LineageOS is the most popular AOSP-based custom ROM out there. Its origin can be traced back to CyanogenMod, which was itself not only the most well-known custom ROM many years ago but also the reason the OnePlus One was so well-received by the community. Over the years, the team behind LineageOS has kept the project updated with new versions of Android for dozens of Android devices. The latest version, LineageOS 17.1, is based on Android 10 and supports a long list of devices. Now, the custom ROM team has added official support for their latest release for a lot of devices from OnePlus, Samsung, Xiaomi, and more. Newly added devices include the Essential Phone, Moto X (2014), Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016), Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, and more.

There was a void left behind when Google shifted away from the Nexus program to focus on the Pixel brand. Many would agree that OnePlus has been able to fill that void with their high-end hardware, premium design, and respectable update speed while keeping the price from getting too inflated. With Google releasing the source code to Android 9 Pie recently, many of the community developers here have begun their work on ports of the new Android Pie update for a handful of OnePlus smartphones including the OnePlus X, OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3, and OnePlus 3T. The OnePlus X and OnePlus 2 did not receive the Android Nougat update, so this will be a major version bump for those devices. On the other hand, the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are promised an official Android Pie update, so these ROMs will be a nice way to experience the latest release before the official update.

On all supported devices, LineageOS 15.1 is released on a weekly basis. It can be hard to keep up with what's new in the popular AOSP-based custom ROM unless you religiously follow their Gerrit, so the team has put together a changelog to keep you updated on what's new in the ROM. Today, the team has published their 18th changelog, and there's a lot of features to cover since their last changelog post on April 1st. Here's what's new:

Google Nexus Player and OnePlus 2 receive official LineageOS 15.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo

The Google Nexus Player and OnePlus 2, both popular devices that have ceased receiving software upgrades, can now enjoy Android 8.1 Oreo thanks to official LineageOS 15.1 support.

Google and OnePlus devices are among the most popular devices on our forums because of the respective companies' openness to customization. The Google Nexus Player was one of the few popular Android TV devices on the market, and it had a long life. It launched with Android Lollipop and upgrades until Android Oreo. While the OnePlus 2 also launched with Lollipop, support for that device unfortunately ended with Android Marshmallow. Thanks to official LineageOS 15.1, however, both devices now have a fairly stable release of Android 8.1 Oreo.

Exploit Targets Qualcomm's EDL Mode, Affects Some Xiaomi, OnePlus, Nokia and other Devices

Qualcomm devices have an EDL mode, which as it turns out seems to be exploitable if you have the right tools released by the OEMs.

Devices with Qualcomm chipsets have a Primary Bootloader (PBL) which typically boots the Android system, but also houses an alternative boot mode known as EDL mode. EDL mode is Qualcomm's Emergency Download Mode and allows an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to force flash software on a device. This cannot be modified (read-only mode) and has full control over the device's storage. Many OEMs including OnePlus and Xiaomi have released tools (known as programmers) which utilize EDL mode and a protocol known as Firehose to unbrick a device, while other tools from companies such as Nokia have leaked. Firehose can utilize a number of commands to flash devices, along with the ability to examine the data within a device's memory. Security researchers Roee Hay (@roeehay) and Noam Hadad from Aleph Research have discovered critical device vulnerabilities using this mode, which effectively grants an attacker full device access.

OnePlus OxygenOS Data Collection
OxygenOS is Allegedly Data-mining Personally Identifiable Information for Analytics

OxygenOS developed by OnePlus is lauded as one of the best OEM flavours of Android around, but yet it is not without its flaws. Privacy concerns galore.

While the OnePlus phones have a good reputation for their price and openness to development, the company itself has made some questionable decisions in the past with regards to how they handle user data. At the time, we discovered that OxygenOS would leak your device's IMEI onto the network while your device checks for an update. Now, OnePlus is accused of collecting even more sensitive, personally identifiable information according to security researcher Christopher Moore.

A lot of OnePlus 2 owners have felt burned due to the lack of OTA updates that OnePlus has pushed out. For a while, owners of these devices were told that the OnePlus 2 was eventually going to be receiving an official update to Android 7.0 Nougat. That unfortunately turned out not to be the case, thus making the last official build of OxygenOS for the device to be based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Thankfully, the device still has quite the developer support on our forums, and developers have just released an early build of LineageOS 15 based on Android 8.0 Oreo for the device.
