The Samsung Galaxy S21 flagship smartphones have finally been unpacked officially. As expected, these Samsung flagships for early 2021 are packed with class-leading specifications. On the list of the upgraded specifications, we also find the new and (claimed to be) much improved ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner on all three of the Galaxy S21 devices. Samsung says the new sensor is 1.7x larger than the previous generation. We reckon that this new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra improves biometric unlocking on these devices for reasons beyond just an increase in the scanning area.

With the launch of the Snapdragon 855 back in 2018, Qualcomm debuted the first-gen Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. The under-display fingerprint sensor solution used ultrasonic waves for biometric authentication, making it more secure and accurate than optical sensors that use light for the same purpose. As a result, many flagship devices, like the Galaxy S10 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, Galaxy S20 series, and the Galaxy Note 20 series, used the 3D Sonic Sensor for biometric authentication. Today, Qualcomm has lifted the covers off of the second-gen 3D Sonic Sensor, which brings significant improvements over the previous model.

After months of leaks and rumors, Samsung finally unveiled its flagship Galaxy S20 series at the Samsung Unpacked event earlier this year in February. As expected, the devices came equipped with top-of-the-line specifications, including either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC or an Exynos 990 chipset, up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, up to 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage, and some impressive camera hardware. For biometric authentication, the Galaxy S20 series features Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Sensor, which is Qualcomm's first-gen under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner technology.

In a move to push wider adoption of its in-display ultrasonic fingerprint technology on premium smartphones, Qualcomm on Tuesday inked a strategic deal with the Chinese smartphone display maker BOE. Under this partnership, BOE‌ will offer its customers integrated OLED panels with Qualcomm’s 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensors built-in. BOE‌ is the second-largest smartphone OLED panel manufacturer on the market and its customer base includes some of the biggest smartphone players such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and more.

At Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017, Qualcomm took the wraps off the Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform, its latest lower-mid-range SoC. The new chipset brings number of improvements over its predecessor including an updated GPU, improved camera performance as well as faster modem.
