[Update: Available again] Huawei devices can no longer download VLC from Play Store because of EMUI's aggressive background restrictions
A number of recent Huawei devices can no longer download VLC from the Google Play Store, thanks to EMUI's aggressive background restrictions.
Huawei's reputation with developers is going from bad to worse thanks to VLC player. Because of EMUI's aggressive background restrictions, VLC would randomly stop playing audio when in the background. As a result, the developers have blacklisted numerous Huawei devices from installing it from the Google Play Store. This is thanks to the application receiving many 1-star reviews from device owners who did not know it was caused by their phone. You can still sideload the APK from their website just fine, however. You just can't see it on the Google Play Store.
Nova is an open-source video player for phones, tablets, and Android TV
Nova is an open source video player for smartphones, tablets, and Android TV that is actually based on the source code of Archos Video Player.

I remember this being such a hassle on the desktop PC until VLC came around, and now most of the people in the know either use it or MPC-HC. Then people began watching more content on their smartphones, and again, it led to a huge search for the go-to application to use. For a long time, this ended up being an application called MX Player, which has been downloaded by over 500 million users. As people have begun to move away from MX Player, a new open-source video player has emerged and it is being called Nova.
