Nvidia dropped some bad news on Shield TV users today, announcing that it would discontinue support for its GameStream starting early next year. GameStream was a powerful tool that allowed Shield TV users to harness the power of their gaming PC over the network for an incredible gaming experience at 4K and 60 frames per second.

Nvidia is probably best known for its graphics cards, but the company has also sold set-top boxes powered by Android TV under the 'Shield' name since 2015. Even though Nvidia has refreshed the hardware a few times since then (and made a separate stick model), all Shield TV devices are still supported by software updates. Now the company is rolling out Android TV 11 to all Shield TV products, including the original 2015 model.

In that case, you'll want to pick up an external streaming TV player, the best of which is the NVIDIA SHIELD TV.

NVIDIA announced the next generation of SHIELD TV devices back in October, the SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro. The Pro model is largely an update of the previous SHIELD TV, but the non-Pro model marked a big form factor shift to a dongle. Both of these new devices come with a completely redesigned remote, which is finally available to purchase separately.

The NVIDIA Shield TV (streaming stick) is one of the best Android TV devices on the market. It has 4K AI upscaling with Dolby Vision along with NVIDIA's own gaming apps. One of the only big issues with the new Shield TV is its storage capacity. It only has 8GB of storage, which NVIDIA says is enough for “50-70 streaming apps,” but for some people, this isn't enough. Luckily, NVIDIA included a microSD card slot to expand the storage.
