Intel's process roadmap to 2025: Intel 7, 4, 3, 20A, and 18A explained

Intel has outlined its new processes for the next few years, but what does it all mean?

By

Intel unveiled its Meteor Lake laptop processors alongside a Raptor Lake Refresh last year, and with it came a renewed commitment to the company's process node roadmap that it first published in 2021. In that roadmap, the company states that it wants to clear five nodes in four years, something that no other company has achieved in years. Intel's own roadmap states that it aims to achieve "process leadership" in 2025. Process leadership, by Intel's standards, is the highest performance per watt. What does the journey to the best CPU look like?

There have been high expectations for Intel’s Meteor Lake as the successor of Raptor Lake. The company has been presumably doing what it can to make the most of its new CPU layout, which consists of what it’s calling chiplets — pieces of silicon that come together to deliver the functionality of a whole processor. Intel is also seemingly trying to make amends for its attempt to capitalize quickly on its 10nm node. Rather than trying to roll out several advancements in a short period of time, the company has debuted a more thought-out manufacturing roadmap for the remainder of the year. Now, Intel has released a series of Linux patches to make sure it doesn’t speed past improvements that need to be made.

CES is the biggest computing show of the year, and it's a longstanding tradition that Intel and AMD announce their newest wares there, followed by every OEM's device announcements. Normally, these new chips and devices are a little bit faster than their predecessors, and those improvements add up over a five-year upgrade cycle.

At this year's CES, Intel has rolled out the remainder of its 14th Gen processors for desktop, introducing 18 new processors across a multitude of price ranges all based on Raptor Lake Refresh. On top of that, Intel's 14th Gen HX series for laptops is here for gamers, professionals, and creatives, led by the Intel Core i9-14900HX. Finally, Intel is also launching the Intel Core U Processor Series 1, an efficient, balanced performance option for portable devices.

There has been growing speculation surrounding Intel's future Meteor Lake CPUs ever since details were revealed at its Innovation event. However, attention has now been diverted to a different chip that has also been part of the rumor mill. A new image posted on social media suggests that the rumored i9-14900KS chip might be more than just a concept — if the leak is to be believed. In turn, it could mean that Intel is gearing up to launch a CPU with a 6.2GHz clock speed right out of the box.

While the name might sound like a mouthful, the new MSI Prestige 16 AI Evo is a really powerful productivity laptop. Coming with Intel's new Core Ultra CPUs, code-named Meteor Lake, under the hood, it is really different from any other non-gaming MSI laptop that I've ever used before. This device is also one of the few that started shipping right when Intel launched that CPU line on December 14.

It might be the end of the year, but Intel is getting a head start on 2024 and CES by launching its much-anticipated Meteor Lake laptop CPUs today. Carrying the new "Core Ultra" branding, these laptop chips are quite different from anything the company has released before. Built on 4nm technology, sporting an NPU for AI technologies, and also improved integrated Arc graphics, there's a lot of promise.

Intel has formally unveiled its Core Ultra series processors, the next generation of its laptop processors to follow up the 13th-generation lineup that was available throughout 2023. The first Intel Core Ultra processors are based on the Meteor Lake architecture, which Intel introduced a few months ago, and there are a ton of improvements in tow.

A mini PC isn’t suitable in all situations, but it can be valuable if you’re looking to resolve specific issues. For instance, it might be exactly what you need if you want a PC exclusively for streaming purposes. It can also be beneficial if you’re looking to replace a large desktop with a smaller alternative, and you don’t want to compromise on features. Now, Mechrevo is planning to launch such a product in the first half of 2024, and it’s turning to Intel for its chip.

4 reasons 2024 will be an exciting year for PCs

2023 may have been a slow year for laptops, but things are looking way up for 2024 thanks largely to brand new hardware

Just a few days ago, I wrote about how 2023 was a pretty boring year for laptops, with most options keeping the same designs as last year while offering iterative performance upgrades. But things are set to be very different in 2024. With brand-new laptop designs, potentially revolutionary processors, and a big Windows update, it looks like it could be one of the best years for laptops in quite some time. Here are a few reasons I'm very excited about what's coming next year.

With its Meteor Lake lineup, Intel is moving away from its long-standing 'Core i3/i5/i7/i9' branding to a simpler 'Core 3/5/7/9' nomenclature for mainstream chips and 'Core Ultra' for high-end SKUs. The first batch of Meteor Lake-powered laptops are slated to be released this December, and some of them were recently spotted online, thanks to a Bulgarian retailer seemingly jumping the gun. Now online retailers in the U.S. have started listing Meteor Lake laptops, revealing some of their key specifications and possible prices.

Following the launch of its Raptor Lake Refresh desktop processors earlier this month, Intel is expected to unveil its Meteor Lake mobile CPUs later this year. Multiple leaks in recent weeks have already revealed quite a bit about the upcoming chips, and Intel itself has officially confirmed that premium SKUs in the new lineup will use the 'Core Ultra' branding, ditching the current 'Core i' naming scheme it has been using for over a decade.

Intel's focus on AI in Meteor Lake may breathe new life into the industry

Intel might be about to kickstart a new era

Recently, Intel took the industry by storm with its next-gen Meteor Lake platform thanks to its chiplet-based tiles design and dedicated NPU devoted to AI-based applications. Along with the numerous advantages of adopting a chiplet-based and the expected performance and efficiency gains, Meteor Lake promises to be far more than just another generation upgrade. In fact, one could argue that Intel could be about to usher in a whole new era of computing, breathing new life into the PC industry that has been in a period of stagnation for some time, and AI is at the heart of it.

Intel's new 14th-generation Core processors are finally available for purchase, and while these processors are largely a refresh of Intel's 13th-generation "Raptor Lake" series of processors, the Core i7-14700k is the only processor in the lineup that gets any additional cores added. The Core i7-14700K is the most interesting of the 14th-gen processors with four additional E-cores than the last generation, but how does it perform against the last-generation Core i7-13700K? If you are looking to build a capable gaming machine with Team Blue, it's worth taking a look at these two processors and going with whichever is the better value for you. Let's put the Intel Core i7-14700K and the Intel Core i7-13700K head-to-head, and see which comes out on top.
