There is no dearth of custom ROM choices in the aftermarket development scene, but if there’s one that we could consider to be “the biggest” of them all, then that would be LineageOS. There are so many reasons why the LineageOS project is loved by the community, and it's not just for all the features that the custom ROM offers on top of vanilla AOSP. Thanks to the Device Support Requirements Charter, if you choose to flash an official build of LineageOS on a supported device, you can be rest assured that your device will be running stable software that is also kept up to date against serious security vulnerabilities — often well beyond the end of official manufacturer support. Now, the team is ready to move on to its next big milestone: LineageOS 18.1 is finally here with Android 11 as the base, as Nolen Johnson (npjohnson) announces in the official blogpost.

The smartphone industry is known for being fast-paced, with new devices coming out one after the other. With all the rapid releases and the shiny new hardware, people often forget that devices that have already been launched do not necessarily become unusable just because their successors have been released. Regarding the obvious lack of official software updates in the long run, we are constantly impressed by some of the feats pulled off by third-party developers in our forums. While Android 11 is the latest Android dessert, Android 10 is still a new thing for some legacy devices. The latest device that joined the Android 10 family is Honor 5X, which has just received an unofficial port of LineageOS 17.1.

LineageOS can easily be titled the holy grail of custom ROMs. Throughout the year, we have seen the list of officially supported LineageOS 17.1 devices grow. Moreover, many developers take advantage of the open-source nature of the project and unofficially bring the goodness of vanilla Android with LineageOS specific tweaks to various devices from different manufacturers. The ASUS ROG Phone 3 and the Nubia Red Magic 5G are among the latest devices to get unofficial LineageOS 17.1 on top of Android 10.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup is powered by the company’s Exynos 990 chip in all regions, except in a few countries like the US where the device packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. The US Snapdragon model is traditionally impossible to bootloader-unlock, so most of the aftermarket developments are centered around the Exynos variant. This year, however, it appears that you can unofficially unlock the bootloader of a handful of Snapdragon Samsung Galaxy devices. In fact, we now have confirmation that AOSP-based custom ROMs such as LineageOS can run on the Snapdragon Galaxy S20.

London-based startup F(x)tec launched the Pro1 back in September last year. At launch, the device ran a near-stock version of Android 9.0 Pie with just a couple of additional apps that had been optimized to work with its physical keyboard. But the company had also sent devices to developers from LineageOS and SailfishOS to speed up third-party development for the device. As a result, the device received official LineageOS 16 support earlier this year in July. And now, the LineageOS team has officially extended LineageOS 17.1 support for the F(x)tec Pro1.

Towards the end of last month, NVIDIA rolled out SHIELD Software Experience 8.2 with several improvements for its SHIELD TV lineup of devices. The update introduced enhancements for the AI upscaler feature on the 2019 SHIELD TVs and new customization options for the SHIELD remote's menu button, along with improved IR and CEC volume control support. But while the update brings a couple of new features to NVIDIA's Android TV boxes, it's still based on the older Android 9 Pie release. Thankfully, XDA Recognized Developer Steel01 has now released an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 based on Android 10 for the NVIDIA SHIELD TV lineup, if you're hoping to try a newer OS version.

Samsung is among the small handful of Android OEMs still betting on the tablet segment. The Korean OEM announced a mid-range tablet – the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite – back in April this year, which also made its way to India after a few months. For a budget-friendly tablet that also supports Samsung’s S Pen, the device offers some solid specifications, such as the Exynos 9611 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage accompanied by a microSD slot for expansion, a 10.4″ WUXGA+ TFT LCD display, and dual AKG-tuned speakers with Dolby Audio. And if you’re the type of person who loves to mod their gadgets, then you’ll be pleased with the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, as the device has now received both an unofficial TWRP build as well as a pretty stable build of LineageOS 17.1.

Samsung entered the affordable flagship segment earlier this year with the launch of the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. Since the launch, Samsung has regularly pushed software updates for both the devices, with the Galaxy S10 Lite receiving the company's latest One UI 2.5 update earlier this month. But while Samsung is doing a great job of pushing software updates for the device, the company's One UI Android skin isn't everyone's cup of tea. If you're one of the many Galaxy S10 Lite users who aren't satisfied with Samsung's software, you'd be glad to know that you can now install LineageOS 17.1 on the device.

Earlier this year in April, Motorola released Android 10 kernel sources for the Motorola One Vision and One Action. While we expected the kernel source code release to jump-start third-party development for the devices, so far, we haven't seen much progress. Even though both the devices have received official TWRP support since the kernel source code release, we haven't seen many custom ROMs on our Motorola One Vision and One Action forums. That changes today, as XDA Recognized Developer Stricted has now released an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 for the devices.

Not every Android smartphone is eligible to get 3 years of OS and security updates from their makers, but that doesn't mean you have to abandon them after the official support ends. XDA's huge aftermarket development community is undoubtedly the primary driving force behind the custom ROM scene, which is enough to breathe new life into devices that are not being updated by the respective OEMs anymore. The ever-popular LineageOS custom ROM already has a pretty large roster of officially supported devices, while developers frequently use its open source codebase as the foundation for porting newer versions of Android to legacy devices. Now, you can add the Samsung Galaxy A10, the Motorola Moto G5S and a bunch of 2013's Sony Xperia phones to the list of devices unofficially supported by Android 10-based LineageOS 17.1.
