Access powerful workstations in the cloud through Microsoft Dev Box, now generally available

Microsoft Dev Box offers cloud-powered workstations with up to 32 vCPU, 128GB RAM, and 2TB of storage for $629/month.

Although Microsoft already offers Windows PCs powered by the cloud through multiple solutions including Windows 365, these workstations do not usually cater to specialized use-cases and have long deployment times. One scenario that Microsoft felt that it had been missing for several years is offering powerful cloud-based workstations to developers, pre-configured and ready for building applications. To tackle this problem, the Redmond tech firm announced Microsoft Dev Box in May 2022, and now, the solution is generally available.

European Union flags with building in the background.
Microsoft, Amazon, and Google may be forced to work with EU firms to handle sensitive European data on the cloud

AWS, Azure, GCP, and other cloud service providers may soon require an EU cybersecurity label to handle sensitive data.

Cloud service providers (CSPs) such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft could be facing new regulatory challenges in the European Union (EU) as the region is reportedly working on a draft rule that will force non-European CSPs to join hands with European firms if they want to handle sensitive data on the cloud. An EU cybersecurity label will be issued to CSPs if they plan to handle sensitive data, and it will be contingent on the requirement that a joint venture is formed between a non-European cloud provider and an EU firm, with the latter having a majority stake in this partnership.

Microsoft says it mitigated a 2.4 Tbps DDoS attack, one of the largest DDoS attacks ever recorded

Microsoft says that it mitigated a 2.4 Tbps distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on its Azure network in August. DDoS attacks are usually a tool used to take down websites or systems, often flooding them with traffic that the server can't handle. This was significantly higher than an attack on the Azure network in 2020 that reached peak traffic speeds of 1 Tbps. This 2.4 Tbps attack is higher than any network volumetric event previously detected on Azure.

Google competes with Microsoft in a number of fields. While the Seattle-based tech company doesn't have a mobile OS in the works anymore, they still go head to head against Google in areas such as web search, online maps, cloud computing, AI, programming languages, operating systems, and more. Since Microsoft has dropped its goal of competing in the mobile phone space the company has brought a number of its services to iOS and Android. The latest announcement from the company tells us that mobile developers now have access to an Android SDK for their Azure Maps service.

Building a custom ROM can take a long time if you don't have high-end hardware and it can take even longer if your bandwidth is limited and/or very low speed. Thankfully though, there are a number of cloud computing platforms available and Microsoft Azure is one of the most popular options. So XDA Senior Member Albe96 has put together a detailed step by step guide on how to use a Microsoft Azure server to build your own custom ROM in the cloud. It'll also give you a general idea of the service in case you have other uses for it too!
