If you own a Xiaomi device that is either well past its prime or you just plain don't like MIUI, then you may be running one of the many custom ROMs available on our forums. The most popular custom ROM for Xiaomi devices is LineageOS, but last month the official builds were taken offline. Now, over a month later, the builds are being restored for most of the affected devices.

LineageOS was born from the ashes of CyanogenMod back in late 2016/early 2017, and since its beginning, the custom Android distribution has grown to support dozens of devices with millions of users. Back in late February of 2019, the team announced LineageOS 16 based on Android 9 Pie for 24 devices. Over the last few months, LineageOS 16 has added support for more devices like the OnePlus 6 and Essential Phone, but the custom ROM has also added a ton of new features along the way. To keep us updated on all the major changes made since the initial release of LineageOS 16, the team behind LineageOS has published a new blog post outlining their progress since March.

NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet is getting support for LineageOS 15.1

New builds of LineageOS 15.1, based on Android 8.1 Oreo, will be released on a weekly basis for the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet.

The NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet was one of the most interesting devices for its time. It boasted NVIDIA's own Tegra K1 chipset, an 8-inch screen, and front-facing stereo speakers. It was mostly aimed at gamers, but it could've been used as a decent entertainment device. Unlike the SHIELD Android TV box, NVIDIA ended its software support a long time ago with Android 7.0 Nougat, but the community is now picking up the work. I'm sure all of you have heard about LineageOS at some point. It is the most popular custom ROM which breathes new life into hundreds of end-of-life devices, just like the NVIDIA's SHIELD tablet.

While most of the world can easily buy an Exynos version of Samsung devices, those of us in the United States and Canada have to find a reseller. Many people prefer the Exynos version of Samsung's flagship smartphones because of how easy they allow the bootloader to be unlocked. This is normally where enthusiasts install TWRP and begin modding their device. Whether this means installing a custom ROM, kernel, gaining root access or more, having a device with an unlocked bootloader just makes most of this stuff easier. Those who have been wanting to try LineageOS 15.1 on their Exynos Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8+, or Samsung Galaxy Note 8 can now do so with an unofficial build from XDA Members Stricted and ivan_meler.

If you want to see all of the features you can get from LineageOS 15.1 you can, but it's a very long list. Some highlights are custom accent colors, a lock screen music visualizer, extreme power saver mode, screen-off gestures, and more. LineageOS 15.1 is based on Android Oreo and is still making its way to smartphones even now. The Honor 5X and 8 different Sony Xperia devices are next up to receive an official build of LineageOS 15.1, and you can download and install it on your smartphone today!

The Xiaomi brand is considered by many to be the "value king" of smartphones, especially in India, thanks to their incredibly competitive prices for decent mid-range and low-end devices. The Xiaomi Redmi series of devices, in particular, has shaken up the Indian smartphone market. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is one of the latest mid-rangers in the Redmi line that launched in India and Indonesia. It improves over the Redmi Note 5 Pro by improving on the camera software and reducing the bezel size with the introduction of a display notch. If you bought the device and aren't a fan of its stock MIUI software, then we have good news for you: the first custom ROMs and recoveries are already available.

If you've been an Android user for some time then you've probably heard about LineageOS. It is only the most popular custom ROM ever made. It was originated from CyanogenMod, which got canceled after some legal beef with Cyanogen, Inc. So, it was rebranded to LineageOS exactly 2 years ago. Ever since the team has made sure Android enthusiasts still get the latest and greatest experience on their older and unsupported devices. Today, they have shared some amazing statistics that are worth sharing.

Custom ROMs such as LineageOS help keep devices alive with new features and security updates. Sometimes support for these devices can continue for years. The OnePlus One is the biggest example as it is still the most active device on the websites statistics page. Sadly though, the LineageOS project has been built and carried by volunteer maintainers and we have just learned that a number of devices are no longer being officially supported due to inactive maintainers.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably familiar with the LineageOS custom ROM. After all, it is, quite possibly, the most widely used Android-based aftermarket software/custom ROM out there. LineageOS is the spiritual successor to the extinct CyanogenMod project, but despite similarities in their philosophy and the fact that LineageOS simply took off where CyanogenMod left off, there are still some stark differences. Particularly, CyanogenMod worked with nightly builds which were automatically compiled, whereas LineageOS builds were released in a weekly basis. This is changing today, though.

A lot of people within the Android community are currently on the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL hype train, but there have been a lot of great smartphones released this year. Heck, there are still more great smartphones scheduled to be released later this year as well. Whether or not you're a fan of Samsung, it's difficult to argue how good the Galaxy Note 9 is. It avoided the notch debacle, has a 3.5mm headphone port, comes with a stylus for those who like to jot things down, and now there is a pre-official version of LineageOS 15.1 available for the Exynos model.

The Mi Note series is simply a larger version of Xiaomi's Mi high-end smartphone but it has gotten rather popular as people are buying devices with bigger and bigger screens. The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 was released in September of 2017, comes with the Snapdragon 660 SoC, 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and has just received an official build of LineageOS 15.1 thanks to its maintainer, XDA Recognized Developer dianlujitao.

LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM for Android devices. It's often used as a base for other custom ROMs such as Resurrection Remix. There are other ROMs like OmniROM that are also popular and may or may not be based on LineageOS. Thanks to the efforts of the OpenKirin project, unofficial LineageOS, Resurrection Remix, and OmniROM builds are now available on the Honor 8, Honor Note 8, Huawei P9/Huawei P9 Plus, and Huawei Mate 8.

AOSP based versions of Android have a lot of fans. Pure Android is fast and has no additional applications or services that clutter the user experience. While we see a lot of Android Pie ROMs popping up lately, Android Oreo is still a new thing for some devices. The latest device that joined the Android Oreo family is Honor 5X, which has just received an unofficial port of LineageOS 15.1.

Android 9 Pie may be the latest Android version, but most Android phones aren't likely to receive an update to it anytime soon. The latest Android distribution statistics show that Android Oreo still has a long way to go before it becomes the most widely used Android version, while the Android Pie official update story still has a few months to go before it gains any momentum. In the absence of official updates, enthusiasts can turn towards unofficial Android Pie ports, which are available for a surprisingly broad variety of smartphones. At this point, however, most of these Android Pie ports are based on stock AOSP and don't contain many added features. LineageOS 16, based on Android 9 Pie, is still in development, although again, users can flash unofficial builds if they feel they can handle teething issues.

Both the BQ Aquaris X and BQ Aquaris X Pro have been out for quite a while but the company has been working to keep it as up to date as they can. While many would have hoped for an update to Android 9 Pie, BQ did push out an update to Android 8.1 Oreo to both the Aquaris X and the X Pro back in May of this year. So, while these two smartphones have had an official build of Android 8.1 for a while, fans of custom ROMs may be happy to hear that they are both supported by LineageOS now.

Project Treble has opened many doors in custom ROM development, including allowing obscure, no kernel source devices to run AOSP. All you need is to be able to unlock the bootloader and you can boot a GSI on it. That's exactly what we did with the Blackview A20 Android Go phone. We tried out LineageOS Go ported by XDA Recognised Developer phhusson, and the results are surprising. A device should work fine with Project Treble so long as it's certified, but there can always be some kinks to iron out.

Tablets don't get a lot of love in the development community. They aren't very popular in general, especially to average consumers. However, XDA Recognised Developer vince2678 is releasing an unofficial Android Oreo Go Edition build of LineageOS 15.1 for the Samsung Galaxy Tab E. That tablet came out in 2015 and isn't exactly the most powerful of devices, hence why it's getting an Android Oreo Go Edition build.

The Pixel smartphones now join the Motorola Moto Z2 Force and Xiaomi Mi A1 as the first batch of A/B smartphones that support the custom ROM. We expect other A/B devices like the Pixel 2 and OnePlus 6 to eventually receive support too (both already have unofficial builds and a growing developer community).

It's no secret that Xiaomi devices are some of the most popular on our forums. For pretty much every (Qualcomm Snapdragon) Xiaomi device released, there's always an abundance of custom ROMs that come out for it. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is no different and has now received an official build of LineageOS 15.1. Now's a good time to flash the ROM as doing it before you update your MIUI will allow you to downgrade your device afterward. If you want to download and install it, you can check out the link below.
