One UI 6 hands-on

Samsung's One UI 6 beta has landed, and it brings a handful of exciting features and some improvements over the One UI 5.1. It wasn't the smoothest rollout, but the update is finally available for all Galaxy S23 series devices across a few countries. I've been using the One UI 6 beta on my Galaxy S23 for about a week now, and my overall experience has been mostly positive. Switching to One UI 6 has made me use my Galaxy S23 a lot more than the Pixel 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 running One UI 5.1, which is a good indication of my overall experience. There are a few things about the software that I like more than the others, so I decided to highlight some of my favorite One UI 6 changes and improvements below. Let's dive in!

Samsung's One UI 6 beta was launched earlier this month based on Android 14, and now, the brand has released Beta 2, bringing numerous bug fixes and improvements. The update is rolling out to supported countries and those enrolled in Samsung's beta program.

Android 14 is inching closer to its final stable release, and Samsung seems quite interested in getting its own version out to its customers as soon as possible after that. The Korean OEM's hard at work adapting the latest iteration of everybody's favorite mobile OS for its own devices in the form of One UI 6.0. Here is everything you need to do to keep track of the company's beta program and install it on your device.

Following a ton of leaks, rumors and speculation over the past several weeks, Samsung has finally announced the One UI 6.0 beta program for the Galaxy S23 series. The new software is based on Android 14, and is expected to offer a slew of new features and a more user-friendly experience. News about the beta program was revealed earlier this week when Samsung Germany published (and then hastily deleted) a press release announcing the One UI 6 beta roll-out for the company's latest mainstream flagships.

Samsung has steadily been improving the momentum of its software update over the last few years. When it comes to the monthly security patches, the performance is already impeccable, but major Android updates are still two or three months behind Google. As usual, there's no Android 14 beta initiative from the Korean OEM, but last week there was a rumor that Samsung would be kickstarting the One UI 6 beta program in this month. That seems to be the case, as one of the regional company newsrooms accidentally announced the beta early before swiftly deleting the post.

It looks like the initial reports were a little off the mark when they stated that One UI 6.0 would be arriving to Samsung Galaxy S23 series handsets in July. Luckily, the early reports were not off by much though, because if new information is to be believed, it appears that the aforementioned devices could begin receiving the update starting this week.

Samsung is reportedly prepping to release its One UI 6.0 beta for the Galaxy S23 series in the third week of July. That's according to SamMobile, which says the software will also be rolled out to other compatible smartphones and tablets "soon thereafter." The S23 series is currently running One UI 5.1 based on Android 13, while One UI 6 is expected to be based on Android 14.

Samsung has confirmed that its One UI 5 Watch beta has been delayed, and there's no time frame for its roll-out as of now. The company had announced earlier this year that it had started work on One UI 5 Watch, and added that beta release for the software will be rolled out to compatible models in May. The One UI Watch beta program was launched last year for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 lineups.

One UI is one of the main reasons why Samsung Galaxy devices are among the best phones on the market. The Android skin offers a fast and smooth experience and packs a boatload of additional features that give it an edge over other OEM Android skins. The best part is that Samsung keeps adding more useful features to the mix with each successive update. For instance, One UI 5 based on Android 13 introduced stackable widget support, new multitasking gestures, lock screen customizations, and much more.

One UI 5.1 has been rolling out to older Samsung Galaxy devices quickly in the last few weeks. Despite only being an incremental upgrade over 5.0, it carries over several small but useful features from the Galaxy S23 series to its older siblings. Now, the One UI 5.1 release has arrived on a few more Samsung phones, including the Galaxy A73 5G, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and the Galaxy Note 20 family.

One UI 5.1 is the latest iteration of Samsung’s custom Android skin. It made its debut on the Galaxy S23 series and subsequently available as an incremental update to a number of flagships running One UI 5.0. Now, the Korean OEM is rolling out the new firmware for the Galaxy S21 FE and the 5G variant of the Galaxy S20 FE in multiple regions.

Samsung has rolled out its Android 13 update to many phones and tablets, branded as One UI 5.0, but the Korean OEM introduced a minor revision with the Galaxy S23 series. The One UI 5.1 update was hinted to arrive on select phones and tablets, but the company didn't specify any official roadmap. Nonetheless, the rollout has already started in full swing, as the Galaxy S22, S21, S20, as well as the foldables have picked up the new release.

Another day, another modder shoehorning the newest Android build to legacy devices. While the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is stealing all the limelight, a developer in our forums has managed to port One UI 5.0 with Android 13 to the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 in the form of an aftermarket firmware called Noble ROM.

So far, Samsung has done a pretty good job in rolling out One UI 5 to its lineup of Galaxy smartphones and tablets, but there’s still a fair bit of work to do. Even though the holiday season is upon us, the company has been expanding Android 13 to more Galaxy A, M, and XCover series devices over the past few days.

In a few weeks, Samsung will lift the covers off the highly-anticipated Galaxy S23 series. Rumor has it that the next-gen flagship lineup will feature a slightly updated design, Qualcomm's latest flagship SoC, upgraded cameras, brighter displays, and bigger batteries. In addition to the hardware upgrades, Samsung will likely introduce a few software improvements with the Galaxy S23 lineup. Although the company hasn't officially shared any details, a recent leak suggests that the smartphones could launch with a new version of One UI 5 based on Android 13.
