Samsung Motion Photo is a feature available on Samsung flagships that captures a few seconds of action leading up to the pressing of the shutter button. The result is a short video-like photo which adds some context and fun to an otherwise standard image. Motion Photo is available on several Samsung flagships, and similar features are also available across other product ecosystems. But despite its availability as a feature, these photos did not "play" within the Google Photos app. Now, users are reporting that the Google Photos Android app, as well as the website, shows the motion within these photos.

HMD Global has released a massive update for the Nokia Camera application (version 90.0.1123.20), which should run on nearly all of their devices to date. It brings many new features such as Google Lens, Motion Photos, and an all-new UI as well. It comes in at 247MB and according to Beebom, works on the Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco. The Nokia 6.1 apparently displays an incompatibility error, while the Nokia 6.1 Plus actually comes with this new camera application pre-installed.

Many years ago, Sony released an application called Motion Shot that captured some video before and after a photo was taken. Apple then launched Live Photos with the iPhone 6S in 2015. It received so much positive feedback that Google decided to jump on board. Google launched the Motion Stills application for iOS to help stabilize those Live Photos. They then built their own Google Photos feature called Motion Photos for the Pixel 2 and brought the Motion Stills app to Android. The company has been evolving this feature ever since and we now finally have the ability to export Motion Photos as GIFs.

The unofficial Google Camera HDR+ has proven popular for non-Pixel devices, as it improves image quality in many cases. However, it's worth noting that HDR+ wasn't actually launched with the Google Pixel - instead, it's been a mainstay of Google Camera ever since the release of the Nexus 5 in 2013. The major change with the Pixel was ZSL (Zero Shutter Lag) mode, which solved the major problem of HDR+: the speed. It made it possible to take photos quickly one after the other, without the camera UI freezing, and therefore it made HDR+ usable even for fast-moving subjects.

Google-branded smartphones weren't always known for their stellar camera quality. The Google Nexus smartphone series featured generally average picture-taking quality (though the Nexus 6P was a step above the rest). It wasn't until the company started to take a more hardware-centric focus with the Google Pixel line-up that their smartphones' camera quality would noticeably improve. Part of what makes the Pixel smartphones excel at taking photos is the Google Camera app with Google's HDR+ technology. It's a great way to take beautiful pictures without learning how to edit RAW images. Google wants to give users more options to capture the precious moments in their lives, so they've added a few new features to the Google Camera app in the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL: Motion Photo, Face Retouching, and Portrait Mode among others.
