Realme is now looking forward to launching the Realme X3 and the Realme X3 SuperZoom in India.

Last year's flagship parts make this year's "flagship killers"

While many of the devices that were considered a "flagship killer" are rising in prices, a new crop of phones is using last year's tech to undercut them.

It's no mystery that 5G has a big impact on the prices of premium smartphones. Carriers see 5G as a marketing term they can tout even before it's actually widely available, resulting in manufacturers being pushed to include a feature not many people can use. 5G and the many components that are needed to support it are undoubtedly raising prices of flagship phones, but we're starting to see some OEMs balk at this trend. What might be considered a "flagship" just last year can now be considered a "flagship killer."

Realme has a wide range of choices across various price segments. After initially focussing on budget and mid-range phones, Realme forayed into the flagship killer segment with the launch of the Realme X2 Pro (review). The flagship killer was soon followed by the company's first 5G phone – the X50 Pro (review) – that was powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. Now, Realme is launching another flagship which, as per its name, looks like the true successor to the Realme X2 Pro. The latest flagship – Realme X3 SuperZoom comes with a Snapdragon 855 Plus and a periscopic telephoto setup that we saw on phones such as the Huawei P30 Pro (review), OPPO Reno 10X (review), and more recently, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition.

Realme has grown at an astonishing rate over the last year and this controverts the globally declining demand for smartphones. Starting its journey with entry-level smartphones, Realme has rapidly evolved to grab a major chunk of the mid-range segment and is now vying for a share in the segment of flagships – or rather, flagship killers. Last month, Realme launched the Realme X2 Pro, their first true flagship smartphone, in China and Europe and today they're launching the smartphone in India for an insane price of ₹29,999 ($417).

[Update 3: Launched in India] The Nubia Red Magic 3S is an upgraded Red Magic 3 with the Snapdragon 855 Plus and UFS 3.0 storage

Nubia just announced their latest gaming smartphone, the Red Magic 3S. It comes with flagship specs and the latest features at a great price.

The Red Magic 3 by Nubia was an interesting gaming smartphone that launched earlier this year. It had top of the line specifications (Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and 90Hz OLED display) with unique, albeit gimmicky features (8K video recording), all at a great price. In my view, it ended up being more of a portable gaming device than an actual smartphone. This isn't a bad thing, though, and Nubia seems to be doubling down on this strategy. That's why Nubia announced the Red Magic 3S, an upgraded version of the Red Magic 3.

OnePlus 7T Pro Review - More of the same, but hampered by software

The OnePlus 7T Pro is finally here, but it's nowhere near as good as the OnePlus 7 Pro was when it launched. Check out our full review here.

Earlier this year, our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal crowned the OnePlus 7 Pro as his favorite smartphone of 2019 shortly after its launch, a high bar to reach for any smartphone manufacturer. A combination of incredible specs, a fantastic display, and a reasonable price meant that the OnePlus 7 Pro caught the eye of many. An argument can be made that buying a smartphone without a headphone jack, wireless charging, IP rating, notification light or a world-class camera for the starting cost of $669 is the very definition of "settling", but I disagree. Lacking in some features does not take away from the other features that OnePlus has introduced over its last few smartphone iterations. Now we're on to the OnePlus 7T Pro - and I hate to break it to you, but it's pretty much just more of the same.

Ever since the OnePlus 3, OnePlus has launched two flagships in a year: one in the first half of the year, coming in with the best upgrades across hardware and software, often with a new design; and a second in the second half of the year, featuring several incremental updates to compete better against the newer launches from the competition. With the launch of the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro, the OEM switched up its strategy and defied its own tradition, targeting two different price points and consequently different needs. Many wrote off the need to launch a second device later in the year, but OnePlus is determined to offer an updated and practical package to its users. Meet the new OnePlus 7T, bringing over some of the best upgrades from the OnePlus 7 Pro to a lower price point, and then adding in some of its own.

Last year, ASUS launched its first gaming smartphone under its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand. Dubbed the ROG Phone, ASUS' foray into gaming was also our first taste at a high refresh rate OLED display. With an overclocked Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 90Hz FHD AMOLED, three USB Type-C ports, ultrasonic pressure-sensitive "Air Trigger" buttons, and a ridiculous clip-on fan accessory, the ROG Phone screamed, "I am a gaming phone." ASUS' strategy in 2019 has been focused on catering to power users and gamers, and we've already seen what this change in direction means for power users with the company's ZenFone 6. Now, the Taiwanese brand has just unveiled its next phone for gamers, the ASUS ROG Phone II.

Qualcomm unveils the Snapdragon 855 Plus with an overclocked CPU and GPU

In December of 2018, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. It's the company's most powerful chip designed for smartphones and tablets, and over half a year later, we've already seen it ship in devices like the U.S. Samsung Galaxy S10, Xiaomi Mi 9, OnePlus 7 Pro, and ASUS ZenFone 6. We've also seen the 855 appear in gaming-centric smartphones like the Black Shark 2 and Red Magic 3. Seeing this upward trend of mobile gaming, especially in huge markets like India and China, Qualcomm decided this year that they needed to better target mobile gamers. That's why they designed the Snapdragon 730G, an SoC for upper mid-range gaming phones, and why they're now announcing the Snapdragon 855 Plus. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus mobile platform is basically the Snapdragon 855 we've seen in over a dozen new smartphones this year, but it's got an overclocked CPU and GPU to deliver better gaming performance.
