Sony’s Open Devices Program releases an Android 11 build guide and binaries for select Xperia phones
Sony has published an Android 11 build guide and software binaries for several Xperia phones via their Open Devices initiative. Read on!
Unlike some major OEMs, Sony Mobile has yet to publish an elaborate roadmap for Android 11 update distribution. The company doesn't even offer a public beta program to evaluate the newest iteration of Android on Xperia smartphones, but that's not the whole story. With every major Android revision, Sony releases software binaries and instructions on compiling the latest version of AOSP for devices that are part of its Open Devices program. Since the codebase of Android 11 has officially been up on AOSP for a while, the Japanese OEM has now released Android 11 compatible binaries along with a step-by-step guide to build AOSP 11.0 for a bunch of Xperia devices.
Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus receive official Android 10 update
Sony Xperia 10 and 10 Plus have finally started receiving the stable Android 10 update. The OTA also brings in March 2020 security patches.
During Mobile World Congress in 2019, Sony unveiled the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus, two mid-range smartphones with tall 21:9 displays. The phones launched with Android 9 Pie on board, but Sony promised an update to Android 10 "early 2020 onwards". Sony quickly added both devices to the company's Open Devices Program, and the device duo got official TWRP and LineageOS 17.1 support earlier this year. Now, it appears that Sony is officially rolling out the Android 10 update for the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus.
TWRP adds support for the Sony Xperia 10/10 Plus
The Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) custom recovery is now available for the Sony Xperia 10 and the Sony Xperia 10 Plus.
The Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) is the most popular custom recovery out there, and for good reason. It offers the best blend of functionality, and it remains easy-to-use. It also has a fairly pleasing user interface. Official TWRP support has recently been added for the Xiaomi Mi A3, Redmi Note 8 Pro, ASUS ROG Phone II, Realme X2, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite, Nokia 7.1, Snapdragon Motorola Moto E4, and the Xiaomi Redmi 8. Now, official support has been added for the Sony Xperia 10 and Sony Xperia 10 Plus.

Sony Xperia 10 [Mini] Review: A Glimpse at the 21:9 Future
The Xperia 10 is Sony's latest mid-range smartphone with a crazy tall 21:9 display. We outline the pros and cons of both the Xperia 10 & Xperia 10 Plus.
It feels as if new Android devices are falling into a rut, especially at the mid to low-end of the market. Manufacturers seem content with launching near carbon copies of one another with punch-hole cutouts or ridiculous and needless notches. Then tying them to low-spec processors and camera hardware that is ill-used just to have another sensor on the back. Sony wants to buck that trend, and while the new Xperia 10 lineup departs from what most other manufacturers are doing today, they fall into the same traps that have hurt them and the Xperia brand in the past. At the same time, Sony is hoping to give us a glimpse into what could be yet another new form factor revision.

The Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus have been available for a little while now and our own Daniel Marchena from XDA TV has had some time to play with them.
Last month, the Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus were announced along with the slew of other devices at MWC. The phones have been available for a little while now and our own Daniel Marchena from XDA TV has had some time gather his thoughts. These phones don't look like the typical smartphone of today since they have super tall 21:9 displays. How does that affect daily usage? Is it a beneficial feature? Check out Daniel's hands-on video below.
Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus added to Sony's Open Devices Program
Sony has recently added their latest devices, the Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus mid-rangers, to the Sony Open Devices Program.
In the early days of Android, Sony was one of the very few OEMs that worked towards fostering good relations with the developer community by releasing device trees, vendor blobs, and kernel sources for some of its most popular devices. At BABBQ 2015, we even had the opportunity to interview XDA Senior Recognized Developer jerpelea a.k.a. Mr. Alin Jerpelea, the Open Source Community Manager at Sony, where we talked about Sony's goals and vision for the Open Devices Program. Over the years, Sony's smartphones have faded away from popularity, but the OEM has still stuck around with the same intents. Now, Sony has added in its latest Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus mid-rangers to the Sony Open Devices Program.
Sony Xperia 10's launcher app gets ported to any Xperia phone running Android Pie
An XDA member has ported the launcher application from the Sony Xperia 10 to any other Xperia device that is running Android Pie.
It can be difficult to port apps from a device from one OEM to a device from a completely different one. This is mainly due to the fact that so many OEM ROM features are reliant on the framework that the company has built into its software. However, when an OEM doesn't create this massive framework that is tied to their OEM ROM, porting such applications can be much easier. That has helped a member of the community to port the launcher application from the Sony Xperia 10 to any other Xperia device that is running Android Pie.

Download the live wallpapers from the Sony Xperia 10 and 10 Plus
The Sony Xperia 10 and the Sony Xperia 10 Plus are now a thing, and you can download the live wallpapers included in both devices now.
The Sony Xperia 10 and the Sony Xperia 10 Plus have just recently been announced, and they're among the bigger surprises from MWC 2019. Both devices are very much unlike anything we've seen before from Sony, or any other company for that matter. 21:9 ultra-tall displays are present here as Sony managed to remove the bottom bezel nearly entirely, leaving a top bezel which houses the camera, the earpiece, and other sensors. For all other intents and purposes, though, we're talking about midrange devices powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 and 636 respectively.
Sony Xperia 10/Plus Hands-on: the tallest phones at MWC
The Sony Xperia 10 and the Sony Xperia 10 Plus are here, and both are pretty good devices for what they are. It's a shame about the price, though.
Sony's devices generally arrive without much fanfare. They're typically just your average phone that works decently, without any crazy changes or features. The latest mid-range smartphones from Sony tell a different story, however, as there is one major change. These smartphones have a 21:9 aspect ratio, and if that seems tall, that's because it is.
Sony unveils the Xperia 1 with a 4K OLED 21:9 display and the mid-range Xperia 10 and 10 Plus
Sony has announced the flagship Sony Xperia 1 smartphone with a 4K OLED 21:9 display and the mid-range Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus with 21:9 displays.
In 2018, smartphone manufacturers competed to see who could release the smartphone with the thinnest bezels—but not Sony. We crowned the Sony Xperia XZ3 the anti-2018 smartphone because it bucked the big design trends of 2018. With the new Sony Xperia 1, Xperia 10, and Xperia 10 Plus, the Japanese smartphone maker has once again forged their own path while others compete to build the best 5G-enabled or foldable smartphone. All three of these smartphones have incredibly wide 21:9 displays and large top but thin bottom bezels, but the Xperia 1, in particular, caught our attention since it's the first smartphone with a 4K OLED display.
