvantages of Android as a platform is its fragmented nature, which leads to multiple problems including infrequent or non-existent updates on many different devices. Devices like the Google Pixel tend to go against the grain here with timely updates, but similar update patterns are few and far between on other Android smartphones. In an effort to speed up their software updates, LG is introducing a new software update center in South Korea which will work exclusively towards developing software updates in a timely fashion for all of their devices. It is located in LG's new research and development campus in Magok-dong, western Seoul.

Google Camera HDR+ port adds support for LG Smartphones' Wide Angle Lens

XDA Senior Member cstark27 has released a beta version of the Google Camera HDR+ port with support for the LG G5, LG G6, LG V20, and LG V30's wide angle lens camera.

The first version of the unofficial Google Camera HDR+ port was released in August. It made available Google Camera's HDR+ technology to non-Nexus and Pixel devices, and has been proven to significantly improve image quality in many cases. Since then, the port has received many updates, including RAW support, support for Motion Photos, support for Portrait Mode, and more. It is, in fact, quickly becoming one of the most sought after mods for Qualcomm-based devices (and it now works on some Exynos-based devices as well).

LG V30 Camera App Ported to the LG G6, Brings Graphy Features and More

The LG V30 has now landed, and LG G6 owners can get a taste of the new, feature rich V30 camera app thanks to a port bringing most new features!

The LG V30 is now officially here. And perhaps one of the biggest improvements compared to other LG devices is in the camera department. You could say that LG designed the V30's camera with camera buffs in mind: a 16-megapixel dual camera with a 13-megapixel wide angle lens, a f/1.6 aperture (although exif data says otherwise) and lots of other features. The newest flagship from LG also comes with a feature-rich camera app to match. And while LG G6 users are officially staying with the lesser one (at least until the next update), the V30's camera app has already been ported to the G6 in our forums.

Despite the lavish praise the Google Nexus line received thanks to its openness to development, the smartphones have received much criticism for their camera prowess. That changed (though some would argue it hasn't) with the release of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, however, as Google took a more consumer directed approach to their smartphones and the results showed in the camera department with the smartphones receiving top tier scores from DxOMark. Part of Google's more recent success with picture quality has been thanks to their amazing HDR+ technology that is exclusive to their smartphones. For the average user, HDR+ presents an incredibly easy way to produce stunning photographs without the need to learn manual photography or edit RAW images. And now, you can take advantage of Google Camera's HDR+ thanks to a modified version of the APK ported to work on any device with the Hexagon 680 ISP (found on the Snapdragon 820, 821, and 835 SoCs).

The LG G6 was the first major smartphone to hit the scene with a 18:9 aspect ratio, and while the Galaxy S8 may best it in a few different areas, the G6 still offers a whole lot to love. The tall and narrow Quad HD display looks great, the Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM provide for plenty of power, and the dual-camera setup with the wide angle lens add a lot of great functionality.

Just yesterday we wrote that LG is finally offering a way to unlock the bootloader on the LG G6 (H870). The community didn't need much time to port a custom recovery.

LG Electronics has officially announced that the LG G6 can now be officially unlocked through LG's developer unlock program. The program works on the European version with model name H870.

The LG G6 is one of the best devices released this year. With every new flagship phone comes a new version of the LG UX - this time version 6.0.

The LG G6 comes with a much enhanced camera application over the previous iteration. Thanks to XDA Recognized Developer and Contributor xpirt, you can use it today on the LG G5.
