Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 7 Pro in India back in February 2019 with some solid specifications, such as a capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC, a 4,000 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support, and a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor as the primary rear camera. The factory-installed operating system on the phone was MIUI 10 on top of Android 9 Pie, but the OEM decided to keep the underlying Android layer intact in the subsequent MIUI 11 update. And now, Xiaomi has finally brought over the Android 10 update to the Redmi Note 7 Pro on the stable channel.

The Xiaomi Redmi 8 was one of the best selling devices of Q1 2020, sharing the dais with the Samsung Galaxy A51. This budget device with the Snapdragon 439 SoC was launched back in October 2019 as part of Xiaomi's entry-level lineup. Before this, Xiaomi had launched the Redmi 8A in September 2019, bringing over the Snapdragon 439 in an even basic form factor and more affordable price tag. While Android 10 has been around for months now, Xiaomi has finally brought over Android 10 to these budget devices with new MIUI 11 builds.

Launched back in 2019, Xiaomi's Redmi Note 7 brought 48MP camera to the masses. The company decided to use a different camera sensor on the Indian variant, but they quickly phased out the initial model in favor of the Redmi Note 7S with a 48 MP primary rear camera. There is virtually no difference between the regular Redmi Note 7 and the Note 7S except the camera. Both models share a common code-name ("lavender"), thus their firmware packages are identical as well.

The Redmi A series is intended for the entry-level Android smartphone market, and the lineup truly offers the best bang for the buck. They can easily outperform the Android Go-powered phones from the same budget segment, thanks to the better hardware configuration. In terms of software updates, Xiaomi usually delivers one major Android version update to these phones, albeit the MIUI layer is refreshed more than once before EOL. Staying true to its reputation, the company has now rolled out the Android 10 update for the Redmi 7A.

The most frequently used word to describe Xiaomi products is "affordable." In every category, Xiaomi's products are typically available at a lower price than competitors. Thus, a premium Xiaomi smartphone that seeks to compete with flagships from Samsung, Huawei, or Apple seems strange to users who see Xiaomi as the ultimate cost-effective "value" brand. Xiaomi has tried to overturn this expectation by launching premium smartphones such as the Mi MIX series or the Mi-branded flagships in markets like Europe, and they have gained some traction in changing perceptions. In heavily price-conscious markets like India, though, Xiaomi has slowly shifted its strategy after earlier attempts at flagship launches failed. Its last true flagship launch in India was the Mi MIX 2, which launched in 2017, and its successor, the Mi MIX 3, wasn't even released in the region due to Xiaomi's recognition as the "affordable smartphone brand." Instead, Xiaomi focused on the segment of sub-premium smartphones such as the POCO F1 and its spiritual successor, the Redmi K20 Pro. But ahead of Xiaomi lays both the challenge to transform its image from a budget brand to a premium one and the opportunity to enter a segment where the return on investment is much higher. That's where Xiaomi's latest flagship, the Xiaomi Mi 10, comes in. The Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro are Xiaomi's priciest Mi devices yet, and with this launch, Xiaomi is treading close to the segment of actual premium smartphones.

Xiaomi has traditionally been associated with smartphones that offer the best bang for the buck. While Xiaomi has a massive portfolio of products – from smartphones to dumb feature phones, laptops, smart TVs, IoT products, and even STEM toys. Each of these products is priced as economically possible and this has lent Xiaomi and brands under or backed by it (like Redmi and POCO) a persona of affordability. However, the company has also been producing flagship products, which lie between true flagships and flagship killers. To mark its 10th anniversary, Xiaomi introduced the Mi 10 and the Mi 10 Pro earlier this year in China, followed by its launch in the European markets. Today, Xiaomi is bringing the Mi 10 5G – but without the Pro – to India after several years of focus on the mid-range in the country.

Xiaomi has been at the forefront of the smartphone revolution in India. The affordable offerings under the Redmi branding have helped Xiaomi establish a strong base in India and surpass established players like Samsung to become the leading phone brand in the country. While Xiaomi announced Mi-series flagships such as the Mi 5 and the Mi MIX 2 in the past, the company has primarily focussed on Redmi because it is oriented with the demands of this price-sensitive market. But after testing the waters with its flagship killer - Redmi K20 Pro (review) last year, Xiaomi will reintroduce the Mi-branded flagship lineup in India. While the original plan was to launch the Xiaomi Mi 10 5G in India at the end of March, it was delayed by the nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19.

Xiaomi is already working on MIUI 12, and very likely on Android 11 too. However, the version number of Xiaomi's MIUI skin doesn't have a 1:1 correspondence with the underlying Android layer. For example, a bunch of phones from the Chinese OEM has recently picked up the Android 10 update under the same MIUI 11 skin they had before. Two more devices are now eligible for the stable Android 10 OTA – the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 8 Lite.

The initial batch of MIUI 11 update for several Xiaomi and Redmi phones went live during Q4 2019. However, the underlying software was still based on older versions of Android in most of the cases. The company eventually published the kernel sources of the Android 10 update for the Mi Mix 2s, Mi Mix 3, POCO F1, and the Mi 8 series late last year, while the actual builds have been greenlit for broad scale rollout after a few months. Following the footsteps of the POCO F1 and the Mi Mix 3, the Mi 8 series has now received stable MIUI 11 based on Android 10. Mid-rangers from the Mi 9 series, i.e. the Mi 9 SE and the Mi 9 Lite, are also getting the same treatment.

Xiaomi's MIUI beta ROMs play a vital role in letting the company prioritize the development of new features. Based on the feedback from beta testers, the MIUI team can choose which features will align more with user requirements than others and, therefore, require more efforts for development and evolution. Not only that, MIUI betas also give us hints about the features that may or may not make to final successive versions of the UI. Every year, the company splits efforts between betas and the next incremental update but this year seems different. With the objective of now focussing on MIUI 12, Xiaomi is halting the development of MIUI 11 China beta.

There are a handful of established players in the smartphone market; and thanks to how releases have worked out in the past, we have now fallen into a predictable pattern of releases. Every year few months, these established players release another iteration in their successful product lines, cashing in rightfully on the hard-earned goodwill from those lines. So when we hear about Xiaomi working on the Redmi Note 9, we aren't really surprised. But when we hear about Xiaomi working on a Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition and Redmi 10X, we do take notice.

The stable version of MIUI 11 for the Mi Mix 3 landed in the beginning of November, but the underlying Android version was still based on Android 9 Pie. Xiaomi dropped a hint about the upcoming OS upgrade when they published the kernel source code of the Android 10 update for the Mi Mix 3, alongside the POCO F1, Mi Mix 2s, and the Mi 8 series in December. The wait is finally over, as Xiaomi has now started rolling out Android 10 for the Mi Mix 3 in the form of MIUI 11.0.3.0 via the stable channel.

MIUI 11 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so an MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. MIUI 11 was announced in China in September 2019, bringing along new features such as animated AOD and Horizon Light for supported devices, new font, dynamic sound system, Mi Work and Mi Go app suites, and more changes. The first batch of MIUI 11 Betas was available for a bunch of devices, and over the next few weeks, devices like the Redmi K20 have begun receiving their stable MIUI 11 updates. Now, Xiaomi has officially confirmed that stable MIUI 11 update is rolling out to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi 7, Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Poco F1.

Xiaomi introduced a new sky replacement feature in the MIUI 11 Gallery app back in May last year. As the name suggests, the feature allowed users to replace the sky in any of their images with a different sky present on the app. The feature included a number of different presets that could give your photos a completely different look and make them seem like that they were clicked in completely different weather conditions. Then, earlier this month, we learned that Xiaomi had added a new video editor to the MIUI 11 Gallery app on its flagship Mi 10, which included a boatload of features to help users edit their videos. Now, it seems like Xiaomi has combined these two features and will be introducing new weather effect filters for videos in the MIUI Gallery app.

The Mi A3 and the Redmi Note 8 Pro are amongst Xiaomi's highlight devices for 2019. While the Redmi Note 8 Pro carries Xiaomi's mid-range portfolio on its shoulders, the Mi A3 takes charge of Android One duties, giving users an option to officially use Google's Android instead of MIUI on a Xiaomi device. Despite their importance in Xiaomi's lineup, the devices have oddly lacked behind when it comes to Android 10 updates. But now, the wait is finally over, as both, the Xiaomi Mi A3 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro are now finally receiving their official Android 10 updates.

Xiaomi is among the companies that have, over the years, changed the definition of "flagship" by vending great devices at incredible prices. As Xiaomi progresses towards completing ten years in the industry, it aims to project a more premium persona with the future releases. Alongside the follow-up to the Mi 9 series, Xiaomi has launched a Pro model today in China. The new devices are equipped with features like Snapdragon 865, 108MP camera, up to 50W charging, and more. We're thrilled to learn that the Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro will be coming to markets other than China – including India, Indonesia, Russia, and EEA (European Economic Area) at the very least.

With our phones becoming somewhat of a crutch in our every-day lives, there's a lot of potential abuse that can take place through someone's smartphone. That's why we've seen a massive overhaul in the permissions system with the launch of Android 10, which allows you to only grant temporary GPS access to apps when they're open, for example. Permissions have also been made much more granular. Still, the system isn't perfect, and MIUI 11 is introducing a new security feature to warn you when an app is using sensitive permissions. MIUI 11 has just recently rolled out to a number of Xiaomi devices, and you can check out which devices and how to install it here.

Xiaomi's Pocophone F1, also known as the POCO F1 in India, was met by an incredible amount of enthusiasm from smartphone enthusiasts after its launch. But its launch was followed by a period of somber silence from Xiaomi and desperation of those expecting to buy an upgraded POCO smartphone. There was even a time when people speculated that the Redmi K20 Pro would be the spiritual successor to the POCO F1 – and when that expectation was squashed by Xiaomi, we held out for the POCO F2. After much speculation and waiting for a successor, POCO finally announced it was spinning back into action by launching its first device as an independent brand. The company has now launched the POCO X2 – a device that seems to be an open challenge to Realme which also launched its namesake sub-flagship device. However, the POCO X2 phone is not what you might expect as a POCO F1 follow-up.
