[Update: US Unlocked] Moto G6 and G6 Play are getting the Android Pie update, starting in Brazil

The Motorola Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play are finally getting their stable Android Pie updates. The Android 9 update is rolling out first in Brazil.

After the stable update for the Moto G6 Plus rolled out last month, it's now time for the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play to get a taste of pie. Soak tests for the aforementioned update have been ongoing in Brazil for nearly a month now, but the update has been deemed stable enough to roll out to more users. According to AndroidPit, the stable Android Pie update is rolling out for Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play users in Brazil. The update comes with December 2018 security patches and Android Pie features like the partial dark theme, horizontally aligned recent app cards, a gesture to mute the phone when pressing the volume up and power button, and other minor tweaks. Motorola doesn't heavily customize Android as some other manufacturers do, so it's not too surprising to see that their Android 9 Pie update doesn't visually change much over the Android 8.1 Oreo release.

Motorola might not be the first in line to bring the latest tricks to its official Camera app, but it has been committed to bringing these features well in time. The company recently updated the Moto Camera app with quirks like selfie portrait, spot color isolation, and watermarks. Now, it has a new update which brings Playmoji-style AR stickers through Google Lens integration, a leveler UI, live filters, and more.

While the Motorola Moto G7 series is just around the corner, Motorola has not forgotten the Moto G6 when it comes to updates (which is surprising because Lenovo hasn't been the best when it comes to updating older phones). As it appears, the Motorola Moto G6 is getting an Android Pie soak test.

Smartphone OEMs generally go through a number of phases before a new update is considered 'stable' and gets rolled out to the public. We have spoken about private beta tests from OnePlus and there are some who do public beta tests like Google. Each has their own pros and cons and some companies even have multiple channels (such as OnePlus having closed and open beta tracks). It all just depends on how much progress the update has gone through. Motorola has a history of doing soak tests (which are essentially private beta tests that you sign up for and hope to get selected) in Brazil and it just so happens an Android Pie soak test beta for the Motorola Moto G6 has been leaked online.

The Motorola Moto Z2 Play is one of Motorola's older flagships, and as such may see a delay in receiving the latest Moto app updates. The company's latest devices, such as the Motorola Moto G6 and the Motorola Moto Z3 Play, all have the latest Moto apps. The new versions of these apps offer new features and better stability but sadly aren't available for the Moto Z2 Play. Thanks to the work of XDA Senior Member Junior Passos, you can install the newer versions of the Moto applications on your device now. All you need is TWRP to flash the ZIP. The applications (and new features!) included in the ZIP are listed below.

How A/B Partitions and Seamless Updates Affect Custom Development on XDA

You may have heard of Seamless Updates before. It involves something called "A/B partitions." What is it and how does it affect custom development on XDA?

When Android Nougat released, it had us talking about all kinds of new features. We got a newly updated user interface for starters along with long-awaited multiwindow capabilities and Vulkan Graphics API support. But one under-the-hood addition flew over the heads of most users. Android Nougat introduced "Seamless Updates" on devices that support A/B partitions. The vast majority of existing Android devices (excluding the new Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL) did not have A/B partitions at the time and thus couldn't take advantage of seamless updates. The basic premise of this feature is that the device has a second set of the system, boot, vendor, and other important partitions, and when you get an OTA update the update happens in the background while the second set of partitions are patched which lets you reboot into an updated software build seamlessly. If an update fails, you'll be kicked back to a working build, meaning companies will have fewer headaches to deal with and consumers are better protected.

Motorola, the Chicago-based subsidiary of Lenovo, stumbled upon a winning strategy with the Moto E and Moto G series. The mid-to-low-tier smartphones remain incredibly popular in developing markets such as India, where the company has shipped more than six million units to date. But they're also a top seller in the U.S., where they're subsidized by prepaid carriers and retailers such as Amazon (for example, as part of Prime Exclusive Smartphones). In a sense, Motorola's merely keeping the wheels in motion with the Moto G6, Moto G6 Play, Moto G6 Plus, Moto E5 Plus, and Moto E5 Play, its 2018 lineup of wallet-friendly devices.
