LG V20 Android 9 update rolling out in Korea with LG G8 Android 10 update planned for this year
LG is now pushing the Android 9 Pie update for the LG V20 in Korea and the company plans to release the Android 10 update for the LG G8 later this year.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Korean smartphone manufacturer LG launched an Android 10 preview for its flagship LG G8 ThinQ. As part of the preview, the company shipped Android 10 exclusive features to the device, along with a couple of its own UI changes. However, LG's flagships from just a couple of years ago don't get the same treatment. The LG V20, which was considered the last true V series device from the company thanks to its secondary display, has been way behind on software updates. The device launched with Android 7 Nougat out of the box and it received the Android 8 Oreo stable build back in September last year. Now, over a year after its initial rollout, LG is offering an Android 9 Pie update for the device.
LG G5 and LG V20 no longer listed on LG's security update page
With every passing month of security updates, older devices get left by the wayside. It appears LG is ditching the LG V20 and LG G5.
Yesterday, Google released the January Android Security Updates for the Pixel 3, Pixel 2, and Google Pixel. We usually see OEMs release the security updates for their own devices shortly thereafter (though some are better than others). With every passing month, older devices get left by the wayside. It appears LG is ditching the LG V20 and LG G5.
Google Camera with Night Sight ported to the LG G6, V20, V30, and V35
We now have a Google Camera port (which includes support for Night Sight) for the LG G6, LG V20 LG V30, and the LG V35 ThinQ.
At the tail end of last month, we announced a dedicated forum for all of the Google Camera ports we had been seeing from the generous developer community. The forum has only been open for a couple of weeks so it looks a bit bare right now, but activity is picking up and some LG smartphone owners are having their chance in the spotlight. The Google Camera has made massive improvements to a lot of smartphones and now we have a port (which includes support for Night Sight) for the LG G6, LG V20 LG V30, and the LG V35 ThinQ.
Verizon LG V20 starts getting Android 8.0 Oreo update
You will be excited to hear that the Verizon Wireless variant of the LG V20 is finally getting its update to Android 8.0 Oreo.
A lot of us enthusiasts here at XDA not only want major version updates as quickly as possible, but we also want to receive those monthly security updates as soon as they are announced as well. However, there's another segment of the community who dislike Android's OTA updates and have actually become afraid of them due to a bad incident in the past. So depending on which side of the fence you fall on, you may or may not be excited to hear that the Verizon Wireless variant of the LG V20 is finally getting its update to Android 8.0 Oreo.
Download the best Google Camera port for your Android device
The Google Camera Port Hub is a centralized location where you can go to find a working port for your device. Currently, the hub has over 40 devices listed.
One of the best developments in the Android community in recent years has been Google Camera ports. The Google Pixel's picture-taking ability is spectacular, even though the camera hardware may be better on other devices. A lot of the Google Pixel's photo magic comes from the Google Camera app. Features like HDR+ and portrait mode make the camera really shine. A vibrant community of developers and users has sprung up to bring these features to as many devices as possible.
Korean LG V20 starts getting Android 8.0 Oreo update
The Korean models of the LG V20 are receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update in South Korea. It brings an improved blue light filter and June security patch.
The stable release of Android P isn't too far away, but device makers are continuing to roll out Android Oreo updates to their smartphones. Eleven months have passed since Android Oreo was made official, but the newest Android version is still installed only on 12.1% of Android devices (combining both Android 8.0 and Android 8.1). Yesterday we saw the US unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 receive the Android Oreo update. Now, the LG V20---another 2016 flagship smartphone---is receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update in South Korea.
Navigation Gestures updated with better Nav Bar hiding, App Launch action, Android P compatibility, & more
Navigation Gestures by XDA brings iPhone X style gesture control to any Android device. We've been hard at work and our latest update brings a lot!
We launched our Navigation Gestures app a little over 3 weeks ago, and since our last update, we've been hard at work to address the overwhelming amount of feedback we've received. Our app, which was originally designed to be a simple gesture control app based on the Apple iPhone X's gestures, has since gained a lot of customization features. We're not stopping there, either, as a future update will allow users to create gesture navigation controls in the vein of the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6. If you're tired of all the screen real-estate that your boring software navigation buttons take up, then you should give our latest app update a try. It's totally free for all of the basic actions and settings!
LG is backtracking on their bootloop lawsuit settlement
The settlement said that anyone who was affected by the bootloop issues could be entitled to a $700 rebate for a new LG device or $425, for each qualifying device. LG could be backtracking on that last part.
It's hard to bring up LG without hearing something about bootloops. To a lot of people. that's all LG is known for. Earlier this year, LG settled a class-action lawsuit related to many devices having bootloop issues. The list of affected devices included the LG V20, LG G5, LG V10, Nexus 5X, and LG G4. The settlement said that anyone who was affected by the issues could be entitled to a $700 rebate for a new LG device or $425, for each qualifying device. LG could be backtracking on that last part.
Google Camera HDR+ port adds support for LG Smartphones' Wide Angle Lens
XDA Senior Member cstark27 has released a beta version of the Google Camera HDR+ port with support for the LG G5, LG G6, LG V20, and LG V30's wide angle lens camera.
The first version of the unofficial Google Camera HDR+ port was released in August. It made available Google Camera's HDR+ technology to non-Nexus and Pixel devices, and has been proven to significantly improve image quality in many cases. Since then, the port has received many updates, including RAW support, support for Motion Photos, support for Portrait Mode, and more. It is, in fact, quickly becoming one of the most sought after mods for Qualcomm-based devices (and it now works on some Exynos-based devices as well).
Many LG Phones have a Root Checker Tool which Heavily Slows Down Device Performance
A root checker tool made by LG has been found on several flagship LG devices; it apparently degrades system performance heavily until disabled.
LG once had a mixed stance when it came to modifying their devices, though they've opened up in recent years and now most international LG phones have an easy way to unlock the bootloader. In fact, LG devices are now pretty popular among developers in our forums, with flagship lines having solid custom ROM support. However, for years now the company has been incorporating a root checking tool onto many of their devices, which users on our forums have found to significantly degrade performance until it is disabled.
The LG V20 Second Screen Finally Gets Custom Widget Support
The LG V20's Second Screen can finally be customized with custom widgets. A new API lets developers make custom Second Screen features.
The South Korean technology giant LG Electronics is best known by Android enthusiasts for its flagship LG G series of smartphones, but the company also offers the V series of smartphones which is best known for its signature Second Screen. Though many users are hotly anticipating this year's upcoming V30 model, fans of last year's model should not feel left out thanks to some recent developments. Developers on our LG V20 forums have been hard at work getting the Second Screen to work with AOSP-based custom ROMs, and they have finally done it. After months of effort, the LG V20 Second Screen can now show custom Second Screen, third-party widgets on both rooted and unrooted, stock-based or AOSP-based, devices.
