A new Samsung patent that was filed at the beginning of the year has popped up on WIPO, showing off transparent display technology.
It's hard to believe but the first Samsung Galaxy Z Fold was released close to three years ago. Before 2019, a device with a foldable display was something you'd only see in technology demos or science fiction movies. In 2022, foldable smartphones are produced by nearly every major manufacturer, and it's become quite common. So we ask ourselves, what's next? A recent Samsung patent application has popped up on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) website and shows off a display that could give us a potential look at the smartphones of the future.
HTC stops selling phones in the UK due to patent dispute
HTC has stopped selling its smartphones in the UK due to a patent dispute, as the company was found to be in violation of an agreement made in 2012.
Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC isn't dead, although it may as well be in the UK. Due to a patent dispute with Munich-based research and development company Ipcom, the company has pulled its smartphones from the UK market. The patent specifically pertains to car phones, which HTC agreed in 2012 to sell their phones in the UK with a workaround. However, Ipcom confirmed via testing that HTC did not implement the workaround, and instead continued to violate the patent. Ipcom said HTC had failed to "play by the rules" and had displayed "disregard for the law by contravening a UK court ruling".
Samsung and Huawei agree to settle dispute over smartphone patents
After years of battling against each other in court, both Samsung and Huawei have agreed to settle their patents dispute going forward.
Patent laws are incredibly complex and can vary from country to country. Both Samsung and Huawei are two massive companies that have been familiar with this stuff for decades. Samsung has had its share of patent lawsuits against other tech giants such as Apple, but Samsung has also been hit with a couple of suits from Huawei as well. After years of battling against each other in court, both Samsung and Huawei have agreed to settle their disputes going forward.
