3 things I want to see from Microsoft's new Paint NPU app

Paint NPU is on the way, but we're still unsure what it will do.

Have you heard about the new Paint NPU app? If you haven't, it's a planned revamp of the traditional Paint app on Windows that emphasizes the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on AI PCs. NPUs are like CPUs and GPUs, except they're wholly dedicated to AI processes; as such, from the name of the app, you can put two and two together and deduce that Paint NPU will feature generative AI in some way.

With computers now coming with built-in NPUs, Microsoft is keen to put them to work. For a while now, we've been hearing rumors that Microsoft is revamping Windows to have a heavy AI focus, which would make having an NPU handy. And now, there are whispers that Microsoft is going to reveal one of its first AI-powered tools...and it's Paint.

Microsoft has been stepping up its AI game in recent weeks. It has only just implemented Copilot within Windows 10 and then confirmed that the Copilot AI assistant will eventually run on GPT-4 Turbo. Now, Windows 11 users can generate DALL-E 3 AI-generated art within Microsoft Paint without any third-party tools.

Windows 11 brought with it a ton of changes, not only with the initial release, but with subsequent updates like version 22H2 and, most recently, version 23H2. One of the big changes we saw at the Start was a modernized Paint app. At first, this was only a fresh look, but Microsoft has added a few notable features in recent updates, including background removal and support for layers. Let's take a closer look at Paint in Windows 11.

Microsoft is rolling out a new AI-infused version of the Windows 11 Paint app to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channel. The newest version of the app, coming in at version 11.2309.20.0 or higher sports a new feature dubbed Paint Cocreator, which Microsoft first talked about during its September 21 special event in New York. With the feature, you can generate artwork right inside Microsoft Paint without ever leaving the app.

Last month, Microsoft showed off a new Paint app for Windows 11. It was one of many apps that were teased - including Snipping Tool, Photos, and more - but for a while, Paint was missing in action. Now, it's finally rolling out to Windows Insiders on the Dev channel.

Microsoft is finally putting MS Paint in the Microsoft Store — nearly four years after trying to replace the app with Paint 3D. The change is part of the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview, which also makes its Snipping Tool updatable via the Microsoft Store.

Windows 10 fresh installations to no longer include Paint 3D and 3D Viewer

Microsoft is removing Paint 3D and 3D Viewer apps from Windows installations starting with the latest Insider Preview.

Microsoft has taken the decision to no longer include Paint 3D and 3D Viewer apps on new Windows 10 installations. This change comes right after the 3D Objects folder in the My PC section was hidden by default in an Insider build released on February 24, 2021. Paint 3D and 3D Viewer were introduced by Microsoft in the 2017 Windows 10 Creators Update, two years after the official release of Windows 10. However, both the apps are not very popular, which is possibly the reason why they are no longer included by default.
