The GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) mandates every Android device manufacturer to publicly release the part of Linux kernel code that they have shipped on their devices. An ideal kernel source release should be accompanied by appropriate commit history, and all the dependencies are expected to be properly documented. While we don’t expect every company to maintain such a high standard, there are a few OEMs who regularly publish the source code for all the software revisions they roll out. We are happy to report that a couple of new devices now have had their kernel sources released, namely the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Redmi K40 Pro. Motorola has also updated its official GitHub repository with the kernel source code release for the Motorola Edge S and several other smartphones. The OnePlus Nord grabbed our attention as well, for which OnePlus has published kernel sources corresponding to the phone's stable Android 11 update.

And about a month ago, Motorola had announced an even more affordable 5G-enabled smartphone in the form of the Moto G 5G Plus. Now, Motorola is bringing over this smartphone to the USA in the form of the Motorola One 5G.

Access to the kernel sources gives power users a chance to dive deeper into the code that runs the corresponding Android-powered device. Besides improving the overall performance, tweaking such sources allow the modding community to add new capabilities that are otherwise not offered in the stock configuration. Kernel source releases also help developers to port popular custom ROMs (e.g. LineageOS) for the device which, in turn, benefit users who aren’t satisfied with the stock ROM. Most Android OEMs nowadays release the sources within a short period of their devices hitting the market, fulfilling their legal obligation of the General Public License v2. Manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola have a particularly good track record of releasing these sources and we now have another example of their diligence. The kernel sources for the recently released Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 series as well as a bunch of Motorola phones are now up for grabs.
