Different smartphone OEMs go by their own schedule when it comes to Android updates. Motorola, for example, prefers to conduct limited invitation-based public beta testing (commonly referred to as "soak testing") before the actual release of a major Android version update through the stable channel. The final beta firmware is often mature enough to be considered as the stable build, which means the soak testing phase is a pretty good indicator of the arrival of the stable update. Now, the Motorola One Zoom (also known as the Motorola One Pro) and the Moto G8 Plus have started receiving such soak test builds of Android 10.

Motorola Moto G8 Plus, Nubia Mini 5G, and Realme 1/U1 Android Pie kernel sources are now available

Kernel sources for the Motorola Moto G8 Plus, Nubia Mini 5G, and the Realme 1/U1's Android Pie builds are now available for download.

Publishing the kernel source of an Android-powered smartphone is needed for the OEM to comply with the GNU General Public License v2, and it also helps third-party developers to build custom recoveries and ROMs for that device. An ideal kernel source release should be accompanied by appropriate commit history, and all the dependencies are expected to be properly documented. While we don't expect every OEM to maintain such high-quality control, even a partial release should be enough for experienced developers to get the ball rolling. Manufacturers like Motorola and Nubia have a good track record of releasing kernel sources and they have now posted kernel sources for the Moto G8 Plus and the Nubia Mini 5G, respectively. Realme, on the other hand, has released a revised kernel source package targeting the Realme 1 and the Realme U1.

Google’s ARCore (now Google Play Services for AR) is an SDK that allows developers to add augmented reality features to apps. While it doesn’t require any specialized hardware, Google still has to work with OEMs to create custom calibration profiles for each device. Since each device has a different camera and sensor setup, getting the calibration correct is crucial for the AR features to work properly. Google regularly keeps expanding the list as more and more devices receive support, and since our last coverage, many more devices have gained official support for ARCore.

The Moto G series was launched back in 2013 and six years in, the series is now entering its 8th generation. The original Moto G was avant-garde in the realm of affordable smartphones, but the last few generations of Moto G phones have failed to live up to that prestige. The newly launched Moto G8 Plus is here to remind us that the company still knows the craft of building great phones with competitive hardware and aggressive pricing. Succeeding the Moto G7 Plus that launched in February of this year, the Moto G8 Plus brings refreshed internals, three cameras, stereo speakers, and a sizeable battery. I’ve been using the device for the past two days and here are my first impressions.

Motorola is preparing to launch the next phone in its Motorola One lineup, the Motorola One Zoom/One Pro. However, we know the company is actively developing at least two additional smartphones: the Moto G8 Play and an unnamed, notch-less smartphone. We've been tracking the development of the Moto G8 smartphone series, and while we can't confirm if the unnamed smartphone is in the Moto G lineup, we have obtained specifications for one of the higher-end devices in the next Moto G series. A reliable source shared specifications for a Moto G smartphone that could be either the Moto G8 or the Moto G8 Plus, but we won't know which device it'll be until we get closer to launch. Nevertheless, here's what we uncovered so far.
