Google's Pixel smartphones come with features that you can't get anywhere else, and a personal favorite of mine is the company's "Now Playing" feature. It will identify music playing around you by comparing audio to a database stored on device, providing you with a list of tracks that surrounded you throughout the day. Now it's getting an update that adds a Now Playing Summary (very likely before Google could even add it), backups, multiple database support, and more.

After rolling out a massive update for the Ambient Music Mod earlier this month, XDA Recognized Developer Quinny899 has now released a fresh update for the mod. The latest release brings support for armv7 devices, several bug fixes, and a couple of new customization features.

Most people will agree that the software on Pixel smartphones showcase what Google believes Android should be, and as such, the software is often well-received by enthusiasts. Nonetheless, thanks to the dedicated modding community, you don’t necessarily have to own a Pixel device to take advantage of its software features. The "Now Playing" functionality, for example, has remained exclusive to the Pixel lineup, but developer Kieron Quinn, also known as Quinny899 on our forums, managed to port it to other Android smartphones in the form of a hybrid Xposed-Magisk module named Ambient Music Mod. Now, Quinn has taken things a step further and completely overhauled the mod to make it a non-root solution.

Now Playing is one of the marquee features of the Pixel software experience. On the Pixel 6 series, Now Playing gained a search button on the lockscreen, allowing users to quickly lookup songs that Google failed to identity. And soon it will also let you like songs so you can find all your favorite tracks in one place.

Google debuted the Now Playing feature with the Pixel 2 series back in 2018, and it has remained an integral part of the Pixel lineup ever since. The feature employs a combination of onboard hardware, software, and Google’s machine learning magic to identify songs playing in the background. Now Playing was intended to be a Pixel-exclusive feature, but it was only a matter of time before custom ROM developers managed to make it work on top of an AOSP codebase and come up with their own take on the feature.

When Google announced the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in late 2017, they introduced a feature called "Now Playing" to the Google Pixel series. The feature analyzes background music playback using a combination of software, hardware, and machine learning to show you what song is playing by comparing the audio fingerprint against an offline song recognition database containing tens of thousands of songs. With the launch of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, Google updated Now Playing to show the history of recognized songs. Now, we have discovered that Google is preparing to enhance Now Playing once more with the addition of location and activity tracking.

Google has many good features built into their stock ROMs that are hard to port to other devices. This includes features like Now Playing and Call Screening. Well, at the moment full ports of both those features are not possible. Features similar, on the other hand, are possible. The Pixel Experience team added a new feature that mimics Now Playing into their Android Pie ROM which is out now for the OnePlus 6. This feature was created by the CypherOS team.

Speed, Simplicity, and Security. These 3 words have been used to describe Google's Chrome OS—its desktop/laptop operating system built on the Linux kernel—since it was first introduced. But I would argue that Google's Pixel line of Android smartphones also embodies the three S's in Chrome OS' motto. Google's approach with the Pixel line is wildly different when compared to most Android device makers. Instead of packing every software feature imaginable along with every possible sensor, Google focuses on bringing the best camera performance with the least effort required from the user. Each new iteration of Pixel phone also brings a few new non-camera software features to the table as well as many under-the-hood performance and security enhancements, and the end result is a smartphone with the best of Google software. The Google Pixel 3 XL smartphone has a ton of new Google Camera features and a clean Android Pie interface with some useful additions, but it also has the controversial display notch.

It's been a crazy week for fans of the Google Pixel smartphone line. After a steady trickle of leaks in the first half of the year originating mainly from industry sources, we've now had three separate instances of the Google Pixel 3 XL appearing in public. The first and second leaks originated on our very own forums, and while they revealed the new design and some of the basic hardware specifications, the leakers were unable to share further details because the devices weren't functional. This month, however, several bloggers and YouTubers, mainly from the Ukraine and Russia, got their hands on stolen pre-production Pixel 3 XL units. We've seen a full unboxing video, AnTuTu benchmark rundown, sample photos, and even full reviews. Given how many Pixel 3 XLs are now out in the wild, we haven't even scratched the surface of how many leaks we'll be getting ahead of the device's expected October launch. To help you wrap your head around the plethora of leaks we've seen, here's a summary of everything we know so far about the Google Pixel 3 XL.

Google's flagship Pixel 2 smartphone series doesn't seem to offer a lot of features when compared to the likes of the Huawei Mate 10 or Samsung Galaxy Note 8, but there are a few unique features that are grabbing everyone's attention. First, there's the Google Camera with Google's powerful portrait mode technology. Then, there's also the Now Playing feature which uses the device's microphone in order to recognize music playing in the background. While the Google Pixel 2's awesome portrait mode feature has been ported to other devices already, the Now Playing feature has remained exclusive to the device. That may change in the near future, however, as a developer has managed to port Now Playing to AOSP-based ROMs.

Google's latest Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL flagships have an awesome new feature called "Now Playing." Using a combination of software, hardware, and machine learning, the Pixel 2 uses an offline database to identify tens of thousands of songs playing in the background. It then displays those songs on your device's lock screen, always on display, or as an ongoing notification. The feature sounds gimmicky on paper, but after using it myself I found that it works really well. That being said, this kind of feature isn't everyone's cup of tea, so XDA Recognized Contributor Quinny899 came up with an app called Ambient Lock Screen Music which allows you to display the name and artist of any currently playing song on your device where the Now Playing text would normally appear.
