One UI 2.5 Exynos 7870 H-ROM
One UI 2.5 ported to multiple Samsung Galaxy phones with the Exynos 7870

XDA Recognized Developer Astrako has ported One UI 2.5 from the Galaxy Note 20 for several Exynos 7870-powered Samsung Galaxy devices.

Samsung rolled out One UI 2.1 based on Android 10 for several Exynos 7870-powered devices earlier this year in April. However, the update didn't include the One UI 2.1-specific software features that were introduced with the company's flagship Galaxy S20 series. This prompted XDA Recognized Developer Astrako to release a generic Android 10 ROM for Exynos 7870-powered devices called H-ROM with the new One UI 2.1 features. With the Galaxy Note 20 series launch earlier this month, Samsung released One UI 2.5 with more new features and the software is scheduled to make its way to many of the company's older flagships. However, Galaxy devices featuring the Exynos 7870 chipset have been left out once again. Thankfully, Astrako has now released a One UI 2.5-based port of H-ROM for these devices.

Back in April 2020, Samsung delivered the Android 10 update to the Galaxy J6 sans the One UI 2.1-specific software features. The phone is powered by the Exynos 7870 chipset, a 14nm octa-core SoC from 2016 that also powers several mid-range Samsung Galaxy phones. Many of those Exynos 7870-equipped devices are excluded from getting the official Android 10 update from Samsung, although they are theoretically capable of running it. To fill the void, XDA Recognized Developer Astrako has now compiled a generic Android 10 ROM containing a bunch of One UI 2.1 features from the Galaxy S20 series for the Exynos 7870 platform.

Developers bring Project Treble support to several Samsung Galaxy phones with the Exynos 7870

A bunch of Exynos 7870-powered Samsung Galaxy phones have received Project Treble compatibility via manual partitioning and a custom vendor implementation.

The Exynos 7870 is one of the most widely used SoCs by Samsung. The OEM had been using this octa-core (8x ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz) system-on-chip in its phones since 2016 and even released the Galaxy M10 in 2019 with the same 14nm processor. Interestingly, some of the newer Exynos 7870-powered devices were launched with Android Oreo onboard, which made them compatible with Project Treble. While Samsung didn't officially backport Treble support to legacy Exynos 7870 smartphones, XDA's developer community has managed to do it anyway.

The positive effect of Project Treble on the update fragmentation issue in the Android ecosystem can't be denied. Thanks to Google's effort to modularize the OS, mainstream OEMs are not as reluctant to deliver major Android version updates to legacy and/or entry-level smartphones anymore. Two such devices - the Galaxy J6 from Samsung and the Nokia 3.2 from HMD Global - have now started to receive stable Android 10 OTAs in select regions.

Traditionally, Samsung had been among the laggards in terms of the latest software update. But over the last one year, the situation has improved a lot and Samsung has been pushing the latest One UI update based on Android 9.0 Pie to not only its flagships but also some mid-range devices. Now, three more Samsung smartphones from the budget and the mid-range segments are getting a taste of Pie. With the One UI update, the Samsung Galaxy J4/J4+ and Galaxy J6 will get improvements to the user experience, notifications, Samsung Keyboard, Bixby, as well as the overall performance.

The year 2019 has signified a gigantic shift of direction for Samsung's mobile division. While their 2018 flagships received some criticism for looking eerily similar to their predecessors, Samsung lost the fear to innovate with their 2019 smartphones: the Galaxy S10 line uses Infinity-O punch-hole displays as an alternative to notches and their new Galaxy A smartphones use teardrop notches, with the recently-announced Galaxy A80 going all out into the unique realm with a New Infinity bezel-less display and a motorized swivel pop-up camera. One UI, their latest customization skin based on Android Pie, also represents a wildly different experience from Samsung's previous Samsung Experience skin.

Samsung has over a dozen different smartphone labels in which they sell around the world. You likely know their most popular one, being the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the soon-t0-be released Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Samsung makes those two series of phones in virtually every country they have a presence in. However, there are other devices that are made for a certain country that may value a specific price, or a specific build material, or even a specific type of hardware. Two of these devices are limited to certain countries, the Galaxy J6 Prime and the Galaxy A9 are both said coming to the European Union as well as some other markets.

In May, Samsung launched the mid-range Samsung Galaxy J6 along with the Samsung Galaxy A6, Samsung Galaxy A6+, and Samsung Galaxy J8 in India. All four of these smartphones feature Samsung's signature "Infinity Display" which gives users a higher screen-to-body ratio without increasing the overall size of the device. The Samsung Galaxy J6 was later re-branded as the Samsung Galaxy On6 when it went on sale online in India, but the specifications and software remained the same. Now, it seems that Samsung has been working on a Samsung Galaxy J6+ model with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 system-on-chip which could launch in India as the Samsung Galaxy On6+.
