Qualcomm is currently dominating the mobile space in both the higher-end market as well as the mid-range market. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is their latest high-end mobile system-on-chip, and it's a significant upgrade from last year's Snapdragon 845 in many different ways, with an Adreno 640 GPU, a 7nm-based octa-core setup, and a dedicated NPU being only some of the improvements on board the Snapdragon 855. Said chipset is used on several 2019 flagship devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S10 series, the LG G8 ThinQ/V50 ThinQ, and the OnePlus 7/7 Pro. The Snapdragon 675, on the other hand, is one of the most notable midrange SoCs this year, and it's used on several devices such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Are you prepared for one of the best years that we've ever seen in Android's short history? 2019 started off strong with the Honor View 20 and its punch hole display, but even mid-rangers have a lot to offer this year. Take the Vivo V15Pro that was just announced today. This smartphone is powered by the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 (which technically makes it the first phone with this processor) rather than the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. Vivo's choice in SoC betrays the fact that this smartphone is premium in most other important aspects. The Vivo V15Pro has a nearly bezel-less display thanks to what Vivo calls the "Elevating Front Camera," a triple rear camera setup including a 48MP sensor, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a nearly bezel-less AMOLED display, Vivo's Dual-Engine Fast Charging, a headphone jack, and more.

I still remember the first time I used a Xiaomi phone. Xiaomi entered the Indian smartphone market in July 2014, and I purchased the Xiaomi Redmi 1s in September of that year. The Redmi 1s was Xiaomi's first budget phone to be launched in India, and even at that time, I was impressed by the phone's value proposition. It redefined the $100 smartphone market in India by including specifications that could be found only in phones that cost twice the price. The overall package was hard to beat, and even after taking into consideration the limitations of flash sales, the Redmi 1s went on to become a bestseller.

Chinese OEM Meizu does not have large presence outside of China, but that does not stop the OEM from experimenting with quirky phones like the portless and buttonless Meizu Zero, the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus with dual displays, or other conventional smartphones like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-equipped, affordable flagship Meizu M16th. Today, Meizu has released the next generation of smartphone in its Note series in the form of the Meizu Note 9.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show is all about companies showing off their visions for the future of technology. Chinese electronics company HiSense is at this year's event with a range of new television products, but they also brought some of their new smartphones to the show floor. I caught a glimpse at one of their upcoming smartphones, the HiSense U30, and was drawn to the device. The U30 is one of the few smartphones with a display hole (or punch hole, whatever you want to call it) for its front-facing camera. Unlike the Huawei Nova 4, Samsung Galaxy A8s, and Honor View 20, which all had multiple social media teasers and official launch events, the HiSense U30 was just sitting there at a table at CES. Before I show you what it looks like in more detail, here's a broad overview of its specifications.

For a few years now, we’ve seen affordable phones become competitive options that are able to satisfy the needs of more and more customers. As OEMs shifted their focus towards emergent markets, cost became a premier concern and mid-range components were put into the spotlight. Qualcomm’s 600 series best exemplifies this shift in enthusiast minds, as its chips found their way into over 1,450 designs according to Qualcomm. The company recently announced a few new chips in the family with the Snapdragon 632 and August’s Snapdragon 670. Just a couple of months later, the company is introducing a slight revision to that last chip with the new Snapdragon 675.
