If you are a long-time Android user, from perhaps the Gingerbread or even Froyo era, then you definitely have heard about Poweramp. Poweramp is one of the oldest and still updated music players for Android, that has been around for as long as the OS has been around. Over these years, the very concept of music on a smartphone has evolved from being primarily focused around locally stored content to now increasingly revolving around online streaming service. As a music player, Poweramp has largely resisted this evolution, but the app has now had to adapt to accommodate the changing needs of the current generation consumer. The newest update to Poweramp, namely update 846, adds Powersteam, an HTTP streaming feature that allows the music player to stream online radio.

When talking about third-party music players, the first name that always springs to mind is Poweramp. Granted, there are plenty of good music players out there on the Play Store, but none match the level of customization and features that Poweramp offers. Poweramp was the go-to music player for a vast majority of Android users in the old days and it continues to be the choice of music player for power users and audiophiles. The app keeps getting better with new feature additions and improvements. The last few updates to the app brought support for Android Auto, improved Google Assistant integration, and added Hi-Res playback for Huawei devices running Android Pie among other things. The app is now receiving a new update which further expands the feature list and improves stability.

Poweramp is arguably one of the most popular audio players for Android. While it's user interface never turned any heads, it was the functionality that had users loving the app. Some of the unique features are powerful bass and treble controls, Hi-Res output support, DVC, lyrics support and so much more. To put it in short, it was a must-have application for all mobile audiophiles. It has previously received a long overdue update with a major UI overhaul. You can still tell that intuitive design isn't the main focus of the app, but it's much better than the earlier version from 2016.

Poweramp is a free and incredibly popular music player available in the Play Store. With over 50 million downloads and an average of 4.4-star reviews, it has become the music player of choice for many, many people. Not everyone prefers music streaming services like Spotify, YouTube Music, Pandora, or Apple Music, so Poweramp has given people an application for local music playback that comes with a lot of features. However, it hasn't been much of a looker in the UI department, but their version 3 beta redesign is finally stable and available in the Play Store right now.

Poweramp returns from the grave with a new UI

Poweramp, one of the most renowned and feature-filled music players out there, is set to receive its first update in more than a year. And it's pretty significant.

Most audiophiles around here probably remember Poweramp. The paid ($3.99) music player might not be a winner in the looks department, but it makes up for it by being one of the most feature-rich music players out there. So feature rich and reliable, in fact, that it remained the player of choice for some users despite an absolute lack of updates since September 2016. It supports a wide range of audio files including mp3, m4a, ogg, wma, flac, and others, as well as including an internal equalizer, crossfade, gapless playback, support for displaying lyrics (powered by Musixmatch) and a whole lot more. A major update for Poweramp is, however, coming very soon.

Listening to your tunes while using your phone is a fairly common way to use your device. Unfortunately, if you want to listen to your music and see a visual representation of the audio playback, you would usually have to remain within the music app.
