Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs MediaTek Dimensity 9200
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs MediaTek Dimensity 9200: Battle of the titans

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9200 are the best smartphone chipsets to date, but only one is victorious.

For years when it came to flagships, Qualcomm was the undisputed number one when it came to flagship chipsets. At times, the company would trade blows with Samsung's Exynos chips, but in recent years Samsung's chipset prowess has come to a halt. The Samsung Galaxy S23 series carries the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the Exynos 2200 in the S22 series was a complete mess. However, MediaTek has now taken up the mantle as the primary Qualcomm competitor, and the chipset battle is heating up.

When the Samsung Galaxy S23 series was released, Samsung had one feature that nobody else had: a custom 8 Gen 2 chipset from Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy was touted as an exclusive for Samsung, but at the time, we theorized that this was exactly what a "Plus" variant would look like. Now, what appears to essentially be a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 has quietly been released in the RedMagic 8S Pro. We can confirm after getting our hands on a review unit that it's the same chipset as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, and Qualcomm has now confirmed it to us.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the latest flagship SoC from Qualcomm, but how much better is it than the phenomenal 8 Plus Gen 1?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the latest and greatest flagship chipset, and it's the clear winner compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It beats the 8 Gen 1 in efficiency, CPU, and GPU — it's not a contest, really. It was clearly due to energy efficiency that the 8 Gen 1 did so poorly, but as we noted last year, the 8 Plus Gen 1 came along and righted many wrongs. We knew the 8 Gen 2 would handily dispatch of the 8 Gen 1, but how does it fare against the 8 Plus Gen 1?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is very likely the best chipset in the business right now, and that's thanks to a number of factors. It has an incredibly powerful GPU, strong computational capabilities, and it'll be the backbone of many high-tier devices released in 2023. There's no question that it's a better SoC than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but by how much?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 arrived to much fanfare in the Android world, seemingly answering all of last generation's problems. A better CPU and a better GPU in a more power-efficient package can only be a good thing, and after the homerun Qualcomm hit with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, we were excited to see how it fared. We intend on putting it to the test against multiple different chipsets, but the one we were most interested in is the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is finally here, and one of the most exciting aspects of the series is that it will pack Qualcomm chipsets in all versions of the phone across the world. However, there's a twist; it's not just a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it's a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. It doesn't mean a lot, but we've been able to piece together most of the picture from the spec sheets Samsung shared with us.

The iQoo 11 is an upper mid-tier (or entry-level flagship, depending on how you want to look at it) phone targeting the China and Southeast Asia region, released by a Chinese sub-brand that pumps out phones every few months. Normally, such a device wouldn't command much global attention, but this one is different. It's the first phone to offer us a look a three new pieces of new mobile hardware that will be the Android flagship standard in 2023.

Just last week saw the announcement of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 at the company's tech summit in Hawaii. Qualcomm's latest chipset packs upgraded specifications and on the TSMC manufacturing process, which, if the 8 Plus Gen 1 is anything to go by, should net some efficiency gains. On top of that, while the company was hesitant to provide in-depth technical details in some aspects (including neglecting to mention an Adreno or Kryo version name), we could still run a gamut of popular benchmarks on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 reference device. These benchmarks help set the baseline of performance expectations for upcoming flagships in 2023, giving us something to look forward to.

Qualcomm unveiled its latest flagship smartphone chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, at the ongoing Snapdragon Summit 2022 in Hawaii. The new SoC brings several improvements over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, including beefed-up CPU cores, a new Adreno GPU with Vulkan 1.3 and AV1 decode support, and more. It's safe to assume that most 2023 flagships will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but if you're wondering exactly which phones will launch with the new SoC, we now have some answers.

Qualcomm is the biggest chipset manufacturer in the Android world, and following on from last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the company launched the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. This was one of the best mobile chipsets that we have ever tested, though came with fierce competition from the likes of MediaTek. Now, though, the company's Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 builds on the success of last year's Plus model, manufactured on TSMC's fabrication process and packing beefed-up cores.

Samsung debuted its first Exynos SoC with hardware-accelerated ray tracing support earlier this year. The all-new Exynos 2200 featured its first AMD RDNA 2-based GPU, the Xclipse 920, which not only enabled ray tracing on mobile but also promised "console-quality" immersive visuals in mobile games. Arm followed it up with the Immortalis-G715 GPU in June, its first GPU to support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Qualcomm is now following suit with its latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Ahead of its official announcement, Oppo has demoed its open ray tracing solution that will enable developers and creators to offer new ray tracing experiences on devices featuring Qualcomm's latest chipset.

Qualcomm will unveil its next flagship SoC for smartphones at Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii later this year. We expect the upcoming chipset, likely called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, to bring several improvements over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from last year. Although Qualcomm has not shared any details about the chipset so far, various leaks suggest that the upcoming chipset will go by the model number SM8550 and could feature native AV1 decoding support. In addition, a new leak now claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will bring significant NPU, ISP, and GPU improvements to the table. The leak in question comes from Ice Universe, and it suggests that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be based on TSMC's 4nm process. It further reveals that Qualcomm will opt for a 1+2+2+3 core arrangement, consisting of a Cortex-X3 Prime core clocked at 3.2GHz, two Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8GHz, two Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.8GHz, and three Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2.GHz.
